Title: David Selby to Receive Honorary Doctorate
Post by: MsCriseyde on March 06, 2004, 05:31:56 AM
The Official David Selby Web Site (http://www.davidselby.com) reports that David Selby will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary doctorate during spring graduation ceremonies at West Virginia University.

David already holds BS and MA degrees from WVU and a doctorate from Southern Illinois University. (These are all earned degrees, not honorary degrees.)

The official site includes a link to the commencement section of the WVU web site with specific details about the time and location of the event as well as information about ordering a videotape of the event.

The News (http://www.davidselby.com/news.htm) page of the Official David Selby Web Site includes a link to another press release from WVU, issued today, about their upcoming commencement exercises. This one profiles the three people who will be receiving honorary doctorates, including David, and explains why they were selected for this distinction.

Striking good looks were not a criterion. Go figure.  ;D

According to the WVU web site and the News page of the official Selby site (http://www.davidselby.com), David will be available to the media during an informal press conference on Friday, so there could wind up being some media coverage regarding David that goes beyond simply reiterating that he delivered the commencement address.  :)

In the Sunday Gazette Mail there's an article about David Selby's commencement address today.  It gives a few quotes and sort of gives an idea of the flavor of his address.  There's also a nice little picture.  (Aw.....what a sweetie)

It would be great to be able to read his speech wouldn't it??  [thumb]   (A video would be even better)  [grinb]

Here's the link:

Thanks, Connie!

In addition, www.davidselby.com provides the link to another weekend article (in Morgantown's Dominion Post) that also has a nice photo and some fascinating (well, to me ;)) info about upcoming projects.  :D

Oooo!  THIS is an interesting article....a book that's being edited and upcoming projects.  Also, THIS:

Quote from article:
Quote
"...I had to take bonehead English...It was an English proficiency class. You had to pass this bloody exam before you could graduate. It took me three times."

Um.......Uh oh!!  ROFL
This gives me pause.  ???
Among some credit requirements I'm getting out of the way this summer is an English Comp II course.  I figured, "yeah, no problem."  Maybe I better re-think this!  LOL  It's been a long time since I took a college level English course.  If it took him 3 times to pass "bonehead English", then I think I'm in trouble 'cause he was born a helluva lot smarter than I was!!
(Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated)

BTW, commencement video info is here:

http://www.wvu.edu/commencement/video.html

WHOA!  DUDE!!*
I'm there!  This is great.  I want this video -- want to know EVERYTHING he had to say.

Signed.
Can't afford it but that's too bad 'cause I'm getting it anyway.

*I really have to stop talking like my twelve-year-old

And heh, I like it!

There's a link to The Dominion Post's "Bring It On..." on www.davidselby.com (http://www.davidselby.com).  It seems easiest to use the Articles link on the Welcome page because it takes you right to the commencement writeups.

Well, looks like there's not much I need to add to my site to supplement the content on the official web site. If you've not checked out DavidSelby.com (http://www.davidselby.com) over the past 24-48 hours, the site includes:

The fun never ends at DavidSelby.com (http://www.davidselby.com). The latest addition to the Articles page of the site is an audio link to a radio program from this past Friday. Apparently, the interview with David was recorded during Friday's informal press conference at WVU.

Get this one while it's hot, folks. WV Public Broadcasting doesn't leave these radio shows online very long at all. (They interviewed David last fall when he was doing Love Letters in Martinsburg.)

A word of warning for anyone attempting to listen to this Windows Media Player file via a dialup connection: expect lots of stalling and buffering from your player.  ::)

At davidselby.com they've posted a couple of pictures of David receiving the degree.  They're in the Photo section, in Other Photos.

Thanks to Criseyde for the heads up re: the link to the radio broadcast of that interview.  Never would have noticed that link in a million years.  (Is it me, or do they seem to not put their links in order - last to first, or first to last).
Anyway, it IS nearly impossible to listen to with all the delays, buffering and whatever.  You sit and wait for what seems like forever, hear a few words, then wait forever again.  It's a 20+ minute news broadcast, and he's near the end.  After a few attempts at getting the thing to play at all, I managed to capture the thing, clicking "pause" in my software during all the buffering.  For anyone who gave up in frustration trying to hear this thing, I would be happy to send you a little MP3 of it.  There isn't much (the interviewer seems to talk more than he does), but.....there ya go.  IM me or something, if ya want it.
I also have the Love Letters phone interview and Final Assault interview, if there's anyone who didn't get the chance to hear them.

I can't imagine that capturing a snippet from a news broadcast is any sort of violation of copyright, but what do I know?  It's not like it would be used for anything -- just shared privately.
I can see it all now!  Item up for bid on EBAY....

OMG - THANK you!!  I'm always MISSING everything.
What great pictures!  Much better than the ones those newspaper sites have up.  (Some have been soooo crummy and grainy they must compress them a million times or something).
THESE are so nice.  How sweet.  And the hair!  YES.....YES!!!
Keep going!  Longer!   ROFL
See the curls in the back?  Ah......so precious.

Selby-Stricken

So long as the copy is used privately, it wouldn't be. But if someone put it up on their own Web site or they tried to sell it, that would be a violation of the copyright. Even distributing it via a private mailing list would be a violation.

So I assume that putting a .wav clip of music or dialogue from any broadcast, be it the news or a TV show, on a website, is illegal?  Would it stand to reason that putting a screen capture on a website is likewise illegal?

It is - and that's why a lot of producers and networks crack down on Web sites that do it. We're just very lucky that DCP is willing to look the other way. And if you'll notice, I take captures from the Sci-Fi broadcasts so that I don't infringe on MPI's copyright.  ;)

The Official David Selby Web Site (http://www.davidselby.com) has even more stuff today. There's a new article link and a link to photo pages on the WVU Commencement web site. They've posted so many photos from this event that flipping through them in slideshow format is practically like watching the whole ceremony. I think they've pretty much covered every Selby hand and facial gesture from his speech, and they've got some shots of him from the procession as well.

Forget that crap about a man in uniform. Give me a man in academic regalia.

Some advice on viewing these photos: WVU Photographic Services likes to slap a lot of images on a single page, which can be a real problem if you're using a dialup connection. The easiest way around this is to click on a thumbnail image to pull up the ordering page for it and then to use the back and next arrows on the individual photo pages to view them one at a time.

The problem really seems to have more to do with Internet Destroyer, err Explorer. If you use another browser, such as Mozilla Firefox, the entire page of photos will eventually load. IE will load about 1/8 of them and just stop, so you have to use the method described above.  ::)
