I was reading news stories and happened across an LA Times article which announced that Dana Elcar died Monday, June 6, 2005 of complications from pneumonia Monday at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura.  The article can be viewed here.  It doesn't mention anything about his role on Dark Shadows.

He was always my favorite Sheriff Patterson.

P.S.  Please don't be surprised if I'm not about the forum for a few days.  Have out of towners coming and a college graduation to attend.

:'( Very sorry to hear this news. I had always hoped Dana would be able to attend a show, or have some interview on a DVD set. He was a great, working actor. His legacy is impressive. He will be missed by many.

I very said when I heard that earlier this morning.  He really did have an impressive and very long career - one of those actors you saw everywhere.  He was also a great addition to DS. You've got to give him a lot of credit for having the courage to continue to work after he was diagnosed with glaucoma.

Definitely sad news.  I thought Elcar defined the role of Sheriff P more incisively than the others who essayed the part.

Other roles in which I recall him were a small but expressive part in Adam at 6 A.M. (with Grayson Hall, too), and an exceptionally fine role in an episode of The Rockford Files in which he played opposite Dennis Patrick.

Very sad, indeed.  I always enjoyed his work on DS, particularly the way he pronounced 'expertly' when describing the calves as being "expertly drained."  That always stayed with me over the years.

And it was always a treat when he popped up on another show.

He might not have been one of the more heralded actors on DS, but he certainly left his mark on the show.

sad indeed.many actors on the show simply defined thier roles and mr.elcar was among them.like clarice blackburn a small but distinctive presense.

whenever sheriff paterson is due and one of the other actors shows up i'm always slightly disappointed. :(

That's a thread to another small piece; this too does not mention DS. Interesting about him running away from home at age 13.

I never knew that the  writers on MacIver wrote him as blind (is that correct?); I really didn't watch it (though my mom did).

I enjoyed him in "The Sting".

So Dana Elcar had the 'Robert Blake' connection too...like Angelique!!

I got a ShadowGram e-mail tonight about his death.  He was MY favorite Sheriff Patterson, as well.  So sad that as times goes by, more and more people die.  I loved how Dana Elcar's Sheriff Patterson would not take any guff from anybody and told it like it was.  He was nobody's fool.  He will be  missed.  [sadg]

I haven't seen a topic about this yet on the board but sad news..  Dana Elcar, who played Sheriff Patterson during early Dark Shadows passed away at age 77.  Always liked his character and thought his portrayal of the sheriff was the best.  I particularly liked his scenes with Roger, Sam & Burke.

The passing of another DS alumnus is always so sad.  Dana Elcar was great as George Patterson.  I find it a bit ironic that his passing came so closely to that of Anne Bancroft, whom I always viewed as the best possible pick to play Elizabeth Collins Stoddard in any remake - including the attempted WB version - of the show.

How weird Gerard - that thought crossed my mind the other day too!
