. . .but I think false eyelashes were a standard show-biz makeup item back then (and no doubt still are but have toned down in size a bit). . . As to this thread about Grayson . . . I was going to ask just exactly what a "fag hag" is. . .

Two comments--if we think false eyelashes are more toned down now (on daytime, at least) than 30 years ago, just check out ONE LIFE TO LIVE and the character of Lindsey, who has full makeup and eyelashes IN PRISON!!! LOL.

As for Grayson being a "fag hag". . . since I made that statement, I'd better retract it since I know nothing about her interactions with gay man.  Perhaps a better way to characterize her is to say she's probably an icon for gay men--much like Bette Midler, Bette Davis, Judy Garland, etc. (and not too shabby company to be in!)

Lots of interesting posts about Ms. Hall. ;)

In addition to her work on DS, I have tapes (or DVDs) of her work in NIGHT OF THE IGUANA, SATAN IN HIGH HEELS, END OF THE ROAD, NIGHT GALLERY and GARGOYLES (and I've seen her work in THAT DARN CAT, THE GREAT ICE RIP-OFF and ADAM AT 6 A.M.)  Perhaps the most important aspect of her work to me is that she truly "commits" to the character and situation--i.e., because she believes it, we believe it.

That's the mark of a great actor.

Julia99 says Why [do] gay men love Grayson so much?  My three closest friends, gay men, all love her. . .Why does she ring our bell?. . .

For me, Grayson is the epitomy of the strong woman (as opposed to the victim), and most of her performances are often "larger than life" -- sometime "camp," but sometimes realistic -- in the same way that performances by Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Carol Channing, and even Judy Garland (and numerous other woman stars) are real and larger than life (and sometimes life is "camp."

I can't give any logical reason why Grayson is a favorite of mine.  Perhaps some others on this board -- gay or straight -- can offer their comments.

« on: April 05, 2002, 07:12:52 AM »
Okay, so even though I watched DS' original run when I was a kid and didn't even think about "hunks," I am now a 45-year-old gay man.  So I'll pretend the DS actors are modern-day TV/film stars and rate them with my 45-year-old take on things (colored by some of my memories of my 12-year-old confusion about who I was growing up to be):

10: David Henesy
9: Don Brisco
8: David Selby
7: Keith Prentice
6: James Storm
5: Roger Davis
4: Joel Crothers
3: Chris Pennock
2: Jonathan Frid
1: Grayson Hall--okay, so she's my ultimate fag hag  ;)

Current Talk '02 I / Re: DARK SHADOWS HISTORY
« on: April 03, 2002, 05:27:36 AM »
I was in a meeting with Disney World Management today when someone asked what the date was for their notes.  When another person said "April 2," I almost blurted out that "Dark Shadows aired its final episode on ABC 31 years ago."  LOL.  Guess my mind has kept that date active all these years:  I was in the 8th grade (as someone on this post was) and could not believe it was really ending.  (I even was naive enough to think that we'd get an announcement on Thursday, April 1. . .well, you know what I mean.)  My sole connection with DS for the next 17 years was an audio cassette of the last 4 shows (which I still have).

Thank goodness for MPI and MGM Home Video.

For what it's worth, I hope we will all get behind Darren and DCP, and support the efforts at restorations of both HODS and NODS.!!  If you have any connections to film, TV, collectors, etc--please send them a plea to help in the search for missing footage from HODS and NODS--and let WB know how much we want to see restored versions of the films.

THE '91 Series ran for almost a year while the Original Series went  for FIVE years

Well, as much as I enjoyed the '91 version (I was also around and watched the original!!), the '91 series DID NOT run for almost a year.  It premiered on January 13, 1991, and the last episode (THANKS TO THE GULF WAR AND GWB) aired on March 22, 1991;  it only aired for little more than 2 months. . .;(

Well, the Boston folks beat me to it--sort of--but why not come to Disney World. . .I mean, Orlando!  :D

So what if there are no authentic DS locations here. . .we still have a mouse  ;), and maybe our DS Stars (and some fans) would take in a day or two at the "parks," as we call them here.  I'd be thrilled to escort some of our DS stars and their families around Disney World. . . 8)

Several comments on this thread:

LOL: I bought my first DVDs from MPI in October, 2000:  the first DS DVD and the Dracula/Jekyll&Hyde DVD.  This, I decided, would force me to finally buy a DVD player.

