Title: Slightly OT: ABC has killed the soap - AMC/OLTL GONE
Post by: Cousin_Barnabas on April 14, 2011, 10:19:21 PM
I looked, but didn't see this anywhere.

I'm really shocked.

Rumors have been swirling but the stars said it wasn't true.  I am thankful that GH is okay.  It's the top rated soap on ABC. I predict in five years tops all will be gone.  That only leaves us four soaps.  Y&R, B&B, Days, and GH.  Sad sad day.....

I used to watch OLTL years ago. I just think it's sad that these instituations are dying off.....

It's a good thing Dark Shadows was already canceled by ABC. Dark Shadows risen from the grave. ABC cant kill a soap already dead. Dark Shadows is among the undead. ABC Daytime will be back to where it was pre DS. General Hospital and alot cheap programing no one cares about.

I read one report that the audience is still there, but that they watch online.
Y & R gets 5 million viewers on CBS, 11 million more online.
Days grets 3 million on NBC, another 6 million online.
But the networks make no money from the online viewings.

This is not OT, BTW. Louis Edmonds was on AMC for 16 years. Clarice Blackburn won an Emmy writing for AMC.

Sam Hall & Gordon Russell wrote for One Life. Grayson, Nancy Barrett, Anthony George & Lisa Richards have all been cast members.

Soaps were such a big deal when I was younger. What a sad day.

Yeah it really has bummed me out.  Soaps are such a heritage. And to see them replaced with reality garbage just blows....

We can have Jersey Shore filling up space but these wonderful soaps are not worth it apparently.  I hope GH will not be cancelled. I have watched for 20 years.  However, I wouldn't be suprised if it was. Thankfully it's consistent in the ratings from what I gather...

i haven't followed either soap in many years but i was still heartsick about it. they were a big part of my childhood.

because of the shows' daily, serialized nature a single thread of continuity can be traced back to the very day they premiered. that's history.

other networks have been scaling back their soap offerings for years but ABC seemed committed to the genre. hundreds of people are going to be put out of work. this is very sad.

It would be nice if some station like Lifetime partnered with the producers of the soaps to have several stand along TV movies per year.  I think there would be a significant market for them.  In fact, perhaps a weekly, hour long format would work.

I think they should merge the shows and make a new show. Take the best from each side.  Just a thought....

Oprah admits to being an AMC fan. I wonder if her new network could be a platform to save the show & the genre.

There's a nice photograph from 1979 of Louis Edmonds and Ruth Warrick in this article:

the photograph of ruth and louis really sends me back to my childhood(yes,i watched soap operas as a child). something about these fancy rich people in big houses with uniformed servants captured my budding gay imagination.

if i recall the plot correctly edmonds played some sort of travelling carnival riffraff who poses as a gentleman to land the town's grande dame phoebe wallingford.

warrick in this tale occupied something of the same space joan bennett did on DS. they were cut from the same brocaded cloth. caftan clad, bejeweled and ambitiously coiffed matriarchal figures portrayed by actresses from hollywood's "golden age". "regal" is what they were going for. they're greatly missed.

I went into my 2nd depression--the first in April 1971 when DS was cancelled, and my 2nd last week, when I learned that OLTL was cancelled.  I only watched DS for almost 2 years (6/69-4/71), but I have watched OLTL since 6/92...so! I have been watching for nearly 19 years!!  Not an easy addiction to cure.  LOL.

What a fab shot of Louis in Langley mode and the ever gracious Ruth Warrick.

THANK YOU Lydia for the article. Great shot indeed!

Brian--I am so sorry my friend.  Soaps are such a heritage.  Although no one in my family watched GH, I always had been eager to learn anything about TV History so I found out about Laura and Luke and was able to see the episodes from the 70's.  So when they returned I tuned in 1993. I have been watching 18 years.

If anything "GOOD" can come out of it I hope they can focus more on GH and make sure another Soap isn't cancelled.

It truly makes me heartsick..

Wow:

Hoover pulls ads from ABC due to cancellation of 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live' (http://blog.zap2it.com/frominsidethebox/2011/04/hoover-pulls-ads-from-abc-due-to-cancellation-of-all-my-children-and-one-life-to-live.html)

Not that there's a high probability that their campaign will be successful, but talk about a sponsor making a statement.

If only one of DS' sponsors had been so bold...

I have a gut feeling that AMC & OLTL will get saved: the outcry has been unexpected and intense, with thge Writer's Guild condeming the cancellations and a major ABC advertiser pulling out over the soaps' demises.

ABC Daytime head Brian Frons has been killing the genre intentionally, and now it's biting him in the butt.

No, the he campaign will not be successful - the decline of the soap opera audience translates into overall less advertisers/sponsors.  The fact that there is such an intense reaction from those soap opera fans isn't surprising, in fact, to be expected.  Unfortunately, this turn of events was a long time coming.  I feel badly for the fans of the two soaps in question.

OLTL star Robin Strasser and a former ABC executive just publicly accused Brian Frons of intentionally trying to destroy these two shows and Soapnet along with it!
Dancing With the Stars ratings dropped by 13% because of the growing ABC boycott.
A second advertizer, Hershey's, is considering pulling out of ABC.

This is certainly unprecedented. The Daytime Emmys will be very interesting this year!

As for DS reruns, I've no doubt it'll return to the airwaves when the film comes out. Retro themed channels Me TV and Antenna TV have both gotten a lot of requests for it.

The Hoover "boycott" of ABC is a brilliant piece of marketing strategy, IMO. The way they are taking this campaign to the fans now, they will gain more exposure from the angry fans of the cancelled soaps than they could the three or four times a week they paid to advertise on ABC.  The sad thing is that the fans really think Hoover gives a crap about reversing ABC's decision to cancel the soaps. The latest: The New York Post and The Examiner both report that Brian Frons is now in hot water at ABC.
His days at the network may be numbered.
A third advertiser, Loereal, is now threatening to pull from the network over the soap cancellations.

Hershey's says they will pull their ads from ABC if they get at least 10,000 requests to do so.

Meanwhile, in a blow for soap fans, Oprah says her OWN network will not be the two show's saviour. In a video statement that can be seen in a link at www.SoapCentral.com. she pointed out both shows single digit ratings and said they were no longer financially viable.
Ouch!

Susan Lucci is now fielding several offers, including one from Desperate Housewives.

Jonathan Frid's manager and business partner was an associate producer on "Guiding Light" then moved to "One Life to Live" and now is a producer on "General Hospital."  She told me many years ago that the soaps were steadily losing their audience and appeal.  What Oprah said isn't news to the folks in the soap opera industry.   If the audience isn't there to make the soaps sustainable I don't see what good boycotts of ABC are going to do. Both cancelled soaps just jumped ahead of GH in the ratings: the increases for both were substantial.
Interesting to see if that keeps up.
