Current Talk '02 II / Re: Scion of a wealthy family

I agree with you, kuanyin.  It is hard to picture Liz dusting or mopping.   However, I remember the movie "Mommie Dearest".  It depicted a rich movie actress down on her knees scrubbing the floor with Dutch Cleanser wearing a full length velvet dressing gown.  This helps me picture Liz scrubbing the toilets in her gem studded hostess gowns.

Current Talk '02 II / Scion of a wealthy family
« on: October 01, 2002, 08:52:42 PM »
When Luciaphil wrote in her column "scion of a wealthy family" in reference to David,  I began to think about just how wealthy the Collins family really is.  They own a cannery in some village in Maine, hardly a wealthy state.  How much wealth could a small cannery produce?  The house itself is expensive to maintain so most of it is closed off.  They have one housekeeper.  They live very frugally even by Maine standards.  The land they own is coastal so it would be subject to high taxes.  I think the wealth is just enough to live comfortably and maintain appearaces.

I agree with you, Josette.  However,  I never believed in Amy's sweetness.  We are given very little backstory on this child.  I have always perceived her as manipulative.  She seemed to consistantly say exactly what adults want to hear even before being involved with ghosts.  She is oh so sweet and polite that it is unbelievable.  I have kids and I ain't buying this.

I am so glad Cassandra brought this up. If Barnabas can time travel why didn't he go back to Martinique and keep his pants zipped?  He could have gone back and saved his sister or his mother but Nooooo!  He saves some putz that went back of her own free will to a fate she knew would happen.  All this for a  woman who was in love with someone else.  I think all the other deaths just are not worth it . Josette, Sarah, Bathia, Naomi, Abigail, Trask, assorted street tarts. Did I leave anybody out?

I think they both kept their emotions bottled up for so long it was impossible to break down now.  In addition, Barnabas would not have risked his fathers life by uttering the phrase "I love you" which spoke volumes by being left unsaid.
I think Joshua believed he was being kind by putting his son to his final rest.  Unfortunately,  he may not have realized his son was not truly at peace.

I thought Old Spice sounded right for Barnabas but too cheap. How about Royal Copenhagen instead?
I can't wear perfume my husband(Mr. Romance) says it gives him a headache.

My favorite interrogation was between Andre and the Rev. Trask.  Andre says with utter contempt that he was being questioned under protest by a complete idiot.  Of course, I paraphrased the dialog.  I wished they had shown the entire  interrogation of Andre because it would have been a hoot.

Thank-you, Mark.  I second your comments about the cumulative time taken to load the logo.  The board is running slow and a little jerky for me, too.

Current Talk '02 II / Re: Caskets & Burials
« on: September 20, 2002, 07:56:56 PM »
At first, I thought it was weird that a waitress was hired as tutor until Robin mentioned she could have been a teacher without a teaching position.  I think the writers should have used that explaination.  My high school math teacher sold ties at an upscale dept. store every summer and at Christmas.  My son's first grade teacher is a catalog clerk at JC Penneys in the evenings. Teachers pay in Maine is very low.
Lucia, are you telling me it is illegal to bury someone at home?  I have a perfectly good root cellar in my home and I was hoping to save money by using it for that purpose.  I even told my husband a further savings could be found by using extra large lawn and leaf bag instead of a casket.

The ghost of Daphne also had the signature scent of lilacs.
My late mother-in-law always wore Paloma.  It was so strong that once during a long car ride I sneezed so much I ended up with a nosebleed.  My husband finally showed some guts and told her not to wear it anymore.

Maybe Julia was the only one in the house that didn't have a can of Moxie with dinner?

Isn't absinthe the ingredient for a New Orleans drink called Sazerac?

Current Talk '02 II / Re: Betsy's Vicki(aka The Icky Vicki)vs Amanda

I guess I view BD with more sympathy because she was trying to fill someone else's shoes.  I did not like her as a replacement but as an actress maybe she just needed more experience.  On the other hand, I find Amanda as annoying as Hallie.  Were the characters Hallie and Amanda written to be irritating or was it just the actors portrayal that added that misfortunate aspect?

Current Talk '02 II / Moxie
« on: September 19, 2002, 09:49:02 PM »
Moxie is a soft drink created by Dr. Augustin Thompson of Union, ME in 1884.  It was used to cure such ills as "loss of manhood" and " paralysis and softening of the brain".
The first time my husband and I tried it we were unaware of its effects.  We spent a sleepless night whirlling like tops in our bed.  Everytime I see Joe Haskell now I think of my first can(and last) of Moxie.
If anyone is interested in Moxie and its mind altering effects I found this link www.moxieworld.com

You were so lucky to get white go-go boots, kuanyin.  I wanted a pair so much but my mom always said no yet she bought me those hideous yellow mary-janes that I only wore once at Easter.  Thankfully, they were given to the Salvation Army which is probably where Amy's green ones went.
