The Introduction of Julia (episodes 265-365)

For some reason, I thought Julia was there before Barnabas (good 'ol FDSMS).

Can someone recap Julia's arrival?

Thanks,

Patti

Julia came on the scene after Maggie had been kidnapped by Barnabas and was rescued by the ghost of Sarah, who gave her a riddle as to how she could escape from the basement cell Barnabas had put her in. Originally, Dr. Hoffman was supposed to be a man, but it was changed when Grayson Hall was hired to play the doctor. Dr. Woodard recommended her to Sam since Julia ran Windcliff, where Maggie was sent. The ruse was that Maggie was dead so that the kidnapper wouldn't try to kill her before she could I.D. him.

I believe Dr. Hoffman became female first, and then Grayson Hall was asked if she was interested in the part...but I am having fun imagining Dan Curtis deciding to add some class to Dark Shadows by hiring Oscar nominee Grayson Hall to play Dr. Julian Hoffman, and then being very surprised, on Mr. Hall's first day, to discover that Grayson was a woman.

I think orginally when Barnabas was to appear on the show for only twelve weeks. Julia Hoffman was
suppose to kill Barnabas. She was suppose to be simliar to Van Helsing. Does anybody know if this was
true or not?

Probably Julius Hoffman and then Woodard were supposed to kill Barnabas.

Apparently, in the original thought for the story line, Dr. Julian Hoffman (or was it Julius? - well, it was initially suppose to be a guy), was also going to die when he offed Barnabas.  Bodies, bodies everywhere.

And not a drop to drink... sorry, thinking of Barnabas seeing his family drop like flies in 1795...

Probably was Julian.

Julian was mentioned.  Craig Hamrick ( God Bless Him) wrote about them actually saying JULIAN Hoffman. I just got through reading Barney & Co again!!

The part as written was originally male and mentioned in 2 episodes as male but the producers decided it was rather dull and decided to cast a woman.  An actress was hired but she backed out at the last minute, her name is lost to DS history.  Someone involved in production tossed Grayson's name out as a reliable actress good in a pinch, and they called her.  She read that afternoon and filmed her first episode the next day.  There was no confusion as to her gender.

Thanks RJ.  Thanks again for the book.  I also re read it the other day.  Only took two days.  I wish you could write a second one.  I long for more Grayson.  Love your avatar.  She was beautiful.

But how why did they call on an 'outsider' to help? How far along was the Maggie kidnap plot?

Thanks,
Barnabas first took Maggie to Josette's room and told her she was Josette in Ep #236. Julia made her first appearance in Ep #265, after Maggie had already escaped - though a Dr. Hoffman was mentioned in Eps #242 and #263, and Dr. Julia Hoffman was specifically mentioned in Ep #261. Dr. Hoffman was first set up as a blood specialist that Dr. Woodard wanted to examine Maggie's blood samples, but Barnabas stole them before that could happen. Then after Maggie's escape, she was sent to Wyndcliff to be under Dr. Hoffman's care while mostly everyone thought she was actually dead.
