Calendar Events / Announcements '05 II / Dick Cavett Show on DVD
« on: August 23, 2005, 05:24:11 PM »
Dear Fans,

A friend of mine informed me last week that selected episodes of the Dick Cavett Show are being given a
release on DVD.  He just bought the first set with the theme "Rock Stars" (or something like that) and described performances by Jefferson Airplane, Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin and other luminaries of the time.

I speculated to him whether the Jonathan Frid episode would be included in a future release and he just sent me this note in today's email:

Dick Cavett reads questions from the audience on little note cards.  Someone
asks "When you had Jonathan Frid on your show last week, did he really bite you
and leave teeth marks on your hand?"

I thought this was a hoot!  I remember when JF was on Merv Griffin, some rather dippy-looking dame appeared to be afraid he was going to bite her!  Amusing as it seems now, I'm sure it was very tiresome for JF as a serious actor to have to put up with these antics during "those years of insanity."

I heard a rumor a year or two ago that a similar release of the Mike Douglas Show was being prepared, but heard nothing further regarding this.

Best wishes,

Gothick

Luciaphil's Idle Thoughts '05 / Re: Nosy Parkers -- Episodes 97 & 98
« on: August 18, 2005, 10:59:02 PM »
Luciaphil darling, when you wrote a propos of Mrs J:

she probably only owns three dresses, some girdles, orthopedic shoes, that plaid bathrobe, a wig stand, and a pair of binoculars, so I guess that's about right. Not in the luggage, but very much present is her torch for Bill Malloy.

I had a sudden vision of you as the 21st century's true answer to Dashiell Hammett.  btw, I about bust a gut guffawing over Mrs J's pair of binoculars.  I can just see her using them, too.

I loved episode 98 and your precis makes me want to see it again. DS doesn't get much better than Mrs J's first day at Collinwood!

I adore your writing.  Please do continue.

your fan,

Gothick

There was rain the night Chris Jennings arrived in Collinsport in 1968.  I remember the raindrops on Joe's hospital window, and the fact that Chris was a bit damp when he gave Dr. Hoffman the fright of her life (heh, heh).

Excellent work, as always, my dear.  I don't think I was bothered as much by the irrationality of Vicki's reactions to "the pen" as you were; when people panic, they do stupid things--stupid things that often cause much more serious damage than the initial cause for panic.

Grayson told a story about Ava Gardner being amazed at the realism of her telephone call acting in NOTI.  Ava wanted to know "how do you do that?" "Oh, it's simple," Grayson replied.  "I just imagine someone on the other side of the line saying words and then speak my lines in response accordingly." "Oh, my God!" Gardner is supposed to have shrieked, "that's TECHNIQUE!"  And then, according to the irrepressible redhead, the famous star ran down to the beach and threw herself into the ocean.

Bear in mind that Grayson was known for her faculty of exaggeration in storytelling...

Angelique Dupres??  Oh Dear.

Don't tell me that in this version, Angelique turns out to be Josette's bastard sister, sired by Andre on a sugar plantation slave with magical powers of her own...

That final scene does sound hilarious.  But still not as hilarious as the cover for the new DS 1991 DVD.

Perhaps it should be retitled Goodbite, Moon?? *shrieeek*!

That's funny about the amazombie listing for the 1991 discs.  I was wondering last night at one point whether some people would buy this set thinking that it was the real thing (i. e. the Sixties show), not the remake, especially with that cover... I swear that crazy image looks more like a cartoon version of Jonathan Frid than Ben Cross...

That's very cool.  He's been highly touted here as a candidate for the role, but I was not aware that he was a fan.  I have the impression that Tim Burton is a huge fan and wonder whether Depp sometimes watches the discs when he's hanging out at Tim B's house.

Maybe Depp caught DS in the late 70s or early 80s syndications?  I know they ran it in NYC on one of the major channels.

Darren, has Depp gone on record with an interest in the role of Barnabas Collins and Dark Shadows?

I live in a cave, so this could have very easily slipped past me if it happened.

Thanks, Steve

That cover is incredibly schlocky, but then, so were LARGE swathes of the show itself... That doesn't even look like Ben Cross--it looks more like Ferdy Mayne in Fearless Vampire Killers.

The bottom line seems to be that the suits at Sony/MGM/whatever decided to commit minimal amounts of time, money and resources to prepping the 1991 series DVD release.  I'm fascinated by the bits of information on the history of the release Darren has revealed.

Best wishes,

I'll definitely chime in to agree that Dan Curtis has no taste to speak of.  I still twitch every time I see those awful, ridiculous shots of poor Ben Cross doing his rabid-pooch thing, surrounded by dry ice, in the promos for the 91 series that litter my higher-number DS tapes.

I write that even though my beloved Grayson Hall went on record with the immortal remark that "Dan has a real genius when it comes to spook."  Gotta love that line...

So, the suits at MGM or Sony or whatever the hell it is really don't give two red cents about the quality of product on the DS 91 package.  That's what I take away from their evident decision not to go with the longer cuts of the earlier episodes, plus the perceived non-interest in the extras package from that MPI "DS Resurrected" tape (which I haven't seen).

They must have the same low opinion of the 1991 series that I do!

surprised, Gothick

Thanks again, Darren, for explaining to us about all the work that needs to take place before something like a re-edited film (in the case the VHS release print of those Dark Shadows episodes) can be released on DVD.

At first, the announcement that the firm is releasing the original episodes minus the extra footage that would be expected from a DVD release seemed either stupid or just plain mean--or both!  But now it seems as if they're rushing the episodes out in an effort to make a quick buck and can't afford the many months of time that would be required for the process you describe here.

I hadn't heard about the Sony purchase of MGM.  Isn't everything in LA going to wind up being owned by Disney/Warners??

Fans, a friend of mine who, unlike myself, has cable, reported that he saw most of Joan Bennett's 1972 TV movie, "Gidget gets married," on a broadcast on WE (Women's Entertainment) last Monday (in the afternoon, I think).

It sounded as if Joan did not have much to do, but I am sure she looked elegant as always.  The rest of the cast included Don Ameche and Paul Lynde.

It's possible that the network will repeat the film--those of you who have it might want to check your schedules.

I just need to say that I *love* the two Liz-and-Roger shots from the August 9, 1966 episode.  It doesn't get much more classic than the smirk on Roger's face in the first one, or the damn-the-torpedoes look on Liz's in the third one.

Lovely shot of Vampilique's unveiling at the end, too.  I'm tempted to write "Fangs for the memories." Oy.

Thanks for that link, Darren!  I hadn't heard aboiut that book.  It does indeed sound exactly like what I was looking for!

Plus, our own Denise Nickerson wrote a preface for it!  I see that David Hedison also wrote something that is included.  I just saw a horrible bootleg of Curtis Harrington's The Cat Creature (1973), which I got primarily for Gale Sondergaard's extremely "Shadowsesque" performance.  Hedison showed excellent craftsmanship in the climactic scene of the film, which was designed as a tribute to Val Lewton's Cat People and could easily have been even more absurd than it already was, minus Hedison's strong work. (He'd obviously learned a few tricks emoting opposite the bizarre costumes of the Irwin Allen series, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.)
