I couldn't resist capturing this scene.  It's obvious why fans have long referred to the portrait over the liquor cabinet (in reality, Richard Wagner) as "Joshua's portrait"--

Sabrina to Chris:  "There is no way out."
Break a freakin' window.  Sheesh.

Roger to Barnabas, in the East Wing:  "I haven't been here in years."
Roger has a mind like a sieve!  I think it's been only a couple of days since this took place:
Roger, holding his aching head, comes to and looks up at Julia--what are you doing here? he asks.  Liz told me I could come check the architecture in the east wing lies Julia. I'm not in the mood to discuss that, says Roger--the east wing? Yes, says Julia. What am I doing here? he asks.  You must have some reason, says Julia, but you got a bad hit on the head--I think a cold compress is in order. Upset, Roger says I can think of no reason for being here in the east wing.

Bruno thinks he's too good for fistfights.   Stabbing's cooler I guess.

Wasn't that a real knife that Stroka was holding against Briscoe's neck?  Granted, it's probably not the sharpest knife, yet he easily peeled an apple with it a couple of eps ago.

But why use a knife to guard two prisoners when he already had Ned's gun?  The writer (now Sam Hall) seems to be ignoring that fact completely.  And what happened to Sky, btw, who was tied up in the closet?

The lack of continuity with set design, props, costumes AND plot might be a result of the wacky taping sched during the first 2 weeks of March.  After #973 was taped on the previous Friday, the order went like this:
#975, #977, #980, #981, #982, #976, #974, #978, #979 and #983.  [ghost_wacko]

What's the difference between Bruno and Aristede? Not much. They're both sadistic brutes, they both love to use their knives to threaten their victims

I do see some basic differences between the two characters.  We were told that Aristede was a sadist who relished killing for killing's sake, but I see Bruno as more of an opportunist, always considering what was in it for him.  Even when he whipped the werewolf, it wasn't done for the sake of inflicting pain on the creature but for a specific purpose-- to rile it up as much as possible before Jeb showed up.  Bruno bragged that he wouldn't hesitate to kill, but when Jeb told him to get information out of Maggie and gave his permission to kill her, Bruno yelled a little at her, bought her story and let her go, but when Aristede set out to interrogate Amanda (who was not marked for death), she ended up unconscious.  Bruno only boasted about his preference for knives, but Aristede employed torture devices that he aimed in the most horrific manner possible.  And Bruno did have that that one unselfish moment when he saved Sabrina from the werewolf.  (Sabrina didn't see it as saving her life, but I think she would've been wolf chow.)

Both men started new lives as followers-- Aristede fell into service with Petofi in exchange for the security, comfort, and adventure he could provide, and Strak may have made the same claims to Bruno to recruit his service to the Leviathans, maybe with a promise of power thrown in.  However, Aristede knew his place as the servant, and we didn't see the profound jealousy in him that Bruno developed early on for Jeb, even after Petofi treated Aristede horribly.

Aristede wouldn't be caught dead in that fur coat.
Ha ha!  And there's that. [ghost_cheesy]

In the pilot, Joe was dating Carolyn, which of course isn't without precedence on the original show (before she took up with his cousin, ack).  I recall that the couple had one telling scene together.  Shaw was under contract with the production company for a year, which probably guaranteed his continued presence for at least a season had the show been picked up.

Sabrina repeats her threat to Bruno, but both are minus their coats.  In Bruno's case, I guess that's a good thing.

The set around them has undergone some changes too-- the obvious one being that the room has been flipped.  The front door is now on the left, which in the previous ep opened into Bruno's sitting room.  And the door on the right, which Sabrina used to enter the house in #973, now leads to a back room.  The sofa has disappeared, there are different framed maps on the wall, and that's a totally different fireplace.  Weird.

Bruno to Sky:  "If it's a question of my authority versing yours, then Nicholas is going to back me up."
My pet peeve!  It drives me nuts when verse is used that way.

Angelique to Sky:  "Shall I tell you how it's all going to end? Nicholas is going to find an ingenious way of doing himself in. He always does."
Ha, that's so true!  And already, Nick has pointed out that if anything were to happen to Carolyn, Jeb would lose his will to live.  And so he hatches some secret plot that we know will involve Sky, Sabrina, Chris, and the full moon, yet wouldn't telling Bruno to off Carolyn be a much simpler means to the same end?

A hulking shadow lurks in the drawing room near Jeb, but of the crewmember variety.

Would the episode have started and ended with a gun drawn on somebody if a woman had written it?

Blair... if he doesn't kill Jeb: "It's all over for me."  I wonder what that entails...

Probably the same as in 1968--
burning, shrieking, stripped of powers and consigned to hell.
I don't know, Holy Water, I kinda feel bad for Sky. He seems like he wants to makes amends.

