Title: Relatives that make fun of you
Post by: jennifer on December 10, 2002, 09:31:05 AM
seeing Connie's daughter made me think that i have to practically come to the board with a blanket over the computer hiding the fact that i'm on my "weird DS site again" My whole family just laughs at the fact that i still love and watch the show and my daughter threatens to tell my mother that i come to this site to discuss
the show Does anyone else have this problem?????

jennifer
and ConnIe do you have any story boards with that dreamboat Tim Shaw? I  asked first Steve!

Oh my mom thinks the show is totally weird.  Her best friend when she was growing up would refuse to play with her right after school.  She would run off the bus saying "I can't miss Dark Shadows today, he's gonna bite somebody!"  SO I guess that kind of made her hate it.  Then she married my dad and found out he was a fan!  LOL.

No, you are not alone. My husband & daughter think I'm weird for investing so much time watching the show & then getting online to check the DS sites.  I tell them that it keeps me sane and if mom is happy then everyone benefits.

Thankfully I don't have this problem because my whole family watches it with me!  My parents who are 79 & 81 love the show just as much as I do.  And now that the show has been pre-empted for these three weeks there's not a day goes by where my Dad doesn't ask me to go upstairs and bring down an MPI tape! (They live downstairs from me)

Whenever any one of my three sisters come to visit from out of state they sit and watch it with us too! (although I can't say how much their husbands enjoy it)

My 19 year old daughter will sit and watch it with me once in awhile when she's not working.  As for my 16 year old, Im lucky enough if I can get her to sit down to eat let alone watch a TV show.(I wish I had her energy!)

Whenever my husband goes past the study door (from which you can see whatever is on the computer screen) he calls out "You're Addicted!!" and keeps going.

I do the same thing when I catch him playing "Snood" while he's waiting for something to download. ::)

Funny that all of our lives are in ways like each others.  My family puts up with my addition.  My husband humors me with the DS thing.  Every once in awhile he will ask a question about the show while I am watching as he passes by.  My two younger children were fans for awhile but lately they aren't as interested.   My oldest, 20 year old son, laughs and says it is scary how many tapes I have squirreled away in the closet in the playroom.  MY  nineteen year old just ignores it most of the time.  I think they are very grateful we have more than one TV and VCR. When I am visiting here someone is always hanging over my shoulder asking how long I am going to be. My mother doesn't get the whole DS thing.  Right now I am on her good side so she listens and pretends to care.  I have noticed when I start talking about DS she starts talking about her favorite show NYPD Blue.  If I bore her with my show , she can do the same with hers.  Revenge is sweet.

Friends, some of them know I am a little off the wall with the DS thing.  Because they love me they snicker behind my back instead of to my face.  There are people who I would never let on to.

Snood is played all the time on this computer too.

In totally agreement here, When Mom is happy everyone is happy. Yes, they do laugh at me.

I too am the one in the family that you look at twice.  My husband has that 'oh...that again' and my daughter, who loves the show, but not a much  as I do.  Even my Aunt.  When we sent out Christmas cards last year, the return label was ones of Barnabas and the words Dark Shadows.  My Aunt goes around telling everybody that I am in a cult.  So I send her my daughters graduation announcement, her picture, things like that.  Bugs her to no end.  My mother just laugh and says that's her sister and just don't say anything.  And I don't.....but...I send her alot of things.

All it took was for Peg to see David Selby for the first time for her to no longer think it was weird to sit and watch DS till all hours. The first time we made a project of sitting through all the episodes several years ago, she couldn't get enough of it. I'd be the one having to tell her, "Okay, that's enough for today."

Whenever Quentin was in peril and the suspense was killing Peg, it was a dangerous thing to try separating her from the TV.

At first I kind of hesitated (a little) to tell people outside my immediate circle (you know, the ones who already KNOW you're crazy but accepted it long, long ago) that I had resurrected my love for the show after many a long year.  But now I get a kick out of bringing DS up whenever I have the chance and to just about any and everyone (tee hee).  What really seems to turn their heads sideways is when I tell them I have the entire 5 year series on video tape stashed behind my armoire...and I'm working on buying the DVD's.  I don't know why really, but the older I get the more I get an almost wicked pleasure out of being perceived as eccentric or strange.  [nuts]

On the flip side of that, it can be really fun to run into a fellow fan by pure accident.  This Thanksgiving I was at one of my cousin's houses who had recently re-married.  I had only been introduced to her him prior to this and hadn't had a chance to talk to him until that day.  At some point, we started talking about travel, which led him to reminisce about a trip he had taken several years ago to Romania just to see the "real Dracula's" castle (opposed to the tourist trap fake out which apparently exists there). Later I discovered he also had this really great collection of those plastic models of classic horror characters from his childhood. Of course, all of this led me to eventually discover that he was also a DS fan (didn't he just have to be!).  It was as if I'd been in a foreign country and this was the first English speaking person I'd found in five years!  [hello]

I may have related this before, but the most unusual discovery of an "unexpected" DS fan happened after gathering with Bobubas and several other DS fans a couple of years ago in New York. At the time, I was head sysop on the Air Warrior online combat sim, and one of the other staff members lived nearby, so he offered to meet me and take me to the airport after Bob's event was finished. When we got together, there were still a few hours before my flight left, so he said he knew of a bar where we could go for a few drinks first.

