Very climatic episode.
It looks like the sheriff is going to finish off Barnabas, until an unexpected appearance from Carrie distracts the sheriff enough for Barnabas to take care of his attacker.
Julia is devastated as she waits with Gerard, knowing what she has done. They both seem surprised when Barnabas shows up unscathed. Barnabas finally figured out that Julia betrayed him and he takes it better than he usually does. He also decides that they must hold a seance to contact Carolyn and find out what the bloody hell she was talking about. Julia and Eliot are opposed to the idea, for somewhat different reasons. Carolyn speaks through Julia but does nothing but repeat the list of clues. Something happens. When the lights come back on, Eliot is dead. (Thanks, Barnabas). And Julia is missing.
Barnabas somehow managed to track Julia to the playroom, where Gerard is encouraging her to kill herself. Barnabas is able to get through to her. She puts down the dagger. But Gerard doesn't accept defeat. He does...well, something and Julia appears to be dying. He decides that it might be a good idea to head for the hills and he and a possibly dying Julia head off for Angelique's room. Julia is maybe on her last legs and may not make it. Barnabas appeals to Carrie who somehow shows them a door to a staircase that has not been seen before. Barnabas and Julia slowly make it down the stairs and find themselves face to face with who appears to be Carrie. Behold. Cody speaks!
This episode probably defines the relationship between Barnabas and Julia better than any other. He does love and care for her. But he is not in love with her.
I am somewhat mystified by Carrie's actions in this episode. She is actually able to defy Gerard twice in a short period of time, which Daphne was unable to do. She not only points the way to the exit; she makes a doorway to it conveniently appear. Carrie appears to have more power (or more motivation) than either Daphne or David/Tad.