Well, it worked.  I bought my first player in February, 2001.  I had problems with that player and while it was out for repair, I bought another one (June, 2001), which plays my DVDs perfectly.  (The first DVD player would not play the DS ON LOCATION segment, but the second one plays it just fine!)

Subsequently, I've added more DVDs to my collection than I care to say.  It was almost like an addiction--and I guess I'll do the same once DS is released on DVD (I love the  improved picture and sound quality--VHS cannot even touch this quality.)

As far as sales persons at Best Buy:  I decided to buy a turntable (remember those?:  "record players," with speeds at 33, 45 or 78?) and the kid assisting me had never even seen a turntable!!!!  He didn't know what once looked like until I insisted on taking it out of the box and making sure it had a needle (aka stylus) included with the unit.  Damn, I felt old when he said "oh, that's a turntable."  I had the last laugh though:  I told him to consider himself lucky I went ahead with my purchase, and to remember that he had learned something new!!

Anyway. . .DS on DVD:  I'm prepared to buy them as long as MPI is in for the long haul (aka, entire series!)

Current Talk '02 I / More about DS on DVD

From DVDFILE.com:

March 10 - 11

Scary soap - 12:02am

An update on the specs for those upcoming Dark Shadows DVD collections from MPI, which should hopefully please fans of the famous gothic horror-soap opera. Details from MPI are that they plan on releasing the entire series to DVD, with Set One debuting on 5/28. However, since the show as a daily half-hour soap, Set One only includes 40 complete, uncut episodes on four DVDs (beginning with the resurrection of Barnabas Collins) along with newly-produced extras including interviews with series creator Dan Curtis and the cast. MPI will then release future sets starting with Set Two on 7/30, so watch for more details on future volumes soon.

Anybody care to do the math and figure out how long it will take to release all 1225 shows on DVD?

Brian

Thanks, Stuart, guess I'll have to buy the DVDs after all. . . at least the first batch and then decide whether or not to continue.  (Darn it. . .it's just like replacing all those old LPs with CDs. . .here we go again.) ;)

I agree with Raholt about the trust factor. Fortunately, I did not pre-order through Amazon--I would have been mad as hell if I had pre-ordered and then have this delay happen.

As far as future DVDs of DS, unless the video and audio of the series episodes are remastered to "broadcast" quality standards as high as the Pioneer Video releases of the 1963 JUDY GARLAND SHOW (also originally videotaped "live"), then I'll content myself by completing my already sizeable collection MPI DS VHS tapes, and then burn them to DVD (for personal use, of course) in a year or two when DVD burners are available in prices for those of us who aren't millionaires (maybe by then I'll be able to remaster them on my own computer, as well).

I know we heard from Marcy last week about the MPI DVD release of DS, and that it's supposed to begin with Barnabas' arrival at Collinwood. Well, here's release info that I found on DVDFILE.COM, posted on February 18:

"Lost in the 'Shadows' - 1:15pm

"One of the most unusual television series ever, fans of Dan Curtis' cult classic Dark Shadows have been waiting forever for the show to finally hit DVD. Thanks to MPI, on 4/30 Dark Shadows Set #1 arrives, a 6-disc collection containing the entire first season. While extras are slim, each episode has been remastered and are presented in their original 4:3 full frame broadcast ratio with English mono soundtracks, and goodies include Dark Shadows lore, a Dan Curtis bio, and stills. Retail is $69.95."

Seems to me like there's lots of confusion and mixed info going out about this.

Just thought I post it. . .

Grayson is and always will be one of my favorite DS actors (and I can relate to her age when she started on DS--I'm now 45--but I was only 12 when I started watching back in '69, LOL). I first saw her as Magda. . .and Magda is still one of my favorite characters. But I like her as Julia (in all Julia's incarnations), and, to a lessor degree, as Natalie).

Grayson was truly an underated actor. Watch some of her other films to fully appreciate her work. Among my other favorites of her work are: NIGHT OF THE IGUANA; THAT DARN CAT; her NIGHT GALLERY episode; and SATAN IN HIGH HEELS (a camp highlight!)
