Title: Tan shoes in December
Post by: TERRY308 on September 11, 2002, 06:42:09 PM
Now don't get me wrong, but, did you notice Vicki/Betsy shoes today?  There she is, going crazy because that dumb watch, that she gave Jeff/Peter, on their "honeymoon", is starting and stopping whenever "he" comes in the room.  Anyway, there she goes to Widows Hill, she's going to jump off, here come Mrs. Stoddard and Professor Stokes, and they're begging her not to end it all, and we see her, full length.

I started laughing.  The lime green coat, okay, that was the style for about a day, but those tan shoes!!!!  I had heard someone mention that it was December, so, I know that you never wear tan shoes.  Mrs. Stoddard had on black shoes, as did Carolyn.  But Vicki/Betsy she did not.

I could send John Waters and he would shoot her, or that costume person.  I just can't believe that Vicki/Betsy would pick out tan shoes in December, in 1968.

No, it had to be costume person.

Yes, we wear tan pumps in Maine and in December.
However, she should be wearing her bean boots(LLBean) for the hike through the snow to Widows Hill.  If she happen to hit an icy patch she would not have to jump off she would just slide over the edge.

I actually didn't think she had any shoes on at all on Monday when she passed out in the hall at Collinwood.  Then I saw the tan/beige ones.

[idea2]I think the ladies should all wear tool belts ...(coordinated to match their

dresses of course)... to hold all the necessary paraphernalia one needs to live in
Collinswood area... things like.. oh...let's see.... [hdscrt]wooden stakes, hammers,[smash]

crosses, doggy treats for the wolfman, guns with silver bullets, a flashlight for

travelling through the woods, SprayNWash towelettes for quick blood removal,

just the bare necessities!

Oh, I agree, Onyx_treasure!  In fact, I think all of Collinwood could have used a little help from LLBean!

Just think....lovely fleecy throws in black and red plaids...oval rag rugs on the floors...bittersweet wreath on the door...everyone in flannel lined jeans and hand knitted sweaters.

Picture Roger and Barnabas returning from a day's hunting....camouflage jackets, boots and Elmer Fudd hats....demanding brandy and help with the moose carcass out on the front steps!

No, eh?.....well, it was just a thought.

Makes me hot just thinking about it! Even when it gets down to the 20's in Las Vegas during the winter, I don't wear flannel lined jeans. Our cold spell is so short here, even sweaters are a waste of money.

Hi Raineypark,

I don't know about Barnabas but I can picture Roger at one of those fancy hunting lodges.  The ones that have professional hunting guides and serve a gourmet meal at the end of the day and someone else takes care of the taxadermy.  Can't you just picture a huge moose head over the mantel in the drawing room?
By the way, real Mainers can't afford to shop at LLBean.

well, lets see, she recently was kidnapped by a man made monster, thrown on a gurney, and nearly electrocuted, was attacked by a vampire, and just watched her newlywed husband disappear into thin air, think we can forgive her for not being "fashionable". i am sure liz will scold her and tell her "next time you prepare to jump, put on a nicer pair of shoes"!!! There goes that lime green coat again!  Didn't Cassandra wear that all the time?

Also the nightgown & matching robe that Vicky had on in her room when Amy came running in is the exact same one that Carolyn wore not too long ago.

I always wonder about the shoes these women wear on DS that they're able to go trekking through the woods and never have so much as a speck of dirt on them.

Ha!  I thought so! I have to say though that when she took off the robe thing, Durkin looked pretty good in it--she has more of a figure than Barrett and it was the first thing I've seen on her (Durkin) on the show that made her appear to be halfway attractive.

Possibly this "new" rule exist, (the one with tan shoes being okay to wear after Labor Day), but you've got to remember one thing.....this happen in 1968.  Beside, I wouldn't  and don't go with the "new rule".

There is also a black wool coat that Noah Gifford wore in 1795, you will see it on Joe Haskell soon. It's the same one Noah was wearing when he was with Ben at The Eagle.

By the way, real Mainers can't afford to shop at LLBean.

