Title: OT-Luciaphil, M.L.S.
Post by: Luciaphile on December 14, 2002, 01:35:33 AM
I wasn't going to mention this at all, but Raineypark has instructed me not to be so modest.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that I have completed my coursework in library science and am now an official, honest-to-goodness, genuine librarian [blshy]

Soon I hope to be an official, honest-to-goodness, genuine employed librarian 8-)

Luciaphil, let me be the first to congratulate you on a job well done!!!  Pat yourself on the back several times, and have a cocktail for good measure, if that's your bag, baby!  A friend of mine went through the M.L.S. program in the early 90's and I know it was rough!!!

KUDOS AND CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

And best of luck in finding a job, I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

Dear Luciaphil,
Have you considered being a high school librarian (media specialist).  There is a great demand for certified librarians, and if your degee is high enough, the money ain't bad.  I did it for almost twenty years, and my masters in in librarianship, and then  took my last degree in Instructional Technology.  I love working with the little children and the high schoolers.  Think about it if you have trouble in the public domain.  I am a certified teacher also, that used to be a requirement for librarians in public school in Georgia, and it does help if you are in elementary, because you do teach a lot, and there is so much technology to learn and to teach. Anyway, best wishes! I know it was tough.

Even if I was good with and enjoyed being with the little darlings, that ship has sailed. I don't have the coursework necessary to be certified as a SLMS--I'm going the academic route :)

Thanks for the congrats!

Hey...Congratulations!  [thumb]

When you say you're going the "academic route", what does that mean?  You want to work in a university library?  (I know nothing about library science).

Admiringly,
-CLC

PS  I'd like to put a book on reserve.
Ha ha hee hee
Oh God, how corny.

Congratz, Luciaphil. Employed or not, you've got a nice credential that ought to help pave the way. Best of luck! And I hope you're over your bug. If so, may I borrow it? I'm trying to write about one for a new antho.

A bug, that is. ;)

Congratulations, Luciaphil!  Welcome to a wonderful profession. And if you should decide to change your mind and go the public library route, LAPL has just been granted a job unfreeze and will be trying to fill a whole bunch of vacant positions. All you have to do is be willing to move all the way across the country!  ;)

Bette   [sssh]

Just kidding. We hardly ever do that anymore. :)

Great Going Luciaphil!!
Maybe you can help me.  I got a library book out a couple of months ago...the thing is, I forgot to bring it back.  The question is...when I take it back, can I just 'mention' your name?  It would be like I know you.  What do you say?

Congrats, Luciaphil.   Here is a library story.  I went into the library for a library card but did not check out any books.  I got an overdue notice a week later.  The books were all childrens books.  I told them I did not check out any books.  They said they would look into it but would not issue me a new card.  A month later, I got another overdue notice but for different childrens books.  I went into the library to ask for a new card and again was told they did not do this.  Just then, the head librarian walked by and asked what was going on.  The librarian told the head librarian that I wanted a new card.   He gave her a withering glance and said issue the lady a new card.  Luciaphil, learn the art of the withering glance and you will get all that you want in this life(either that or a new library card).

Yep, you got it. I want to work in a college library. I could do public, but I really like the academic environment so that's what I'm pursuing.

Congratulations, Luciaphil!

It truly is a wonderful profession and I wish you all the best on landing a library position that suits you.  Before I completed my library degree, I worked as a library assistant at Harvard and loved being in an academic environment.  I am not surprised that you want to go that route yourself.  Are you looking for a public or a technical services job?

And what is it with librarians and Dark Shadows anyway?  I know - exquisite taste!  [thumb]

Congratulations, dear lady!  I am so proud for you.  Perhaps some day I shall consider following in your estimable footsteps and have a chance at freeing myself from Library Assistant hell.

Best of luck with the job search!

And in case I don't get to say it ... Happy Holidays!

Library Assistant hell.
xo  Gothick

Oh, say it isn't so, Gothick!  I guess it all depends of the people you work with and the type of work you do, and I must have been very lucky there. Working as a library assistant was a blast but the pay was dismal - well, even more dismal than that of librarians in general.  (Let's face it, we're not exactly in a highly paid profession, are we?)

I'm really amazed at the number of library people on this site!  But maybe I shouldn't be-

[wavey] back at ya.  And I know of a few other librarians who are Dark Shadows fans as well as those of us who have already 'fessed up.

Dark Shadows people are "story" people....no wonder there are so many librarians!  We're also people who like to read (the number of people on this forum who read the same novels I do amazes me) AND look at how many of us are driven to write fan fiction!!

ps to Luciaphil........See, I TOLD you so! ;)