Bar turns out to be a strip club. We're having some drinks, and as the strippers come out, lo and behold my friend Wayne stands up and yells "Famous writer here! Famous writer here!" In horror, I kinda slunk under the table, but by then two of the strippers came over to see what the ruckus was about. When they found out I'd written a DARK SHADOWS novel, excitement ranneth over, for they were both knocked-out, diehard DS fans from way back. One of them started on about Barnabas and Quentin, and her favorite episodes, etc. Since I had a couple of copies of DREAMS OF THE DARK along in case of an emergency, I ended up giving them the copies in exchange for a few drinks.

The other girl, however, was a bit wary, figuring just anyone might come in claiming to be writer. Never minding a bit, since my friend Wayne was the one doing all the claiming, I produced my driver's license and let her compare it to the name on the book. "So you've got the same name as the writer. Big deal," she says.

"Writers go to strip clubs too, you know," says Wayne.

"It's real cost-effective for me to have a bunch of copies of some guy's book because we have the same name," I says. "But if you don't want the book, you don't have to keep it."

"Oh, no," she says. "I'll take the book. I loved DARK SHADOWS. And there's always a chance you're the real guy."

After that, the first girl made a couple of offers I sort of had to refuse, and I came out of there two books poorer and quite a few shots drunker.

Never know whom you're going to meet.

Uh-huh. My children, who usually try to call me while I'm visiting the boards, will invariably inquire if I'm "on with the gothics again?" Funny thing is that it was they who first discovered DS-----------and got me hooked. It seems they conveniently forget THAT.

Neither my husband nor son like DARK SHADOWS at all, and Brad, my 19-year-old wild child, will, on occasion, yell out, "BARNABAS!" for no reason at all.  I assume he's trying to piss me off, but it just makes me laugh.

Since I hit my forties, I don't really give a crap what people think of my likes and dislikes, so I freely admit my passion for our show.  I didn't always; I was too self-conscious.  If people look askance at me, they can go to hell.

It's great being a grown-up!

Love, Robin

PS - Mark, I really enjoyed your little stripper club story, and as for the photo that followed--sick, wonderful, sick!

Oh, my family thinks my DS obsession is for the birds, but they do their best to ignore it.  My Dad thinks it's kind of cute, but my Mom has hated DS since the Sixties.  They came up to Boston for a visit and were shocked by my Avengers collection--thankfully they never saw the DS tapes!  My sister is basically oblivious to all of it, although Cassandra gave her nightmares in the Sixties, so she does vaguely recall it.  I watch it sometimes when I'm at home and Sci Fi runs it, especially if it is a good Grayson or Thayer show.  They have to put up with it then.

I'm still waiting for a storyboard featuring Tim Shaw, the most luscious male of Collinwood in my book.  How about fitting him in somewhere below or on top of Quentin on "98 bottles of beer on the wall"?  Yeah, Tim helps his old buddy Quentin out.  That's the ticket.

Just trying to see how sick we can make this topic,

Gothick

Well I have to chime in on this one.  Being a 40ish woman I have been a fan since 1st run days.
When  we had it rerun here in the 80's my daughter was in grade school 3-4th grade and she would watch with me. But the station dropped it and I didn't discover it again until the Scifi channel. My daughter is now grown and married and thinks I am obsessed and weird but doesn't hold it against me.
My husband (#2) is really great.  He never heard of it before the SciFi channel started showing them.  He watched the entire run with me and even walks around the house occasionally saying EVILLLLL like Trask. He humored me and took me to the LA 2002 Fest and we had a blast. I have started to collect the DVDs have 1-3 Preorded 4-6 and he doesn't bat an eye.
My old school (grade/high school) girlfriends used to watch the show too and think I am not too far gone, just a bit nutz.
My mother on the other hand thinks I am total weird. But what does she know she hated Batman TV show, Lost in Space and all of the Star Treks. It is hard to believe we are related!
One more story... my podiatrist found out I went to the fest and told me he was a fan when he was a kid.  He made me promise to bring in the fest book the next time I have to see him.

This really tickled me!  That's the attitude most of my friends seem to take with my DS infatuation.  However, sometimes I've gotten a little validation.

My hubby and I threw a party a couple years back, right after we moved in together.  We had the movie Barbarella running continuously (with the sound turned off) on the tv in the living room as wallpaper.  In our bedroom, I did the same thing with Dark Shadows.  Towards the end of the party, I went into the bedroom and several guests were there watching the tape (some 1897 eps.) Turns out several of our guests were closet DS fans, and we laughed and talked about the show for the rest of the party.

