Cool site.  I don't really have time to go through it all, but I like it and will re-visit.  The collection of quotes from Prof. Stokes is something I particularly enjoyed seeing.

I just did a Google search on the location of the Double Tree because after I posted, I wondered if it was the same place where they had a Festival a few years ago.  It seems to be.  Lyndhurst does look as if it is located such that you could walk there.  Hopefully somebody will be able to give you a ride.  The actual town is down route 9 a ways and I think is completely inaccessible to foot traffic.

Maybe you'll buddy up with another fan, or group of fans, and you can all caravan along.  Like I said, it was nice in the days when one did not have to get creative with transport if one wished to attend a DS fan event...

I wouldn't call it walking distance.  I remember it being on a big strip-like road with no sidewalks, so walking more than to the next hotel down the strip is kind of problematic.

Sorry to hear the Festival info did not bother to explain this to people.  *rolls eyes*

And I'm really sorry I am not going to get to see you!  The whole thing just sounds like a mess.

Best wishes,

Steve

Current Talk '12 II / Re: The Creepiness of Anthony George
« on: July 17, 2012, 05:20:25 AM »
Cousin B, I've heard that theory, but I don't know that I'm convinced.

It may be that George got listed first because of his starring role in the early 1960s series Checkmate (which also starred Sebastian Cabot and an incredibly young Doug McClure).  Maybe.

Being listed first in the scroll hardly equates to star billing IMO.  Just how I see it.

A few comments:

Anthony George did not get "star billing."  The only actors who received special billing on DS were Moltke and Joan Bennett.  In the final few months Jonathan Frid finally got the special billing he had deserved since 1967.  Everyone else on the series was just billed as name and role.

I agree with michael c--Burke's instincts about Barnabas WERE correct, and he had very good reasons for trying to get Vicki not to go to the Old House.

As far as acting goes, I thought George wasn't right for the romantic stuff, but some of his antagonistic scenes with Barnabas were really well played, particularly the "I thrust, you parry" scene in the Blue Whale.  At least, that's how I see it.  If you don't like the actor from the get-go, the guy could cry real tears while delivering a Shakespeare sonnet and your reaction is just going to be "feh."  And frankly, if Roger Davis declaimed from the Bard, *my* reaction would be "feh."  I just happen to think George was better than most fans seems to feel.  I also love the scene where Burke and Miss Hoffman have a deliciously man-to-man talk in the drawing room over cigarettes.  Just grand stuff IMO.

The Burke character was, as michael c points out correctly, a holdover from Shadows' origins in the realm of paperback Gothic novels.  The aggressive, controlling, demanding mystery man who both intrigues and repels the heroine.  It's kind of frustrating to think that if Conard Fowkes hadn't asked DC for a pay raise, Frank might have been Vicki's love interest and Barnabas' rival in 1967 and we might have had a very different story.  I presume the Burke character was retained because he was established and for whatever reason a re-cast of Frank was not considered.

Do you drive, Philippe?  You'll need to rent a car, or find someone at the Fest-ette who has one.  I hope you can visit those sites!

I'm not going.  Have fun.

Maybe some day, there will again be a DS fan event that one could attend without having to resort to exotic ground transport miles away from any major transit depot.  One where fan vendors were welcomed, and where a convivial atmosphere of fannish appreciation reigned.  Sadly, I fear those days are gone forever.

Current Talk '11 I / Re: How to explain 1840 Angelique...?
« on: July 16, 2012, 04:50:28 AM »
Just a line to note that as far as I am concerned, the audiodramas are NOT original series canon.  They are their own canon.  One can consider them the same way one might consider fanfic--as suggestions with regards to explication of canon, but even well-written suggestions are only that--NOT canon.

It may be that as fandom evolves, this attitude will fall away and people will just see some kind of amorphous blob of everything that has ever been put out with the name DS on it--from OS episodes to the Gold Key comics to the Burton/Depp production and beyond.  To me, each iteration is emphatically its own universe, its own canon.

I actually thought that the way the Stairway through Time worked was explained fairly lucidly in the excerpts from Quentin's diaries Julia read out in the drawing room in 1970.  One of the most fantastical conceits of DS because they casually have Quentin anticipating Einstein's concept of space-time by around 90 years.  It is the kind of thing that will appeal to the steampunk crowd if any of them decide to start watching the show.

From the descriptions of the film, Michael, it sounds as if most of them were descendants of that ill-fated 18th century gallant, Vodka Collins.  lol

At some point in the 1966-67 episodes, there was mention of an Aunt Margaret, I believe, who lived in Boston.

There was clearly more to the Collins family beyond what was revealed in the canon episodes, although there are hints if you pay attention and think carefully.  (Of course, it's hard to deal with outright conflicts in continuity, such as Josette's original maiden name being La Freniere, if I'm remembering correctly.)

In the 1967 storyline, Barnabas, Vicki, and Burke visit a mysterious house one evening and Vicki finds a handkerchief embroidered with a monogram that begins with the letter F.  (I think it was F. McC. C. but it's been too long since I last viewed the episode to be sure.)  I like to think that that was one of Flora's homes and that this was a foreshadowing of Flora's introduction to the story, even though I realize that at this point, the writers had no thought of 1840 or characters who might become part of the narrative down the line.  Just one of those moments of DS serendipity.

Current Talk '12 II / Re: Mary Cooper as Josette in 1841PT
« on: July 14, 2012, 03:45:13 PM »
Just speaking personally, I found Cooper a ghastly miscast as Josette.  I don't think the actress was at all to blame.  Her reason for being there is unclear until almost the very end and her only motivation seems to be to react to Bramwell's wild and woolly antics.  I also found her line readings really flat and wooden.  She really needed a voice coach for the role but obviously nothing like that was available in the world of DS.

I'm glad that some viewers did enjoy the portrayal.  I personally tend to fast forward through her scenes because I find her physically uncomfortable to watch--along the same lines as a certain hair-clutching "actor."

Maybe they just really don't have a clue what to do with vintage genre material, and the Burton/Depp project simply muddied the waters?

Not a fan of the box "art," btw.

I still think Johnny Depp is at his best when he's in full, fabulous drag, and apparently I'm not the only one who thinks so:

As is well known around here, I'm not a fan of remakes, but Depp as Dr. Frank N. Furter would be something to see.
