Current Talk '05 II / Re: In Defense of Roger Davis -
« on: December 20, 2005, 05:13:31 AM »
Earlier in this thread, someone said that Roger Davis wouldn't be attending any more DS festivals.  This was the first I had heard of that.  Did something happen at one of the festivals that led to his making this decision?  Has he publically stated that he would not be attending in the future, and if so, why?

Hi,

No, he has not publicly stated that he won't be attending any more Fests, which is the purpose of the reminder in Reply #13.  Sorry!

I guess since you guys are on everyday, you don't have a need for regional moderators then? Then again, I don't know SMF boards very well, so I don't know if you can even have regional moderators. XD

Hi, Ian.  Well, no one currently has "Moderator" under their username, but that's not to say they don't exist.   [santa_wink]

No, the poll starter does not have that option, nor do regular topic starters.  However, and this is where your terminology is a little confusing-- moderators do have that ability, but the title of moderator belongs to a limited number of cousins on the Forums.  Mods for each board can be found at the top of the board listing.  For example, at the top of this board is: Testing. 1, 2, 3... (Moderator: Mysterious Benefactor).

Dom, our Global Mod, unfortunately had to take a personal leave from the boards.   [santa_sad]

I was wondering if the board stops counting after a number of minutes if you're inactive but don't close the browser.  I get interrupted, or I get up to do things, forget I'm even on here, and can come back hours later and realize I had been reading some posts.

once you've been inactive for a period of 15 minutes, you're no longer listed or counted as being "online" unless or until you actually start to do something again.  (The 15 minute period is something that will be scalable on the new system, and the online list will actually say something like "Cousins who've been active in the last 15 (or 10 or 5 or whatever) minutes.")
The home page continues to list "Cousins active in past 15 minutes."

From The Late, Late Comer by Marc D. Allan:  (not THAT Mark Allen   [santa_wink])

"He's taking the monologue to a new level by having an underlying story theme," late-night historian Ben Alba says. "But at the same time, because he's able to be so spontaneous in that framework, it harks back to Steve Allen."
Allen launched "Tonight" and the whole late-night talk show genre in 1954. He opened his first show with this joke: "In case you're just joining us, I want to give you the bad news first: This program is going to go on and on-- forever. It's a long show, goes on from 11:30 until 1 in the morning. We especially selected the Hudson Theatre for this show because it sleeps about 800 people."
Late-night hosts have been massaging that format since, and never more so than in the era of 24/7 news proliferation. But for an outsider such as Ferguson, who mines his own reservoir of angst for raw material and gets just 45 minutes with the staff to hone an idea into a show-opening narrative, the stakes are higher: What if he's got nothing?

For subscribers to the LA Times, today's magazine cover article on Craig Ferguson includes, in its opening paragraphs, insights on Ferguson from DS Forums cousin Ben-- the only late-night TV expert quoted in the article.  If anyone is interested in the text of his quote, just say the word.

What is it she shouts?
Sounds like Abuscus?

She cries, "Abigail," followed by "Barnabas."

I love that scene!  Trask is SO intense that he almost seems to be manhandling his costar, though of course he isn't.  No matter how many times I watch it, I get goosebumps when he forces Vicki to the ground and yells, "Down into the dust.  I have the witch!"

which could explain the discrepancy, being a nice guy sometimes but not necessarily on stage.

Several years ago, RD publicly confessed to reading the unflattering things that fans were saying about him on the original Sci Fi boards (where many of us met), and he did seem to mellow a bit after that in his dealings with fans.  Before this admission, in my personal experience he was neither pleasant on stage nor one on one with fans at his t-shirt table or elsewhere during DS events.

I wish people were given more time to edit their posts. It seems just like after two seconds your time is up for corrections

I hear you, stefan, but you can preview posts indefinitely before submitting them.  Then you've got 120 secs. to make a first edit, and 120 secs. after that, etc.  The mods can see if you're still working on a post and thus wait to read it.  (At longer than 120 secs., we ran into problems with posters returning to edit posts after they'd already been moderated.)

Can you please attribute your quotes to their authors, especially if they're from another page?
