I was merely trying to let VAM know that he did not offend all women on the board.  Reading VAMs message led me to believe that was the assumption.  Now this is my opinion and mine only.

I hear ya, J99, and I know you were being supportive of another poster because she seemed offended.  And I told her when she contacted me off the board that I thought it was sweet and thoughtful to post an apology, but my point here was that no offense was ever intended in the first place.

And while I acknowledge that your intention was good and I'm sorry if I've caused you any embarrassment, I also have to go with the Board guidelines on this:

4. If a poster feels wronged, slighted, or offended by another poster, these disagreements should be taken up in private e-mail between the posters. These disagreements may also be brought to the forum moderator, if necessary, but members are strongly encouraged to solve these problems among themselves off-board.

Curling irons go waaaaaay back.  To 1795 I'm not sure. . but to the 1800s and early 1900s I'm certain. They were heated over the fire or a lamp and then applied to the hair for curls. . .I've seen some very old ones in fashion history books.

Thanks, J99!

Great question, jennifer!  You know I'm with you on the shoes.  Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin not even born yet... brrr! ;)  Seriously (???), I'd have big problems adjusting to 1795-- I don't even like to go camping if there's no place to plug in a blowdryer.

I have a question for the fashion history buffs.  How in those days DID they make the fabulous curls a la Millicent or Samantha?

Current Talk '02 I / Smileys

I don't know how those smileys got in there (my last post)  now I know it's late and I better get off this thing!

That has happened to me too, Cassandra.  It's because : and D are the code for the toothless smiley, so if they ever appear next to each other in your text (or any of the other smiley codes, for that matter) that's what'll show up.

Here's what you typed, and you can see for yourself that the smiley code is in there--
Code: [Select]
3:Donna Waldry,  2:Diana Milay,
You can click "modify" and insert spaces between each : and D, then "save", or just say the word and I'll fix it for you.

These are current prices quoted by the Anaheim Marriott concierge and are subject to change by summer:

Taxi - $65 to $75 one way, per cab, to or from LAX

Airport bus  - $16 one way for adults, $9 for children

Super Shuttle - $14 per person one way

LAX is 1 hour away by cab ride, but longer during rush hour (which, btw, is a misnomer; it lasts more like 2 to 3 hours).
The bus will of course take the longest since it makes frequent stops and can be full of passengers.
The Super Shuttle picks up near your baggage claim area.

Orange County Airport, on the other hand, is 30 minutes away by cab ride, also not counting rush hour.

Hope that helps!

ky, Midnte, since you brought up shoes, and are native, can I assume that I will shamefully have the most obscene amount there this year?

Hee hee, yes, I think it's your year!  But you might want to check over your shoulder for ThomJ.  Has anyone heard from him lately, btw, and whether he's coming to the Fest?

I'm a female and I do not find the word "chick" or "broad" the least bit offensive. . that's reading way too much into things. . .oh and I AM a Feminist.

It's her opinion and she acknowledged that it was.  If she doesn't like a term for women or anything else but wants to answer the question, I don't understand why she can't express that as politely as she did in her reply.  So please, let's respect each other despite our different opinions instead of making this an issue.

I've been wanting to cast my votes for the longest time.  But since VAM didn't set a deadline for voting and I'm somewhat caught up with board stuff this morning (I wish I could say the same for MB), here goes--

Best Actress - NANCY BARRETT
Best Actor - LOUIS EDMONDS
Best Supporting Actress - MARIE WALLACE
Best Supporting Actor - THAYER DAVID
Best Director - LELA SWIFT
Best Writer - VIOLET WELLES
Best Costume Design - FLORA COLLINS' COSTUMES, especially the resplendent red number (not the one on the MPI tape box, but fancier) paired with the ruby and diamond earrings; I'm seeing her in my mind descending the Collinwood stairway, so it must've been PT Flora, or does anyone know for sure?
Best Scene - Roger stops to announce "We'll be back!" before he and Liz, accompanied by Stokes, abandon the great house (and Liz bothered to turn out all the lights-- a nice touch), and as the camera pans the empty house, it comes alive with grammophone music and maniacal laughter, then rests on a certain self-satisfied ghost...

I wouldn't want to bring too much attention to myself either, so the 2nd thing I'd want to do, after changing clothes, (and this is my pet peeve about Vicki) would be to lose the 20th century hairstyle.

Of course, the dearth of attractive shoes would make me do whatever it took to get back to my own time ASAP!!!

Luciaphil's Idle Thoughts '02 / OT for Vlad

Somehow I was logged out, but I'm sure I didn't log out.  I'll try this post and see who it says it's by -- "Vlad" or "Vlad the Impaler"!

>:(

Vlad,

Switching boards shouldn't log you out.  What may have happened is that when MB updated the board recently, the option to "always stay logged in" was reset to its default setting, which is that the box became unchecked.  To always stay logged, you can go to the login/logout sections of the board and recheck it.  Whenever you use a library computer, though, I recommend that you manually log out when you're finished to avoid giving another computer user access to your account here.

Anytime that you find yourself logged out, you can regain access to the name "Vlad" by logging in with your password.  This insures that the name stays reserved for you and you alone.

BTW, "Winds of Eternity" is one of NancyE's books (collinsport@flash.net); unfortunately, she's not a member of dsboards.  There's an excerpt from it at http://collinwood.topcities.com/dsff000.html if you want to check it out.

I don't know if this will help, but on the SciFi website, while "The Uninvited" is listed under April 4, since each day on their Schedulebot starts and ends at 6 a.m., the way it's showing up (3 a.m. in the East and also via the West Coast feed) is that it's at the very bottom of their April 4 schedule.  But since clear-thinking people consider that a day begins and ends at 12 a.m., that's actually early in the morning on April 5.  So I'd recommend you check your schedule for 3 a.m. ET on Thursday nite/Friday morning instead of early Thursday morning.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you guys... It's a FANTASTIC movie!

BTW, no one's said anything about her bizarre death.  Last time I checked, strangling doesn't allow for last words  8)

Oh, I agree.  It seems they could've found a more plausible way to reveal a killer's identity-- even the tired dropped cufflink scenario that the writers use later was an improvement.

But Suki's last words don't bother me nearly as much as later in the series when victims utter their last words while being strangled.  Argh!

P.S.  Love your new custom title, btw.  I'm so impressed you solved MB's math problem! :D

I caught only a couple of the episodes shown on Monday, neither of which I'd seen before-- one was the first eposode, and the other was about a Valentine's Day killer and from the 2nd season.  So it seems they showed  a sampling of the 3 seasons, and I liked what I saw but have no idea what criteria they used to select them.

The Valentine's ep reminded me most of DS since Nick found he had to hide his love for the doc in order to save her from death.

If Mark Branson (fan fic writer extraordinaire) happens to read this thread, I'm sure he can tell you more about the series since he used to watch the show in earnest.
