Ask Matt: ..., 'Dark Shadows' and ...

When I saw the headline for this column I thought for sure someone was going to be asking about the CW's script deal. And a particular someone at that who often writes to Matt about DS. But I was wrong...

Oh come on... Matt Roush should know better than to refer to "seasons" of DS!!! (And this is a new one to me: 26 seasons?!? I think I may have heard of 5 seasons--supposedly each year being a season--but how do they calculate 26?)

Well, MB's post the other day had 12 seasons - apparently calling each storyline a season!

But, as crazy as that seems, I can't imagine how that could be expanded to 26 and Roush goes along with it!!

The "seasons" refer to how DS is listed on Amazon. It lists 26 seasons of "Dark Shadows", each season representing 1 DVD collection of the show--there were 26 of these released beginning with Barnabas' arrival through the end of the show.

Amazon has a similar set up for DS: The Beginning, with one season representing each DVD collection of the show.

It's odd but not unique to DS. Reality shows tend to refer to each new competition as a season. Survivor claims 38 seasons. It has only been airing since 2000.

"Season" for the reality shows makes more sense, because they go on hiatus, then start up with a whole new cast (set of contestants). Although, perhaps the word "series" would be even better (that's what the British use). But with DS--as with all American soaps--season doesn't make sense because it's one continuous story, told without stopping. (And although there are separate story arcs, they overlap and interconnect.)