And with Burberry and Nine West there who the hell wants to even look at a duck shoe anyway?  For real native casual shoes I will stick with clam diggers and weejuns.

A quick shoe primer:

Tan shoes off season:  Pumps, never, a seude slouch boot, okay.  Non-boot wise, try to go with richer browns or an ox blood.

White shoes still in?  They are a pita, but sometimes unavoidable...and spectator pumps are a must when trying to find a shoe to wear with dressy red, red is a bitch to match.  Have the red/white spectator pump on hand for this.  They are also good in navy/white.

Two tone shoes are good in general, because David Selby wears them, and that is reason enough (see, I am on topic here).

Heels....you can never have enough variance in heel inch.  Great fitting jeans are hard to find, hemming is bitch....so much easier just to have shoes to accomodate the length of the jeans.  For the vertically challenged, such as myself (I am way too short for my weight), a slim leg jean that is too long, but whose length is corrected by a stack heeled Nine West oxford is the holy grail.  I advise these Nine Wests in both black and chocolate brown with all the heel variation there is out there.  To keep to the LL Bean topic here, let me say that this is the perfect place to insert the following:  LL Bean sizing sucks.  LL Bean cut sucks.

Flats: Created for the sole purpose of wearing with leggings, which, fahion mavens be damned, will never be out of style if you have small thighs and butt.  Industry wants to dictate to the flat tummied, well I can't change that, but I can hold on to my leggings.

Black patent leather Mary Janes?  Not just for the parochial school girl anymore, wear them til your 90.

Flip flops?  For running errands, go for it, but for the love of god leave off the plastic doo-dahs.  Something with a sole that doesn't scream shower room at the Y is a given.

Burberry check slides?  Will everyone who has lemminged this pattern and made it trendy please move on to the next thing so that I can go back to wearing the ones I have had for years without looking like a charter member of the Oprah Book Club?  Thank You.

Boots....here you are financially screwed, because with real winters you have too many bases to cover.  Style and function tend to not over lap well....so you have to have both, and of course you need black, brown, neutral.  White...nonononono.  Not even good on majorettes. If you are not planning on dancing topless in a cage, do not buy white boots.  A cream or rich ivory is good, though.

You can trust me on knowing my boot thing, I was caught once not having the right boot....dark, but not frivolous, and definately not utilitarian a couple of years ago when I had a family funeral with snow on the ground.  Since if I had worn the wrong boot, I would hope to hell they would be burying me, I wore pumps.  I then was asked to be a pall bearer (ironic since this was the  blood relative I would l have least  wanted to put in a grave).

I am now boot ready.  Bring anything on.

I do not own a pair of Bean boots, and have not since 1978.  You need that good solid boot to shovel out the car or schlepp to the corner store, but give me a Bass shitkicker any day.

The final word on shoes:  Ladies, you must own a pair of FMPs.

Thanks for the shoe primer. You sure know your stuff. I knew I was ignorant but just not the depths that I am about such things.

I've been a pall bearer twice and was asked to wear flats, which I did. And, yes, I think one pair of them were tan in the off season.

I would have worn tan off season before I would have worn functional boots to a church or cemetary.

The bag would have matched, though.

Sheenasma,

Are you, by any chance, related to Imelda Marcos?

I personally resort to my school marm lace up shoes for all dressy occassions here in Hooterville, and that's because I am a school marm.

FMPs for the theatre and all dressy occasions in dazzling urban locations, though mine are not pumps per se. I go for the strappy high-heeled hooker look.

Beyond that, I believe that sueded pigskin work boots complement any and all outfits. When accompanied by a NASCAR cap, they also scare the hell out of any students who come to my office hours. ;)

White before Memorial Day, or after Labor Day is verboten.  No white shoes, white bag, white dress, skirt or pants.  White blouse or sweater with dark skirt or pants is okay, though.  This came from on high, via my Irish grandmother.

Ladies wore gloves and a hat to church, gents always removed thier hats before entering any building.  A lady never bared her arms in church.  A lady always wore stockings.

One always has proper funeral attire cleaned and pressed in the closet, ready for service should the occassion arise.