My husband teases me about some of the more melodramatic aspects of the show; he loves Grayson, and thinks Angelique is a hoot, but doesn't really watch with me.  But last Christmas, he gave me a copy of the Dark Shadows Companion as a gift.  The accompanying gift tag said it was from 'the Collins family.'

When I was very young (6 or 7) and the show was in its original run, I used to try to watch Dark Shadows at my Grandma's house, where I went after school each day.  Though it creeped me out, I was intrigued by the show.  But it scared the hell out of my slightly younger cousin, who would let out a scream every time she saw Barnabas' face!  Gram would then yell at me about trying to watch that scary show.  Guess DS has just been in my blood for a very long time!

My family thinks I'm weird no matter what and that my love of Dark Shadows is just one more manifestation.  And while my husband thinks my whole classic TV addiction is weird, guess who he calls when he and his co workers or drinking buddies has a TV trivia question?

Actually I don't think that "THE PICTURE" is Mark's new book cover.  I think it's a photo from KLS's new book, "The Bunny Years-A DS Fandom Retrospective"!

I remember quite well when I found DS again. It was just a couple of weeks before its run on SciFi ended last time. I was SO excited, I was just happily gushing on and on to my husband. He managed to act bored enough long enough to shut me up. This from the man who I once waited for the commercial to come on so I could actually tell him something (other than about DS). He yelled at me, because he was trying to listen to it!

Did I mention that I'm divorced?

My kids like it, though they don't usually watch with me anymore. I love the soap opera discussions that arise when they do and I am explaining, "OK, Quentin is EVIL now, it isn't until later that he is nice." Or with the DVDS, "Remember, Barnabus was really a bad guy then!" They nod and take it all in, they are too young to think I'm weird for it and it all makes sense to them....

After DS 1991 ended I watched it repeatedly over the summer. I was CRUSHED when it didn't return. I guess like a lot of original fans were back in '71.  I was 14 at the time and my mom and dad made me quit watching for about a month.  They thought I was getting obsessed!! LOL  Maybe I was as I have been a part of fandom for 17 years now.  When I used to chat back and forth with Kathleen Resch when were working on my zine my aunt was convinced she was a witch and going to ruin me.  OH BROTHER! My aunt is about like Trask though  [ghost_wacko].  I actually got two of my dearest friends into DS and they still are loving the show all these years later.  MY brother liked it a lot but not crazy about it like I am.  His significant other hates it though and just amuses me when I am around them and talking DS.  She says it looks like someone pointed a home movie camera at the actors and taped it. I of course had to explain to her that  it was like a videotaped stage play and that they couldnt stop filiming no matter what. So yes my family thought I was crazy and my aunt obviously thought I was going down the rosie road to hell.  She still does me being gay and all. [ghost_sad]  I do identify with others on this board though.  I quit carrying what people thought about me years AGO.  What a freeing experience that was. And I loved the eccentric title bestowed upon me as well.  Hell I don't care if someone calls me weird it doesn't bother me in least.[ghost_smiley] [ghost_grin]

My mother is perfectly fine with it, as she grew up on the show. My grandparents, on the other hand, oh, dear. XD My grandfather is pretty passive on the subject, but my grandmother has at some point become brainwashed to think that supernatural = Satanic. She's told my mother that we shouldn't watch DS, and she's made the ridiculous claim that had she known "what DS was about," she would have restricted it from being watched. She's even said negative things about The Wizard of Oz a few times. Go figure.

My uncle watched DS with my mother, and now he seems somewhat embarrassed about it for whatever reason. Probably doesn't want my cousins, who give him enough lip as is, the fodder of the fact that he watched a soap as a kid or something. Who knows?

My best friend from when I was a kid got me into Freemasonry. This is the same person that would rush home with me to watch DS. We would go to each others house to watch. Anyway when you first join there's some memory work that you have to do and you are given a coach to help you learn it.  My coach's last name was Collins. When I told my best friend who my coach was he said "Please don't say anything about Dark Shadows until after you're in." I said that was cool, I wouldn't.

Well my coach's first name was Bill. So I arrive at his house the next day and as I pass his mail box I see "B. Collins" and just below his name is "Collinwood" [ghost_smiley]. I smile, go to his door and knock, and after saying "hello" I ask "why does it say Collinwood on your mail box" he laughs and starts to tell me about the show. Well, most of the time I'm out I have my cane with me, so I tell him that I have to run out to my truck to get something. I walk back into the house and his eyes get as big as plates. The last time he had seen the show was its original run, but he knew the cane as soon as he saw it. He called his wife to come into the room where we were. Turns out she's just as big as fan.

The next day I came I brought the music box and ring. They now have copies of all of the shows. When I got the DVDs they got tapes.  That was about three years and to this day they both call me Barnabas.

So while there are those that don't understand, I proudly fly my Dark Shadows freak flag.

My older sister used to make fun of me for watching DS when I was a little sister. In particular she used to make that face that Julia makes quite frequently where she looks slightly surprised-- her eyesbrows are up and her mouth is sort of rounded. I'm sure you would know it when you see it.
