Dan Curtis could have waited a little longer for the strike to end like the producers of all the other soaps did.

DC was someone who'd threaten to fire and hire new writers whenever the writers wouldn't agree to do what he wanted. Why do I not find it hard to believe that he might also have had a similar attitude that if actors wouldn't come to work, no matter whether they had an excellent reason for staying away or not, there were dozens of other actors he could easily hire to take over their roles?  ::)