One never wore diamonds, aside from their wedding jewelry, before the cocktail hour.  One never partook before the cocktail hour.  Here the logic gets a little fuzzy, becauase apparently if you got blind drunk on a daily basis, but waited til the appropriate time, you didn't have a problem there.

After 30 a lady never wears pants or has hair longer than shoulder length.  This is going to prove problematic someday...I get to the afterlife, if she is hanging with her friends, she is going to pretend she doesn't know me.

This shoe thread (or should I say string tee hee) is fascinating.  I'm no Imelda myself but that may be due only to financial constraints [greed] since I can identify with the love of shoes.  Really enjoyed your insights on the subject Shennasma.  As to DS and shoes most of the time I rarely notice what they're wearing.  Except for one scene in 1795 when Barnabas was creeping down the hall toward the study and they did a close-up of his boots.  I remember thinking they seemed realistic.  It seems to me that if the costumers had been up on all the styles to any great extent at some point they would have had to feature Carolyn in some short Go Go boots and one of those little poufy hats with a bill (I just saw a hat like that at the mall the other day BTW! ~ what a flashback!)  Even I had both of those items.

Though I have enjoyed lots of styles over the years I tend to remember certain types with genuine fondness (mostly due to comfort and how well they last) and try to find reasonable facsimiles as they wear out.  I've loved plain white Reeboks since I first discovered them back in the early 80's at the dawn of the leather sport shoe craze.  I always have at least two pair in my closet.  I also remember this great pair of Aigner oxfords I had back in the late ¢â‚¬Ëœ70's.  Not only were they comfortable but also they made my feet look more like a 6.5 than a 7.5, which for some reason I thought, was really cool at the time (I wear 8's now and couldn't care less how big my feet look as long as they don't hurt).  For comfortable, well-made and long lasting casual shoes I rely on Clark.  I have on a pair of huarache sandals right now that I have been living in most of the summer - like walking on clouds!  And speaking of long-lasting and comfortable I've got my original Birkenstock's that are at least 15 years old and going strong.  Oh, I know, they aren't the best looking of the lot but they feel sooooooo good.  I'm pretty sure they even helped me get rid of a heal spur once too.  Love the look of heels but after having broken both ankles [bawl] - one of them twice and the other at the same time as the second break (please, call me Grace) - I just don't take the chance with them very often.

Hee hee, you have no idea how much I've enjoyed everything you've had to say.  Then again, you probably do. ;)

Last Wednesday, after reading through the posts on the board, including the one about Icky Vicki's tan shoes that started all this, I was feeling bummed and couldn't bear to be near a TV so of course I went shoe shopping.  I saw some shortish slouch boots (I SO agree with your assessment-- they're hot) but when I pointed them out the salesperson asked, "The tan ones?" and I had to explain that hello, they're light brown, NOT tan, thank you.  He must've thought I was the biggest nut.  (Defensive much?)

I hate shoes.  I hate SHOPPING for shoes, I hate having to PAY for shoes, but mostly I hate WEARING shoes.  My mother called me "The Barefoot Contessa" my whole life.

Mom, on the other hand, couldn't pass a shoe store without dragging me inside.  If finances hadn't been so tight back then, she'd have owned a world class collection of shoes.

My daughter seems to have inherited THAT particular family trait straight from her Grandmother! [rleyeb]

I am with you, Raineypark.  I hate buying or wearing shoes.  I spend all winter in my slippers or in my Bean boots.  I don't know what it is but I am so careful to choose the right pair and I still end up with shoes that don't feel right.

I walk 2 miles a day, walking my daughter to and from school, so comfortable shoes are a must. I do have a car, but I hate driving! I'd rather walk in the triple digits weather here for half a year, than drive.

Yesterday I wore white capri pants!  The shame of it after labor day.  I failed fashion 101.

Nah, Birdie, you're a trailblazer.  Designers are now doing head to toe white in their shows, and yes, that means shoes, and purses too.  This trend is being referred to as "the new black"; huh???!!!

Oh Sheenasma, there's a soup commercial running that disses Mary Janes!  So rude!!
