Title: Shilling Shockers at Collinwood!
Post by: PennyDreadful on December 05, 2005, 07:10:48 PM
We are almost ready to wrap production on Season One of Penny Dreadful's Shilling Shockers, my new "horror host" series which will be airing on various cable access markets starting this Winter.  We'll be showing lots of classic (and not-so-classic) horror flicks and with spooky wacky bits in between.  Since I live in New England, I am taking full advantage of all the various spooky locations in this neck of the woods.  I thought this one might be of particular interest to those on the DS forums!   [santa_smiley]

This ep is called "Drunk Shadows" and is rife with DS references and jokes...and we did it all without naming any characters or places (so no one will sue us - I hope!)

Yes indeed!  It was pretty darned cold that day too.  These are actually from that afternoon's taping.  These came out kind of blurry because we were moving and it was windy.  The premise of the episode is that we go visit my relatives up in Collinwood (which almost gets named...I get cut off as I say "Collin.." and my co-host says "Would you like..etc).  We refer to "Cousin Barny" etc.  Anyway,  we tick off my relatives who throw us out of the house, so we go to the "local tavern and get potted" while complaining about our various relatives.  The movie being shown for this ep is "The Terror" starring Boris Karloff and a young Jack Nicholson.

I'll post when the show debuts and will also offer a couple of tapes or DVDs when I have them.

Hi Patti,

So far we will be aired in Boston MA, New Bedford MA, Acushnet MA, Fairhaven MA, New Haven CT, Middleboro & Lakeville MA, Providence RI (if all goes well) and hopefully in other markets around the country.  We are just getting started, but we plan on self-syndicating the show through "sponsors" who can put us on in their local Cable Access markets for free.  Lots of horror-hosts self-syndicate their shows with help from sponsors who want the show on cable access in their area.

Once the 'Shilling Shockers' website launches there'll be more info about where we are being aired and how to be a sponsor.

Another pic: My husband Garou gets a haircut from Peter Cushi...er... I mean from my Grandfather!

Hey Penny Dreadful, just now caught up with these pictures.  Now that's what I call SPOOK-tacular!  You guys did a fabulous job.  I love the cute werewolf makeup, (and Garou is a hysterical name!), and your Witch costume is to die for (literally! hahaha!) and what better location than Collinwood for such an adventure?

I think it's hysterical that you chose The Terror, too, since they filmed it in three days on leftover sets and it definitely has a Drunk (?) Shadows feel to it!  Nicholson's nasal, uninflected attempt at a performance could even be seen as an inspiration for the thespian (?) technique of Craig Slocum!

Best wishes for your project.  I don't have cable, so unfortunately I won't be able to tune in, but maybe I'll get to see a clip or more shots on your website.

All the best! Keep up the great work!

Steve

Thanks for the thumbs up on the pics!

Gothick, I have a soft spot for the Terror.  I can't help but enjoy Boris Karloff in his castle by the sea, although the plot in the film is sorely lacking to be certain!  We do actually mention the crazy three-day shooting schedule during one of the hosting segments!

The Drunk part of Drunk Shadows commences at our stand-in for "The Blue Whale" where me, Garou and Dr. Von Bulow have some pseudo-besotted fun!

By the by, I have a minute and a half clip from the first segment of the show which I plan to send to Stuart at collinwood.net in case he wants to put it up on his site.  We are still working on the 'Shilling Shockers' website, but once it's up I hope to host a couple of clips there.  Also, if MB, Midnite and Dom have the space to put up the clip on the boards, I'd be happy to send it here as well!

It'll be on BNN in Boston - http://www.bnntv.org/

Also, that clip may not be the final edit.  We got very few closeups since we were worried about getting in trouble for being there in the first place.  We did the three-shot and a couple of brief zoom-ins.  In retrospect I wish we had risked doing more closeups so shot isn't as static.  Still, I can console myself with the cool factor of having the Carey Mansion as an awesome backdrop.

Here it is - and it's wonderful.  [santa_thumb]

To watch the video, simply click on the play button and wait for the file to buffer completely. If your connection speed is slow, it could take 20 minutes or more because the file is 3.49MB - though for most people it shouldn't take even a quarter of that time.

Thanks for the kind words on the clip.  Midnite, the shoes can't be seen there but they are pretty cool.  I picked them up during a trip to Germany several years ago.  They are very pointy, black ankle-high boots with silver buckles along the side.

Dang it...I can't get this to play for me. I have no idea why...  I'm operating off a Mac,  tried this on Netscape, Firefox, Safari..and IE (which I never use anymore, so don't whip me too hard). I keep getting the error message: "Cannot open the file. Verify that the path and filename are correct and try again."   [santa_cry]

Anyway--just wanted to say good job anyway PennyDreadful...if the rest say its great, it must be fantastic! I wish I lived in your neck of the woods so I could see your show.  [santa_kiss]

That's most probably the problem because the video is in the Windows wmv format. But *maybe* I can figure something out for Mac people...

It just struck me as odd at first because I have windows media player... But I know what you mean, if its formatted for windows...

That's okay - don't worry about it.  :-*  It just hasn't been my week for doing anything on the web, it seems.

And now, ironically enough, back to my web project (finals season). ;)

P.S. My apologies for bringing this up here and not on the Testing Board...

Hmmm - then the video should be playing, even on a Mac.  [hdscrt]

No problem. In fact, because so few people routinely read the Testing board (and shame on those of you who don't  :forshame:), mentioning your situation here in this topic might actually alert more Mac users to a possible problem.

Hmmm - then the video should be playing, even on a Mac.

Well MB, I don't have a definite answer as to what the problem is (sometimes I think its because I need to do a systemwide upgrade one day soon...certain programs aren't always compatable or run up to par unless you have one of the more recent Mac systems, or at least in my case [ie, I currently have Mac OSX version 10.28...the latest is Mac OSX 10.4, dubbed "Tiger"]. But I have the most up to date version of the Windows Media Player for the Mac, so...I dunno.  [santa_undecided]
And come to think of it, I've had this problem before on other sites. The only solution was to download it to my hard drive first (if said video was downloadable), and then it would play okay, usually...

Oh wait a second...it could also be a firewall issue. I've had problems playing and/or downloading certain files when the firewall was on full force, so to speak. I know its not a virus problem; I run system checks every time I log on to the computer.
Well, if all else fails, my computer is having another p.m.s. attack, and i need to download some more chocolate.dat files into my hard drive, stat...[just kidding!]

Whew...in a round about way, I think I may have just answered my own question. Sorry for rambling...Sigh. lol

I loved the smiley you used just then...lol. And yes, people who don't read the testing board should be whipped with something long strong and silver during a full moon!  [santa_evil]

Jennifer, I'm not sure if you can catch BNN on DirectTV.  I'll ask them about it.

My friend Rebecca, who is the show's main editor, showed me the other three segments from the episode.  She did a bangup job with the editing!  The second segment features a  faux DS-related "cameo" appearance.

We are working on the PDSS website which I hope to have up within the next month or so.  I'll definitely include a link the the DSBoards there, and we will probably have some clips up too.

Oh, and yeah, Garou is one sexy, hairy dude!  As for Dr. von Bulow, he majorly needs a chill pill!

Loved the segment from "Drunk Shadows" with that "special guest"!  Hee Hee!