OMG, I do too!!!

I liked the tacky ship relief picture hanging on the wall at the carriage house. Or was it the cottage? I don't know. I'm tired and getting quite punchy.

There's a pic of it in the Robservation.  You see something else in that screen cap that you'd never expect to find in Bruno's house... books!

However, he's still a hypocrite for lecturing Angelique about honesty when he wasn't practicing what he was preaching.

And I can't forgive him for ratting out Barnabas to Jeb.

Well, on DS, being hypocritical, a blabbermouth, or even a self-righteous blabbermouth aren't qualities that are unique to Sky. :-X

I have to say I am missing the vets though! I know shooting for HODS is coming up. Had it started at this point?? I am too tired to go look!

Mar 23
And later, does Ang inherit the island?
The island that the bank will probably seize to pay off Sky's creditors? ;)

JONATHAN FRID RETURNS AS BARNABAS COLLINS

Big Finish Productions are proud to announce that Jonathan Frid will be returning to the role of vampire Barnabas Collins for the very first time in "The Night Whispers", an all-new Dark Shadows audio drama. Dark Shadows, the classic horror soap opera, originally aired from 1966-1971 on ABC TV. A feature film remake, starring Johnny Depp, from director Tim Burton, is due to begin shooting before the end of 2010.

As reluctant vampire Barnabas Collins, Jonathan Frid helped establish Dark Shadows as a pop culture phenomenon. Joining him for this special release is Emmy Award winner John Karlen as Willie Loomis, with legendary horror star Barbara Steele, who played Dr. Julia Hoffman in the 1991 Dark Shadows remake on NBC.

Dark Shadows audio producer and writer Stuart Manning comments: "Big Finish have been producing Dark Shadows audio dramas with the classic cast since 2006, and it's an honor to welcome Jonathan back as Barnabas for this special release."

Dark Shadows: The Night Whispers will be released on CD in June as part of Big Finish's ongoing series of Dark Shadows dramatic readings. The first teaser trailer can be heard online at www.bigfinish.com/dark-shadows

A SPECTRE OF THINGS TO COME AND A COUPLE OF BLASTS FROM THE PAST: INTRODUCING SPECTRE TOYS

On July 1st, SPECTRE TOYS will unleash its first products to awaiting collectors. Although a new company, its roots are firmly planted in a storied past. Spectre Toys is led by Rick Phares, the brains behind Majestic Studios, which was known for its innovative and eclectic toy output, such as the 12-inch "Battlestar Galactica" Cylon and the Zuni Fetish Warrior Replica from "Trilogy of Terror."

Out of the past, Spectre's first release is a series of 8-inch action figures from the original 1966-71 ABC-TV gothic horror serial, DARK SHADOWS, which was named one of TV Guide's "Top 25 Cult Shows Ever." Phares said, "The brilliance of the show sprung from its legendary creator-producer-director Dan Curtis. The first scene of the show came to him in a dream and he applied a dreamlike quality to the entire series."

"In keeping with our retro theme," Phares continued, "our `Dark Shadows' line will be sculpted and clothed in the 70s MEGO style. They will look exactly how 8-inch articulated figures of the day would have looked during `Dark Shadows' initial TV run, but with just a few extra modern technical touches. We`ve come a long way in manufacturing since then."

Spectre Toys has partnered with EMCE Toys, the company that brought back the 8-inch classic MEGO format. Founded by pop culture entrepreneur Joe Sena and renowned expert Paul "Dr. Mego" Clarke, EMCE has "MEGO-ized" multiple classic properties such as DC Comics superheroes, "Star Trek", "The Venture Bros." and many others.

"The resurgence of `Dark Shadows' and 70s style figures have come together at the right time," Phares added. "It's been widely reported that a new `Dark Shadows' theatrical film will be shot this fall by director Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins."

Spectre's first "Dark Shadows" release will include the brooding, 175 year old vampire Barnabas Collins and the woman who put the vampiric curse upon him - the beautiful but deadly witch Angelique. Each figure will be limited to a 3,000 piece run. The prototype for Barnabas is available for viewing now at the Spectre Toys website (www.spectretoy.com)

Soon the comic book and pop culture convention season will be in full swing. As Majestic Studios did in the past, Spectre will have a convention-exclusive figure premiering at the San Diego Comic Con, July 21st to 25th. Only 500 pieces will be available at the `Entertainment Earth' booth at San Diego.

That exclusive will be the shape-shifting werewolf Chris Jennings, a descendant of Quentin Collins from the 1890s who was likewise afflicted with lycanthropy. (Yes, Quentin was cured and later time traveled and appeared in modern times, but that's a story for another day – or better yet, go watch the DVDs from www.mpihomevideo.com)

At the San Diego Comic Con, Spectre Toys will be making a few announcements regarding further "Dark Shadows" and Spectre Toys releases. Plus, attendees will meet a special surprise guest from "Dark Shadows!" Remember; make a note to look for Spectre Toys at the `Entertainment Earth' booth. Representatives will be there to answer questions and take fan suggestions for future figures.

