Dear RaineyPark,

I'm sure you probably already know this, but Catania is also the hometown of the father of arguably the greatest Sicillian-American of all, the one and only, Ol' Blues Eyes himself, Francis Albert Sinatra.

Bob the Bartender, who also admires those two late, great rock and roll Sons of Sicily, Frank Zappa and Sonny "Santino" Bono.

And so it begins, the first appearance of one the most beloved character actors to appear on Dark Shadows.  A man well remembered for his inimitable portrayals as an attorney, a learned judge, and, of course, as the greatest medical doctor  (this side of Dr. Hoffman) who ever put up a shingle in the village of Collinsport, ME.

Actually, Mr. Powell is also known for being a Tony award winning actor, a frequent character actor in films (Three Days of the Condor comes to mind), and the onetime Gortons of Gloucester fisherman in those classy commercials of the 1970's and 1980's.

Bob the Bartender, who once bumped into Randall Drew while crossing Sixth Avenue and 43rd Street.

Dear RaineyPark,

The local PBS station here broadcast a program entitled "Visions of Sicily."   The show featured aerial views of the island.  Taormina was particularly beautiful.  When Francis Ford Coppola filmed "The Godfather," Sicily seemed very drab and brown.  However, this PBS program vividly demonstrated the verdant beauty of the island.

I remember my grandfather telling me how beautiful the island of Sicily is.  And, of course, as the venerable T. Eliott Stokes once said, "The Sicilian talisman is the finest in existence."

Bob the Bartender, who reminds you of the historical importance of the Cicero bean in Sicilian history.

I was hooked when my personal hero, Robert Rooney, resplendent in his flannel shirt, delivered that memorable line to Nancy Barrett in the Blue Whale, "Miss Stoddard, your mother is on the phone for you."

Ben,

Ah, yes.  Florence Henderson the former spokeslady for those wonderful "Wessonality" commercials of the 1970's.  I was sorry to see Florence's son, Greg Brady, get decked by Danny Partridge, a/k/a Donny Bonaduce the other night.

It's too bad that the soap operas never had their own version of "celebrity boxing."  We could have seen the urbane Roger Collins take on the suave Palmer Courtland of All My Children.  (Marquess of Queensberry Rules, of course!)

How about the diminutive Carolyn Stoddard trading punches with the equally diminutive Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) of AMC?

I'd like to see Barnabas "Kayo" Collins go fifteen rounds against the nefarious Stefano DeMara of Days Of Our Lives.

Can anyone think of any other Dark Shadows Characters vs. other Soap Star boxing matches?

Bob the Bartender, who would like to see Sally Jesse Raphael take on Ricki Lake in a ten rounder.

Gerard,

Welcome back.  I'm looking forward to discussing the existentialist ramifications of Bathia Mapes' arrival at Collinwood with you.  By the way, what the heck does existentialist mean?

Dear Fellow Dark Shadows Fans,

I hate to be a nitpicker, but couldn't the A which Ben drew on the top of that barrel for Barnabas just as well have meant A for Abigail as it did A for Angelique?

I don't mean to dump on Abigail, but I think that it's fair to say that Ms. Abigail will never be confused with someone as kind and selfless, as say, Mother Teresa or Florence Nightingale.  In fact, I think that Joshua's little sister is the personification of the word termagant: an overbearing or nagging woman, a shrew.  That's one heck of a witch in my vocabulary!

Bob the Bartender, who wishes that Abigail could be kind towards everyone, sort of like the benign and non-judgmental:

Well, on behalf of Burke Devlin and Bob Rooney, I'd like to say:, (albeit belatedly), "Erin Go Bragh!!!"

By the way, I celebrated St. Patty's Day by having Grandma's pasta fazule soup before chowing down on the corned beef.  It was kind of like of having hot sauce with cold beer.  Buon appettito!

Dear Fellow Dark Shadows Fans,

The poorly-bandaged ghost of Jeremiah looks like to me like the ghost of Jacob Marley, who just cut himself shaving.

Mark,

Three Dog Night had a terrific drummer.  I believe that his name is Floyd Sneed.  (I have to check the linear notes on some of my old albums.)

Three Dog Night reunited several years ago to go on the oldie's circuit.  However, I haven't heard anything about them recently.

Bob the Bartender, who wonders if Roger ever drove his son, David, into Portland to see the double bill of Three Dog Night and the Strawberry Alarm Clock.  Imagine Roger grooving to "Celebrate, Celebrate, Dance To the Music."

Hey Ringo,

I thought that your suggestion of Buzz Hackett as "Fritz the Cat," if Angelique put the feline curse on him was brilliant!  It seems only right that the "Buzz-saw" would become the world's only X-rated cartoon cat.

Hey Stuart,

What about Michael Hadge, a/k/a/ Buzz Hackett as a country squire?  That's kind of like Andrew "Dice" Clay as the younger brother of the Rev. Trask!

Sincerely,

Dear Fellow Dark Shadows Fans,

Did you ever the story that the late, great W.C. Fields had stipulated that the following statement be carved onto his headstone?:

"All things being considered, I'd much rather be here than in Philadelphia"

Well, I wonder if Jeremiah stipulated to Josette, that he wanted the following statement carved onto his headstone?:

"All things being considered, I'd much rather be here than standing next to that dingbat, Millicent, in front of the minister at the wedding altar."

Sincerely,

Bob the Bartender, a romantic at heart.

Dear Mark, Minja and Ben,

Sorry, I must have been having a "senior" moment when I reflected back on those poignant and insightful lyrics of Chuck, Danny and Cory(?), a/k/a Three Dog Night.

You know, I wish that Dan Curtis had let Louis Edmonds (as Roger Collins) sing "Try To Remember" with Nancy Barrett (as Carolyn, of course) on piano in the drawing room of Collinwood (with Barnabas, Liz, Julia and Stokes as Roger's captive audience).

I can see Roger, with one hand supporting himself on the side of the piano, and the other hand holding a rather large snifter of brandy as he intoned the lyrics of El Gallo.  It's a shame that Dark Shadows never made use of Mr. Edmonds' considerable vocal talents.

Now, please excuse while I groove to the sounds of "Momma Told Me Not To Come."

Bob the Bartender, who wishes Mr. R. Rooney would play Three Dog Night's tremendous version of "Easy To Be Hard" on the Blue Whale's jukebox.
