In the new movie Secret Window, Johnny Depp plays horror writer Mort Rainey, but every time I've seen the trailer over the past week or so, it sounds like the announcer is saying Mark Rainey. The first time I saw it, I thought Mark had done pretty good for himself to have Depp portraying him on screen. [clap]
Then I find out that I just heard it wrong. [crazy]

Writers, especially horror writers, tuckerize others to an alarming extent ("tuckerizing" being the practice of using a form of a real person's name, usually a friend, in a story). One of the book dealers that regularly picked up Deathrealm, which I edited from 1987-1997, was a friend of Stephen King's and told me that King periodically got copies of the magazine. So when, in the early 90s, "Secret Window, Secret Garden" came out in Four Past Midnight featuring Mort Rainey, I wrote King and jokingly asked if the name was a pure coincidence or did he have it out for me. He wrote back, and I quote:
"No, the name is not a coincidence. In fact, I expect John Shooter may show up on your doorstep with a chainsaw in one hand and a pair of scissors in the other!"
So it looks like I've been tuckerized by King. ;) I've got the letter framed over my desk (although I might want to take it down for safekeeping, since I'm told a signed letter from Stephen King is worth a couple of hundred bucks). I've been tuckerized by several other writers, and my favorite is Wayne Allen Sallee's: The Rainey-Marklyn House, an insane asylum in Chicago. Friends, you have not been tuckerized at all until you have been made into an asylum.
In regard to Secret Window, my friend and fellow writer James Robert (BOB) Smith asked how come, if Mort Rainey is based on me, how come he's played by Johnny Depp instead of someone like Danny DeVito?
I think John Shooter might need to show up on BOB's doorstep.

That's exciting! The first time I saw the trailer I about fell out of my seat. I could've sworn it said "Mark", but to find out he was named after you is even better.
John Shooter, brrrr!
I'd never heard of the term "tuckerize" before. Would've guessed it meant to be immortalized in song by the Marshall Tucker Band. ::)

Way to go, Mark! [hello]
I also could have sworn that the announcer calls Depp's character "Mark Rainey." Mort or Mark though, this seems like a movie worth watching.

I bribed the announcer to say my name instead. ;)
I hope the movie will be good. I hate to say it, but I was not particularly impressed by the original story.

BUT, you couldn't ask for a better actor to be "playing you".
If Depp is in it, I'll be watching it. ;D
Wow...it really IS based on you. That's quite something!
My favorite actor playing one of my favorite writers!! [thumb]
(Hey ya know, they should pay you something)
-
How 'bout that! Quite exciting!! :)

Only the name, not the character, is similar. I shouldn't wish to be in Mort's shoes. ;)
(Hey ya know, they should pay you something)
Why, yes they should, shouldn't they? But wait... if I had to pay all the people whose names have found their way into my tales, I'd have had to file for bankrupcy a long time ago...

Yeah, I know. I just didn't know how to word it. That's why you're a writer and I'm not. [lghy]
[deal2]
Still, he hasn't just used a name extremely close to yours, but the character is also a scifi/horror writer, yes? (And we all know your writing is a horror) lol
...So there ya go. [hdscrt]

That's Great Marcus!! But what do writers call it when they use the real name of a friend in their fictional stories? In Elizabeth Massie's book, 'A House Divided', one Mr. Robert Issel(Hey.....that's me!) ;) appears in text as a trail-blazer of sorts. ;D

That's called Bobubizing, and although it's not quite as common a practice as Tuckerizing, some of us have been known to do it.
A House Divided is the other novel I co-wrote with Beth Massie, although my name's not on the cover for contractual reasons. Some of the Civil War research we did for Thomas Rathburn's background in Dreams of the Dark found its way into that book as well.

Congratulations, Mark, on being immortalized on celluloid by Johnny Depp! I'll never be able to watch Ed Wood the same way again! (I'm just kidding you! You don't particularly care for angora sweaters, do you? Just kidding you again!)

Okay....that's it.....where's the change-of-name form on this forum?

I saw Secret Window tonight too. Johnny Depp and John Turturo were much better than the movie as a whole. It was reasonably close to the story, which, as I said, didn't do a lot for me; but Depp was fabulous, a bit surly, with some inspired lines. And I kinda liked the ending, which I'll not spoil here. I'll give it a C for content, an A+ for casting.

Gratuitous babbling -----> A consultant on Law & Order was once Ass't DA here in my neck of the woods. Friend of mine was the DA at the time. Knows I love Law & Order and had my name tossed into a script. Dead woman who was never depicted, only named, was named for me.

Law and Order once had a character named Karlen....a female judge who survived an attempt on her life. I recall wondering if someone associated with the show was an old New York theatre buddy of Johnny's and did that for a laugh.

Which episode?! I can't believe I didn't notice it!

I'm a Law and Order junkie. I'll have to watch out for this one!

An early on one, during the Moriarity years. It was the episode about the woman offering alternative treatments for breast cancer- they are trying to contact other patients, and rattle of names, turns out none could be reached, since all had died. My name is in that list.

Thanks, I know the one. Cool!
