Today in Soap Opera History (August 10) (http://www.welovesoaps.net/2015/08/today-in-soap-opera-history-august-10.html#more)

1967: On Dark Shadows, Maggie (Kathryn Leigh Scott) returned to the Blue Whale Café -- and ran into her former tormentor, Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid).

Who knew it was the "Blue Whale Café"?

 [ghost_huh]  Well, I guess now it's canon.  [ghost_tongue]

in a few early episodes the characters went there for "dinner"...

I'm imagining seaside casual dining. fried clams. "surf 'n turf" and so forth.

the "bangor pine" was for dressier, more momentous occasions. the diner for burnt coffee and donuts (served three on a plate) for "breakfast".

I was thinking about how much of DS and its characters are centered around the Blue Whale, especially in the beginning of the series. I don't know of any other soap that can make this claim to fame. Think about it.

The Ryan family on Ryan's Hope ran a pub in NYC. Most of the family worked or helped out in the pub.

I know. I'm still around. I used to do all of my posting at work, but I can't get access there.

OK. Of the soaps watched in the olden days by my family, As the World Turns, Search for Tomorrow, The Secret Storm... I couldn't think of a one that featured a dive for plot development. Collinwood is definately the center of the universe, but when you need to hash things out, it's the Blue Whale, baby.

Sadly, more and more workplaces are blocking the Internet. I suppose they think employees should only work when they're on the job. What a foolish concept!!  [nodassent]

Mine did too. Of course, it was the guys in data processing who had their computers confiscated for things far less benign than posting on a Dark Shadows board. [ghost_shocked] [ghost_shocked]
