What We Do in the Shadows (streaming on Hulu): One of my very favorite shows of the year, an inspired horror comedy based on a 2014 cult film, is now streaming its entire first season. The mock-documentary follows three sad-sack Eurotrash vampires who dither and bicker through eternity in the not-so-posh borough of Staten Island, N.Y. In my initial review, I likened Nandor "the Relentless" (Kayvan Novak), surly Laszlo (Matt Berry) and jaded Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) to "the undead equivalent of the Three Stooges." Shadows is a succulent mashup of the macabre and mundane. If you missed it during the FX run — thankfully, it has been renewed for a second season — don't miss it now.

What We Do in the Shadows (10/9c, FX): Time to get familiar again with the funniest TV vampires since Grandpa Munster, in FX's adaptation of the cult movie, now in its second season of supernatural hilarity. The hapless Staten Island vamps are under siege by assassins from the Vampire Council, but only Guillermo (Harvey Guillén), the underappreciated "familiar" – i.e., servant/would-be vampire in training — is aware of the threat, keeping his dim-witted master Nandor (Kayvan Novak) and married ghouls Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) and Laszlo (Matt Berry) in the dark. Adding to poor Guillermo's woes: an arrogant new familiar (Haley Joel Osment) who does none of the work but seeks all of the credit. In the second episode (10:30/9:30c), Nadja conducts a séance to rid their rotting mansion of ghosts, but only makes matters worse by conjuring new and familiar spirits, all needing to tend to unfinished business before they can move on. Not since Dark Shadows have I enjoyed the company of the undead more.

And again a reference to DS -  but I suppose that's natural given 1) the subject of this show, and 2) Matt Roush is a huge DS fan.

What We Do in the Shadows (10/9c, FX): Computers are not a vampire's friend — especially when gullible Nandor (Kayvan Novak) goes online for the first time in ages and calls up a chain e-mail that makes him believe he and his fellow vamps have been cursed. He may be on to something, though, because when Guillermo (Harvey Guillen) goes undercover with the local vampire-hunters group (including guest star Craig Robinson) for what he thinks is another training session, he discovers to his dismay that they're planning to go out on their first hunt. It would be scary if it weren't so ridiculously funny.

What We Do in the Shadows (10/9c, FX): The last ghoul you'd expect to go on a power trip is Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), the nerdy "energy vampire" who sucks the energy out of any room he enters. But when Colin is given a promotion at work, he begins to feed on the power of bossing others around, which creates an uproariously funny reversal in the hierarchy back home with his more traditional vampire roomies. At first Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) is skeptical: "He's not a wild card. He's the card you get at the top of the deck that has instructions on it, so you throw it away." But there's no dismissing Colin's affect on the others, who eventually become so drained they lose their bite to fight back. Is it even possible for the undead to be bored to death?

What We Do in the Shadows (10/9c, FX): One of the most enjoyable developments in the second season of this hilarious supernatural comedy has been watching "familiar" Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) developing an attitude after years of underappreciated subservience. He's on a break as another terrific episode begins, but even so, it's going to be up to "Gizmo" — as Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) dismissively calls him — to rescue his unworthy vampire masters when Laszlo (Matt Berry) and Nandor (Kayvan Novak) are suddenly abducted by witches for purposes best not described in this space. As Guillermo's search for the trapped vamps takes them out of Staten Island, Nadja observes that they must be close: "The smell of beef and sulfur is overwhelming." Colin Robinson's (Mark Proksch) reply: "That's just Brooklyn."

The mansion is in more disarray than usual, because the vamps' disgruntled human "familiar" — and secret slayer — Guillermo (Harven Guillén) has split, leaving no one to refresh their Gothic wardrobes or clean up their messes. As Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) gripes: "Who is leaving all these bodies everywhere?" When they get an invitation to an exclusive performance by the Nouveau Theatre des Vampires, even dull energy-draining Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) believes their fortunes are improving. We've been around these immortals long enough to know better.

I adore 'What We Do in the Shadows' (the tv show and the movie). It never fails to crack me up.
I'd absolutely love it if they included a DS reference at some point. Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement are New Zealanders, so they might not have been familiar with the show when they were growing up, but I think it'd be a miss if they don't at least make some throwaway reference to the Collins family or something. lol.
The same goes for 'The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina'. We need an Angelique reference in the mix. Or better yet, bring in Lara Parker for a cameo.

Yes, the show is often too funny for words. And sometimes I can't believe the things they get away with, like the ,uh, "ectoplasm" joke in the second season premiere!  [snow_wow] [snow_laugh]

Haha. Yeah, they definitely go to some "unexpected places" on that show.
I also will forever think of the Superbowl (which I've never been interested in at all) as the Superb Owl.

Love the interview with Seth Meyers. That was great! Harvey Guillén seems like such a sweetheart. I love the trajectory his character has taken in the series.
