Thanks for the reccomendation, I found a copy at Borders. Worth getting, I used to read Scary Monsters regularly, it has the feel of very early Famous Monsters issues, its very fanzine-ish in many ways, say how some of the photos are more blurred than others, but its a very sincerely presented magazine and they have a great love for their subject. Haven't finished all the articles yet, but enjoyed what I read of the David Selby interview.
I was also happy an article on a show in Chesapeake Va that some aquaintances, Clayton and Rob hosted. Anyone on the coastal VA or NC area is invited to this year's show!

Julia: No, no, no, first they cancel "The Nurses", and now "Never Too Young"! If they change Dr. Brewer on "General Hospital" again, my life is overrrrr. ehhhheuuhhh (sobs uncontrolably)

Julia: Carolyn, are you going to teach me the rest of the steps to the Watusi or not? I'm losing my patience and my rhythm!

Barnabas: Okay Carolyn, I give up. What are you wearing under that coat?
carolyn: Chanel # 5...

Tony: (in Bogart voice) Don't keep bawlin' like that, we'll always have Portland.

Prof Stokes: No Adam, when I asked you to "come out of the closet" I meant that quite literally, not in the metaphoric sense.

Sam: Vickie, that usually doesn't happen to me. Julia says if I go forward through time with her, she can write me a prescription for Cialis or Viagra.
Vickie: I don't understand...

Nicholas: I can assure you, Miss Winters, in all my years of hosting "Jeopardy", we have only had ONE category on the Etruscans.
Vicki: What about a category on sleeveless fashions?

Current Talk '05 I / Re: Favorite Dark Shadows special effect
« on: June 30, 2005, 10:35:06 PM »
Some of my favorite effects were among the most simple. The show made good use of people simply fading away, such as Barnabas escaping Trask or Tom Jennings ghost evaporating into the sunrise. Basically just phasing on the bluescreen. Actually, one of my favorite bits, they did a couple pf times with Angelique as well as with Beth's ghost  [ghost] was simply having someone fade in without the bluescreen by just having them in a blacked out area then soft green lspotlight bringing the character in. It feels supernatural.

One other cool and creepy use of blue/split screen was the Romeo and Juliet like corpses in the 1841 PT story.

One of the worst effects was having Audrey's presence sort of disappear when Barnabas wakes from his Leviathan induced dream and Marsha Mason's arm is still sticking out from behind the Old House curtains!

What should one make of the fact that President James Monroe appears to be buried in a CAGE?  [batang]
(That was the next picture on the site.)

Actually I'm not sure why President Monroe has such a large structure, except that he was an early President, fifth actually, and he was one of the early interrments. I think it was probably a promotion for the cememtery when it was new, kind of, spend eternity with a founding father. However, nearby is President Tyler, who was burried here due to fear the Union would disturb his remains as he was a supporter of the South and the Union had threatened to burn and destroy his estate, which was outside Richmond along the James River. When you visit his home, they show you the gravesite he had planned to use before the war. Now you may be surprised to think the soldiers would actually disturb graves, but in Savannah Georgia, there is an old cemetery where Sherman's soldiers, who were occupying the town, actually moved the headstones to the wall so they could camp there. As a matter of fact, the stone marker for Button Gwinnett, signer of the Declaration now states, he is burried "in the general area." Mausoleums on the site in Savannah were prized as tempoary campsites, and there were problems with soldiers cooking in them! [firedevil]

As for Poole, I still haven;t found any direct connection to anything bizarre he did while alive, but his bones were stolen from his tomb at least once and found "reaaranged" elsewhere on the grounds of Hollywood. The most frequent ghosts reported on the site are Confederate dead, which isn't unusual considering the thousands in the mass grave section near General Pickett. [ghosty]

Hello Jeffrey,
       I found a nice photo of Poole's gravesite/mausoleum      [blackbat]

http://www.sendcoffee.com/richmond/tours/2wwpool.html   [grim]

So much of Richmond haunts, like all the other tours I've been on, have legend and facts all mixed up. The only thing I remember is asking about him to a alocal pagan group and they got very quiet and nervous when I asked. I suspect he like many people of the 19th century may have been known to dabble in spiritualism. When I find out more I'll let you know.

Anyone coming to Richmond, let me know, I can give you tips on great spooky places, including the one house I KNOW is haunted. That house convinced me there are ghosts.  [ghosty] [ghosty] [ghosty]

I like Suspiria in spite of itself, but its not a film I love.  I think its strength was in its casting and most performances (many people are obviously dubbed), the pacing, mood, cinematography, music and atmosphere. I think the story telegraphs the mystery so quickly you can't even use a stop watch. I tend to agree and wife does even moreso that this and other Italian horror films can have a very ugly undercurrent of violence against women. The violence is stylised, and in this films its generally women against women, which is about the step above the average Jess Franco potboiler of outright misogyny. I attended a panel on "Women Look at Horror Films" at FANEX a few years back and all of the ladies who had seen the film were uncomfortable with it on some level or another. Actually, my wife has never made it through the whole thing, especially as she took ballet, the central setting of the piece.
Agreed that you don't go to this to see very much Joan Bennett screen time, although I admit she and Alida Valli ( of the classic "Third Man", who's very creepy here) add a veneer of class to the bloodflow.
