I never considered DS comics as "horror" comics, although I guess the code may have done so.  For younger fans who might want to know what led to the ban on real horror comics, they can check out this book:

Thank you for the very good information.  I will look into some of the audio recordings as you suggest.

Calendar Events / Announcements '17 I / BIG FINISH audio books
« on: June 24, 2017, 11:43:49 PM »
Due to recent problems with my vision (not the subject of this post, but relevant), I have been listening to old radio shows before bed, rather than trying to read.  I am wondering about the Big Finish audio books (not the full-cast drams, which I have already purchased--and find a mixed bag--and, again, my review is not for this post).

Can anyone share your thoughts on the audio books?  Also, can anyone comment on the Amazon Kindle audible books (quality, dramatic reading or not?

Thanks. Brian

The Last of Sheila is one of my favorites.  I tend to prefer Joan Hackett's work, in general, so I am biased in the "Bobby" case.

Having watched (a few times over the years) Dan Curtis’ DEAD OF NIGHT and TRILOGY OF TERROR II TV movies, I would like to hear from other DC fans which version of “Bobby” they like—specifically, Joan Hackett versus Lysette Anthony?  (BTW, both movies used the same script by Richard Matheson—and Cobert’s music was also he same.).)

Any thoughts?

Since I am far from the "target audience" for this, I can happily stick to the 1940s original monsterfests.

Current Talk '17 I / Joan Bennett, the First Lady of Soap Opera
« on: May 20, 2017, 01:13:48 AM »
I am re-watching (for the umpteenth time) the last few episodes of 1795, and I have to marvel at Joan Bennett’s mastery of the soap opera acting style, especially when it comes to “holding”—and with dramatic purpose—just before commercial breaks.

Of course, back in the 60s (as a pre-teen), I had no idea about Joan Bennett as a big Hollywood star in the late 1930s and 1940s.  She was just “and Joan Bennett as...” to me.

I know MacDonald Carey appeared on DAY OF OUR LIVES, but I don’t think he was quite the star that Joan Bennett was.  Are there any other big stars from the Hollywood days who appeared on daytime soaps AFTER they had been stars (even as their star were somewhat fading)?  Or was Joan Bennett the first?

She truly is a star on DS!

Current Talk '17 I / Nancy Barrett
« on: May 08, 2017, 03:02:26 AM »
I have been watching the end of the 1795 story/episodes (maybe for the 3rd time since the original VHS release—I did not see them in 1968) and I am constantly impressed with Nancy Barrett’s versatility as a character actor. Her other characters (from Carolyn to Charity/Pansy to Melanie, among them all, are validation of her great talent.

Though I love all the actors and appreciate their work, the only other actors on DS who, in my opinion, equal Nancy’s versatility, are John Karlen, Thayer David, Louis Edmonds.

Glad it was new.  Sam is also seen as the winner passes in front of them.  Grayson looks really happy for Ms. Kedrova.

Watching "Feud" on FX got me to poking around YouTube for early-1960's Oscars footage, and I came across a clip showing Grayson Hall, so I thought it might interest others.  (Apologies if this has been posted before--I don't recall seeing it).

From the trailer and IMDB listings, it doesn't look like the entire story is being told.  Not going to spoil it for those who don't know the book (or TV movie), but if you do, you'll know what I mean...

Thank you all for your kind words.  I've been busy with work, so I haven't checked the board in a few days, hence my delay in thanking you.

It was a big one, too--ten years older than DS is!  [snow_rolleyes]

Patti, I don't know how I read slavery into your post.  I was watching a program about that the other night, so somehow I read that you were looking for a book about which states were slave states.  My goodness, getting old is not fun.  Best of luck with your search.  Brian

Patti--take a look at the article in this link, and see if any of the titles/descriptions sound familiar.

I see at Amazon in both DVD and Blu-ray (as a double feature noted above) for around $10 - $13.
