Current Talk '02 I / Re: DS - Appropriate for Children?
« on: June 08, 2002, 07:38:04 PM »
I guess I'll add my two cents:  I started watching DS in June, '69 (I was 12) on the living room TV (which was color--the kids' TV room had a B&W).  Sometimes my younger sister also watched.  Mom was usually in the kitchen fixing dinner, 'cause Dad usually got home between 3:30 at 4:00--just as the show was starting--and we usually sat down at the table at 4:15.  (Eventually dinner was moved to 4:30 so I could join them at the table!)  My parents had no problems me watching DS--my Dad had previously introduced me to the old Universal horror films that were shown on Friday nights!!   Brian

Brian.... has only a few posts.... but he has many many stars!. . . I hope you do not mind that I used you as an example.

I have those stars because I recently joined the board's team as archivist for Robservations.  MB is getting some details worked out, and I'll be starting soon.  Since there's no pay involved, I guess stars are the next best thing in terms of compensation.  (Works for me!)  :D

No problem using me as an example. . .I don't take it personally (yet!)   ;)

Thanks, Darren.  I probably will get another brand in the near future, but my current player has had very few problems.  It does play audio CD-Rs and CD=RWs, and MP3s, in addition to all but 3 of my DVDs.  What I've heard is that Samsung's quality is "hit-or-miss," but I've had good luck with other Samsung products.

Now that you mention Panasonic, though, I might look at that brand for my next player:  I recently retired my 1989 Panasonic 20" TV because I bought at 27" TV (Philips, this time--I hope it lasts 12 years like my Panasonic did!) ;)

Hi, Joe.

My first player was a Samsung, too, and it didn't play the Nancy Barrett segment either--but it also didn't play a whole lot of DVDs, so I took it in for service, which took about a month.  During that time, I bought a new player, also a Samsung, which DOES play the Nancy Barrett segment--flawlessly--as well as every other DVD I own except the following: RUBY (VCI),  GYPSY (Pioneer), and  MUNSTER, GO HOME (Goodtimes), all of which have some glitches.  Also, I went through 2 copies of PUTTING IT TOGETHER (Goodtimes) before getting one that plays without glitches.  (I have other discs from each of these companies, all of which play just fine.)  Anyway, I returned the DS set today--I'll wait until the second set is released and maybe order them directly from MPI, and try again.

Current Talk '02 I / MPI DS DVD problems
« on: June 06, 2002, 06:25:33 AM »
Even though I had decided to wait awhile, I bought the new MPI DS DVDs today at the local Borders.  Disc 1 started up fine and has superior picture quality, especially when compared to the very first MPI DS VHS video (The Resurrection of BC and the The Introduction to DS).  I fast-forwarded to the second and third episodes--just fine.  But--Discs 3 and 4 had many problems:  both gave me the dreaded notice "This Disc Cannot Be Played."   FYI, I have a Samsung M301 player, which plays 99% of my DVDs flawlessly (I even watched the new release of Blake Edwards' S.O.B. right after trying the DS DVDs--NO GLITCHES OR FLAWS.)

Anybody else experience problems with the DS DVDs?

Thanks.

I've heard that Dan Curtis . . . always wanted Walter Matthau to play the hippie at the beginning of the film. . .

Also, the famous 'shopping with Gregory' scene. . .Dan's gone a little risky with his choice. . . and is thinking of morphing the head of Keith Prentice (with 'mod' ascot and long hair) onto the body of Jabba the Hutt. . .

LOL, Darren. . .but having heard some of DC's other ideas over the years, the Matthau casting could almost be true.   ;D

By the way, John Karlen does look good--esp. considering he's pushing 70--next year, I think!  (We'll all--hopefully--get there, too, someday!)

Calendar Events / Announcements '02 I / Re: Joan Bennett Films
« on: June 02, 2002, 06:22:52 PM »
One of my favorite Joan Bennett films is THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW, also starring Edward G. Robinson.  It was sort of a follow-up to SCARLET STREET, and, IMHO, a much better film--with a wonderfully fun twist ending.  It's hard to find, but TCM aired it many months ago, so watch their listings.

Just a thought:  I wonder if Anchor Bay would be interested in pursuing restoration and release of HODS and NODS--they've released other DC movies, and I believe have restored other non-DC flicks.

;D

Thanks for the nice comments, everyone.  I'm looking forward to helping out here--should be a lot of fun--and keep me away from some of the more undesirable sites of the "web."  ;)

I want "THE BOX."  Y'all know the one I mean--it shows up all over Collinwood, but it has a prominent place in 1897 in relation to a certain disembodied body part.  :-X

Congrats to fellow poster Darren Gross on the nice comments about his contributions to the commentary for AND NOW THE SCREAMING STARTS.  You can read about the DVD and a brief evaluation of Darren's commentary at  http://www.dvdreview.com/quickpeek/collect/index.shtml

Believe it or not, I waited till 1995 before breaking down and buying a CD player

Gothick,

I didn't buy a CD player until 1993--and I only bought it because the 4 DS CDs had become available through MPI.  I remember that I ordered the CDs and had them FedExed to me--then I went out and bought the player.

Likewise, I bought the first DS DVD and the DRACULA/JEKYLL & HYDE DVD in November 2000--to force me to finally buy a DVD player, which didn't happen until late February, 2001.

Like you, I like to wait until a format is pretty much established.

Not quite, but working on, curmudgeonly. . .

(Who's watching the ON THE TOWN DVD as he surfs the web tonight. . .) ::)

Have to add to Darren's comments, Gothick, that DVD is the way to go.  I bought mine a little over a year ago, and spent the better part of last year replacing my favorite VHS tapes with DVDs.  There is no better medium available (currently, at least) for reproducing video and audio than DVD.  And no comparison when you look at the limitations of VHS.  Best of all--DVDs on the whole are less expensive than VHS tapes!!  But keep that VCR for recording off TV--DVD recorders are still not exactly priced for the average consumer.  (FYI, you can probably get a good quality player for less than $200--if not around $150-$160--at Best Buy or Circuit City.)

I love my DVD.  ;D

The NODS slogan for Australia 'Ghost on a love rampage' is a hoot as well.

You're right, Darren--and they used the same quote, sort of, for HODS:  "The living dead on a frightening love rampage!"  But the HODS poster uses a photo of Carolyn rather than the drawing.

I also have one of the American NODS posters on cardstock, about 40" x 60"--and I think the artwork is very beautiful.  I'm guessing the original painting was a watercolor, from the looks of it (I really don't know much about art), but I'm still impressed with the quality that was put into the artwork on this poster.  (It's the one with Angelique hanging from the tree limb, with some of Angie's various incarnations superimposed on her body.)

"Sensuous, terrifying.  After 200 years Angelique, witch and adultress, returns from the grave!"

Current Talk '02 I / Re: Down Under" HOUSE OF DARK SHADOWS
« on: April 30, 2002, 05:25:50 AM »
FYI, I've purchased a HODS and a NODS lobby poster (through eBay) from Australian sellers--both similar to our American posters, but also different enough to make them interesting.  Each is about 13.25" x 30", on thin paper, and appear to be artists' renderings of portions of the American posters, i.e., the HODS poster  features Carolyn's face as she is staked, and the NODS poster features Angelique and Quentin.  (I also have two American posters--one from each film--which are my frame of reference.)

Not that this post has much to do with the questions, but I thought I'd share because it confirms the "down under" release of these films.
