Sorry, Connie. My condolences go out to you and your family.
Thanks people.
In an effort to get into some DS silliness and distract myself from family turmoil for awhile, here's the lowdown on the fateful phone call. LOL
My friend Susan was sleeping over that night. Guess we were bored. It helps if you remember the character Lily Tomlin used to do on the show Laugh-In. Remember 'Ernestine the Telephone Operator' ?
Well, Susan could do a better imitation than I could so SHE did the talking (plus I was chicken). My big role was holding the microphone to the earpiece of the phone. (wow)
Anyway, Grayson answered (!). We half expected Sam or her son to answer. We were so excited we were shaking! Grayson on the phone!!!
Here's how the call went. (It's short, but WONDERFUL) LOL (At least it was to US!)
Grayson: Hello?
Susan: A gracious good evening. Have I reached the party to whom I am speaking? A Mrs. Grayson Hall?
Grayson: Yes?
Susan: This is Miss Tomlin from the phone company and according to our records, you have an overdue balance of sixty-four dollars and twenty-three cents. When may we expect payment?
Grayson: (In an EXTREMELY leery tone) You are WHO?
Susan: Miss Tomlin...from the phone...(Grayson interrupted)
Grayson: That is not POSSIBLE, we do not OWE any balance, and this is full of SHIT!!
(CLICK!)
WELL!
Needless to say, we were ROFL and absolutely thrilled! She sounded just like Julia! (duh - jeez, I can't imagine why).
We must have stayed up half the night re-playing the tape over and over and over. We actually had Julia Hoffman on the phone telling us we were full of shit!
Ah....those were the days.
A little aside: We also called Addison Powell that night. He was pretty much the only other person who's number was listed in the phone book and it hadn't been changed. We didn't do a nutty call - we just talked to him normally for a couple of minutes. He was SO nice, and SO friendly. We told him how much we liked him and the show, and he was unbelievably gracious and seemed really happy to talk! He thanked us for calling and was truly appreciative.
So there you are. My true confessions. Maybe I'll have to go incognito from now on. LOL
