In case anyone here does not know or remember this, Roger Davis' then girlfriend and future wife, Jacklyn Smith auditioned for the role of VIctoria Winters after Moltke left. She lost the role to Betsy Durkin.

Does anyone here think that Jacklyn Smith might have done a better job?

I can't believe that she lost out to Betsy Durkin. Be as that may, I think Jaclyn Smith would've brought a more innocent and softer appeal to the role of VW IMHO.
Betsy Durkin comes on too strong as if she's trying to claim the part of VW all to herself and doing a poor job at that.

It took a few years for JS to loose her lovely Texas accent. . i'm sure that had something to do with not getting the role. . she didn't sound like she was from Maine. . .

Vicki wasn't from Maine (at least wasn't supposed to be raised there).

Maybe Vicki was the lovechild of one of Elizabeth Collins Stoddard and a Texas oilman. And then Vicki goes to Professor Stokes and has some of her memory restored to find out about her past and has her accent restored.

I've seen the DS series at least three times including the original, and really didn't remember BD being THAT terrible. True, she hadn't reached the acting level of AM, but as was stated, she came into a difficult situation. Kind of like a back-up quarterback; there to do a job and expected to excel. After having seen her again, I concentrated on her performances to see if I missed something. Not so. She did what was expected, if not up to AM standards.

and going to say that I tried to keep an open mind today. I honestly think Betsy Durkin did a good job! Not great, but not bad enough to warrant the comments.

Glad you brought this up, kuanyin! I've been wanting to start a thread on this but I've barely had the time to watch the show, (never mind getting to my computer).

I've only seen the Betsy eps once before now. I hated the performance. This go-around I promised myself to watch objectively and closely. I agree with you. I think BD is doing a good job.

My turn to climb out on that limb - She is certainly a far better performer than several of the actors that have been (and are currently) on the show.

Like Don Briscoe, who's not so much an actor as an image carved out of wood.

What?  An image carved out of wood???  LOL
HUH?  Am I missing something here?  I've never noticed anything wrong with his acting.

What the......HUH?  [hdscrt]
Guess I haven't watched him closely enough.

My dear scout75,
What in God's name is wrong with Briscoe's acting?  I mean, he's no Thayer David, but...jeez...he always seemed quite serviceable to me.
What in the....HUH?  Wood?

Well, as Tom Jennings, the criticism is somewhat warranted. I think he does a good job as Chris. Last time I watched these shows, I thought him the actor that improved the most on the show. But, this time I noticed that he was always OK as Chris and wooden as Tom, even in the SAME episode! (Surely, you remember his infamous line"JOOOOOOLIIAAAHHHH!"?)

I guess some don't even care for him as Chris. I don't understand it myself. I think he is hunky as all get out and as for acting, somewhere in the middle. Sure, he is no Thayer David, but he isn't a screechy ol'hair puller either!

He's no damn good at it.

I have no personal ax to grind with Briscoe, and obviously, there are several like you, my dear Connie, who think he's hunkalicious, it's just...

Well, let me put it this way: I remember reading one of the KLS books and feeling relieved to see that Briscoe retired from acting and moved back to Tennessee.
