Current Talk '14 II / Re: Today in Soap Opera History (November 23)

Is Doctor Who consdered a soap? True, it was recorded virtually live to tape and was serialized. Still,  I don't think of it as a soap.

Thank you Gothick. Yes there were several of those Files Magazines, and I have a number of them. Unfortunately, I don't have the one with Sam Hall's interview. Does anyone know which edition has the interview? I've seen them on EBay and Amazon with variable prices from fairly reasonable to outrageous. I have 3 or four of them, counting the "Tribute" book that was widely released and achieved an almost official status when it was heavily promoted by Walden Books and B. Dalton Books around the time the NBC series was airing.

Despite the fact that I was a fairly obsessive DS collector, I passed on many of the Files Magazines. I've checked the ones I did buy and can't find the Sam Hall interview. Does anyone know the volume it in which it was published?

Current Talk '14 II / Re: DS Watching Habits
« on: November 11, 2014, 03:32:14 PM »
Lately, I've been trying to watch the eps on the exact day they aired in '66-71. For example, today is November 11, 2014. That date in 1969 was a Tuesday, just as today is. Unfortunately that does not usually work out exactly. '68 was a leap year and '13 was not. So, I was out of sync by a day for a while. I will be again in 2016 for the last month or so of the show. The last DS ep will "air" on Friday April 1st.

Maybe he just had one more appearance on his contract. They might have been deciding whether or not to call him back.

It's beyond bizarre at the very end of the show that Kendrick Young (played by John Karlen) comes to Collinwood to solve the mystery of his disappearance, then winds up leaving without ever really talking about Stella for the last few weeks of his time there.

[spoiler]Kendrick does find out about Stella's fate. He discovers that she was killed by Melanie when she was possessed. Because she was not in control, he's able to forgive her.[/spoiler]

Perhaps he finally grew up? [hall2_wink] [hall2_smiley] [hall2_wink]

Actually I've argued that very point to others. A lot of time has passed. I think he worked through many of his demons, just like people often do in real life. Still, the change was not explained or even remarked upon. That's a bit of a plot hole.

Disappearing characters is not always a bad thing. The eternally unpopular Ned Stuart is never seen after 1897. No one seems to miss him, including Sabrina.
You are technically correct. He is never SEEN again LOL. He does appear in Return to Collinwood. Apparently he also has a personality overhaul. His behavior is totally different!

Did Chris Pennock marry a fan as well?

Great article, David! Thanks for sharing.

I won't swear to it,but I believe Julia was in at least two of the Ross novels. I think they were B, Q, and the Body Snatchers and the Sea Ghost. Anyone know for sure?

I don't remember Quentin being marketed as a werewolf, only as a ladies man with big sideburns. I do remember him being touted as a zombie though. I don't think he was even the werewolf in the green card series. Of course, that's just my memory.
Quentin was a werewolf in every Ross novel in which he appeared as well as the Gold Key comics. The Groovy Horror Heads named the werewolf one Quentin. I was shocked when I heard the audio of NODS and discovered it was not a werewolf story. CBS showed it too late for me to watch it, so a friend audiotaped it and talked me through the visuals. At that point WLVI 56 had just finiished showing the first year of syndicated episodes in April, and NODS aired in June. I'd read many of the Ross novels and some of the comics. Although I'd never seen the horror heads commercial, I'd always thought Quentin was as much the werewolf of the show as Barnabas was the vampire.

Same here - probably because Quentin was a werewolf for such a short time before he was cured. When I think of the werewolf, I tend to always associate it with Chris. And when I think of Quentin, I tend to associate him more with the Dorian Grey aspect of his character.

I came into DS through the first year of syndication, the Ross novels, and the comics. For me, Quentin was a werewolf, first and foremost. I had no idea about the portrait until about 7 or 8 years later. I was surprised that he was not always the werewolf as that's how the licensing depicted him.

I don't want to read any more of this thread because I've not seen any of this series. I hate cliffhangers, especially ones that go unresolved. From what I've gathered, this season is s self contained story? If so, I'll watch it at my next opportunity.

There were lots of good times though, David. The Egypt trip with Diana was one of the top 100 high points of my life. It's not as high as I thought it was then. Now that I'm married,  have a daughter, and moved on in my career, the trip is not quite as significant as it once was compared to family events. Still, it was something I'll remember alll my life, and it would not have happened without the Festivals. You and I rubbed each other the wrong way sometimes, especially in the close quarters of the boat and the Egyptian heat, but I always liked and respected you, David. I was a bit of a pain too, with all the bad puns. That's more in control now LOL. I think you are wise to keep in touch with those who were good to you and avoid situations where you will come into contact with those who are not. I wish you nothing but the best.