Samples of some of the original 1970s figures can be viewed at the Mego Museum website (http://www.megomuseum.com/).

Bruno can't bring himself to take off his Naga ring?

Isn't Bruno’s house a redress of Prof Stokes falt?? Looks a lot like it to me!

Yes, that set got a lot of use.  But I don't remember seeing the ugly fireplace in Bruno's house before.

If this is when they dug up Q, then I think the spell was never taken off, Ang didn't need to be in the vicinity, some connection was still there, which came to the surface because Q was in danger.

This is the time after that, when it struck as Maggie was heading out the door for her date with Barnabas.  Do you suppose Angelique added instructions to her spell-- a laundry list of circumstances in which it would manifest?  One of the recipients is in danger, check.  Romantic dinner, check. ...

IIRC, the spell seems to vanish after
Barnabas crosses over to PT,
so did HE need to be in the vicinity?

Posted today by Bill Condon on The Official Twilight fan page on Facebook:

"Like many of you, I've always been slightly obsessed with vampires, dating back to the prime-time series DARK SHADOWS, which I followed avidly as a kid."

Horror of Dracula should have made the list (even Dan Curtis knew to steal from it), but I am always up for watching Fright Night!

Barnabas, Willie and Stokes say "Hollingshead" in this ep, yet here's a capture of that part of the book cover from the opening scene:

I don't understand!

Now who do you suppose was the recipient of the book found in Angelique's room that bore the author's inscription To the Clio who inspired me?  Hmmm.

How did the light get turned on in Carolyn's bedroom before she walked in the door to Collinwood unannounced?

Thanks!  I thought it meant that he witnessed what seems to be parallel time, but I like that the sentence inspires different interpretations in different people.

Did the actor playing the policeman do the VO?  If so, he also voices Bruno's thoughts a minute later.

John Harkins-- the actor playing the chemist Gladstone-- did the vo.  The police Inspector is in the following ep.

Quote
Bruno hangs around headstone for Thomas Findlay... was he the guy Jeb used to call up a bat?   Wasn't Findlay the name of the 1969 psychic?  Her husband?

Thomas Findley was the first zombie minion summoned after Davenport.  And yes, her name was Janet Findley, and he might have been younger than her, but sure, why not?

Written by Joe Caldwell-- did someone say he replaced Violet Welles?

Yes.  Curtis invited him back after Welles officially left.  He also wrote the previous ep, btw.  Caldwell is also a favorite of mine for the atmospheric touches in his voiceovers and dialogue.

He began officially writing during the Barnabas storyline and left soon after
Woodard's murder
to write for a different network.  I keep saying officially because just as Gothick reported that Welles continued to ghostwrite near the end of the series, Caldwell said he wrote some of the scripts attributed to Ron Sproat during the early Phoenix story.

And he'll be gone again before the switch to 1840.  Not surprisingly, he has expressed disappointment that during this time-- when he returned during 1970 PT-- the show was missing its human element.

Marie Wallace spent her final scene on DS crammed so tightly in a coffin that she had to bend her legs.  She wrote that it was originally built for tiny Nancy Barrett; does anyone know what she's talking about?

Something rolled by the window in the PT room... the upstairs PT room.

Why is it that we never hear the rooster unless a vampire is around?

The wording of the beginning voiceover suggested to me that the parallel time room was created by Barnabas's subconscious to distract him from the troubles that are besetting him in his real life.

This vo suggests that?--  In a seemingly deserted room in the East Wing, Barnabas Collins has stumbled across an incredible discovery. For in that room he has seen and heard a Julia and an Elizabeth who are strangers to him, living lives that are completely separate and different from the lives of the Julia and Elizabeth he has just seen downstairs. For in this room, Barnabas Collins seems to be able to see a world that exists in parallel time; see, but not enter.

Quote
Other vampire victims have remembered things after their vampires were staked, but Roger remembers nothing.

The weirdest reaction to me still is
Carolyn whipping off her scarf and noting that the marks are gone, but never acknowledging why they were there in the first place.
Is that a new or old Naga pin, and did she just forget to take it off?

It's Liz's castoff.

With all the switching back and forth of the sets some sort of editing has come into play.

The opening scene was a replay of the final scene from #970, so the PT room got only one redress.

Quote
It seems as if JF and GH were close because of him taking her by the arm…it could have been scripted but seemed instinctive!

Either way, it was really sweet.

Quote
I wonder if Elizabeth wonders why Julia hasn't changed her outfit!?   I guess I think of weird questions!

Ha!  And I liked that question a lot!
