Hey, Darren, I've been pestering MPI for almost 2 years about the upcoming CD release of all of Cobert's DS music cues. I even joined the DS MPI DVD club just for those CDs.  (Yes, I can get the DVDs cheaper at Amazon, but the CD set was only promised to club members!)  Do you have any idea when we'll finally have the chance to buy this set?

Thanks,  Brian

Current Talk '06 II / Leviathan story vs 1970PT story
« on: July 09, 2006, 03:55:23 AM »
I know many fans have blamed the Leviathan storyline for the ultimate demise of DS, but having finally re-viewed (meaning I saw both storylines on TV way back in 1969-1970, and also on VHS some years ago via the MPI tapes) those episodes yet again, this time on the DVD releases (and because of this, I'm behind on viewing DVDs by 4 sets!), I find the 1970 PT shows very boring and difficult to get through due, in part, to the  overused REBECCA and JEKYLL AND HYDE references.  At least the Leviathan story referenced, in part, the weirdness of Lovecraft, whose work was not as well known as DuMaurier and Stevenson, and thus was more fresh.  I've decided that I actually prefer the Leviathan story to 1970 PT, as the PT story now (in hindsite, of course), really comes across as an excuse to take the main actors away while they filmed the movie.

That said, at least the PT story sets up the new character of Roxanne, who would be very important in the 1970 summer and subsequent 1840 stories.

Anyone else have thoughts to share?

I'm watching a documentary (not a porn film!) called GAY SEX IN THE 70S.  Referenced halfway thru is a "former TV studio" that was transformed to the disco STUDIO 54.  Was this the old DS studios? does anyone know?

 :D

It's quite amazing that anything originally shot on videotape--including DS--survives for us today.  Some recent DVD releases from old shows like THE BELL TELEPHONE HOUR and THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW include segments that were taped in B&W way back in the early 60s, and even some taped in color as early as 1961.  Of course, those were shows that might have historic significance, so it's great that they were saved.  No one ever thought the soaps would see light of day again, so it's no wonder the networks recorded over the tapes--tape must have been very expensive back then.  As for shows I'd like to see, how about THE EDGE OF NIGHT, in the early 70s, when there were haunted mansions and ghosts stories, probably thanks to DS!

Thanks, all, for the warm wishes.  Sorry I haven't replied sooner, but I spent my big day driving from Ohio to Florida--driving my Mom from the family home in Ohio to her little winter place in Florida.  Then work. . .work. . .work.  Tonight's the first chance I've had to check the board, so again thanks much for wishing me well.  Now about next year. . .maybe we'll want to pass on that one (it's a biggie!!)  ;D

Happy 2006 to everyone!!

Current Talk '05 II / Re: Disappearing Characters and Speculations

Hannah Stokes used her knowledge of herbs and magic and the tarot to cross over from 1970 PT to 1970 non-PT, and in the process changed herself from a middle-aged woman into a young man named Sebastian Shaw, who would use his (her?) magical talents to write astrology charts for Elizabeth and many others.  Thus, DS would have one of television's first transgenders--not to mention the use of the fountain of youth.

One of my favorite phrases is "perfectly all right" as in "I'm perfectly all right."  (I believe Stokes says that at least once in HODS--I've also heard it on the series.)

Of course, one can be perfect, or one can be all right, but I think perfectly all right is a little much.   LOL

I always thought Petofi escaped the fire by using his powers to go into a parallel band of time, where he stayed until he was ready to come back to this band of time.

Okay, MB and Midnight---you might wish to explain--for our younger friends on the board--exactly what a phonograph (aka record player) is.  I only say this because three or four years ago I went to Best Buy in search on a "turntable."  The display example did not have a stylus (needle), so I asked the very young salesboy to open one of the Sony turntable boxes, with the promise that if it included a needle I would buy it.  We went to the front of the store (where those guys hang around checking receipts) and the kid opened the box and I showed him the stylus/needle and his reply was: "oh, so that's what a record player looks like"!  Despite his lack of knowledge, I bought the turntable--but I was still in shock that a salesperson at an electronics store wouldn't know what a turntable/phongraph/record player was.

Of course, I have friends who stop by and are in awe of my Akai reel-to-reel tape deck, but that's another story.  LOL.

Darren, After thinking about it, I wanted to save you some time explaining, so I googled IB Tech and came up with this link.

Darren, now that I've offered my congrats, may I ask what an IB technicolor print is?  I think I understand the three-strip technicolor process after watching the Warner Bros docs on the restoration of GONE WITH THE WIND and a few others (can't wait to see THE WIZARD OF OZ restoration docs and final film results!), but what is the difference in formats?

Thanks,

Brian

Great news, Darren.  Let's hope WB will let us have HODS soon while they decide how to handle NODS.

Folks, come on, let offer more positive reflections on the MGM 91 release.  6 months ago, I left the Median Domain ONE LIFE TO LIVE board ONCE AND FOR ALL because of the horrible, destructive and personally insulting posters who attacked not only the writers and producers, but the actors as well.  That site had many sad, unhappy and vindictive people posting.  Let's not see that here at the DS forum.  DS fans are and have always been nice, positive, supportive folks.  Let's keep that attitude here on the board.

Current Talk '05 II / Re: 1991 Series To Be Released On DVD

My goodness, so much negativity about the "widescreen" presentation of the '91 DS series when no one has even seen it!

There once was a TV show called SOAP that was attacked by the conservative religious element as an assault on Christianity and a jeopardy to the moral fabirc of this great country--BEFORE THE SHOW EVER AIRED--all because of the homosexual character played by Billy Crystal.

My point is--let's not pass judgement until we see the DS widescreen version.  Most likely, the aspect ratio will only be 1.66:1, as opposed to the normal TV ratio of 1.33:1.  Frankly, to the average eye, there isn't much difference.  Now, if MGM uses an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 or 2.35:1, then we might have some issues to discuss.  Further:  Sony/MGM did not have to release this at all!  So let's give them credit for at least acknowledging the franchise.  (WB, are you paying attention?)

BTW, my Amazon copy was shipped today--I'll look for it on Friday.  Meanwhile, my VHS copies are still here and I'll transfer the unaired footage to DVD for supplemental use.

Current Talk '05 II / Why WB should release HODS on DVD
« on: October 10, 2005, 01:57:00 AM »
If Warners can spend the time and money to release NIGHT OF THE LEPUS on DVD, why the heck can't they do the same for HODS?  Granted, we're still waiting for the restoration of NODS, but a nice clean transfer of HODS would be most welcome.  And enough of the actors are still with us--maybe some could be hired to do a commentary track!  For more about LEPUS, check this link.
