I don't recall Sam even mentioning being in contact with Paul (unless I have a faulty memory). I suspect this is another DS example or rewriting history to fit the storyline.
They had contact when Sam did some sketches of Paul for a large portrait that the latter wanted done of himself. No worries-- he brought it up early on, during the less popular eps.
