I don't know if it's done anymore, but back in the days before 24/7 saturation of tv programming, pilots for series that were not picked up would usually get at least a token airing.

i found a cd at of all places a japanese record store called "the original music from dark shadows deluxe edition". ... i have no idea where else this cd is available.
George Allen did use a downeast accent and to me, he seemed a lot more like a New Englander than TD's. Bear in mind, that I've never actually been to New England.
Allen brought a crustiness to the role that seemed natural. Yes, something was a bit off, but he was less theatrical and more real.
I think that one ought to be re-named "smooching"
