I'm curious (LOL) about the adaptations of two Lovecraft tales, "Pickman's Model" (which had a classic dramatization on Night Gallery back in the early 1970s) and "Dreams in the Witch House." The latter very loosely inspired the film Curse of the Crimson Altar co-starring Christopher Lee, Barbara Steele and Boris Karloff, back in 1968--one of my fave raves even though it's often dissed by other fans and critics.

WORTH WATCHING: Guillermo del Toro’s Horror Anthology, ... (https://www.tvinsider.com/1066690/guillermo-del-toro-patient-monarch-karen-pirie/)

"Cult auteur and horror fan Guillermo del Toro presents a weeklong anthology of deluxe horror stories."

Cabinet of Curiosities
Netflix
SERIES PREMIERE
Taking a cue from Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone and especially Night Gallery), Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water) shares his love for baroque horror as host and curator of a four-night wallow in things that go boo (and worse) in the night. With two episodes dropping daily through Friday, the Cabinet opens with the theme of “Scavengers” who get more than they bargain for. Tim Blake Nelson (Watchmen) stars in “Lot 36” as an amoral Storage Wars-like bidder on abandoned lockers who awakens a horrific entity. David Hewlett (Water) chews the grisly scenery in the darkly Dickensian “Graveyard Rats”—and the title’s no joke—as a debt-ridden grave-robbing graveyard steward who believes rodents are depriving him of his buried treasures. His subterranean search ends about as well as you’d expect. These immorality tales have a Tales from the Crypt sting to them.

WORTH WATCHING: ..., Del Toro Salutes Lovecraft (https://www.tvinsider.com/1067102/leslie-jordan-call-me-kat-ghosts-cribs-rupert-grint/)

"Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities anthology features two creepy tales based on stories by the influential H.P. Lovecraft."

Cabinet of Curiosities
Netflix
The lavishly produced horror anthology turns its attention to influential supernatural legend H.P. Lovecraft with two vignettes based on his eerie stories. “Pickman’s Model,” which also inspired a Night Gallery episode back in 1971, stars Westworld’s Ben Barnes as a would-be artist who glimpses madness in the canvases of a fellow painter’s (hammy Crispin Glover) drawings. Twilight’s Catherine Hardwicke directs “Dreams in the Witch House,” headlined by Harry Potter star Rupert Grint as an obsessed student of spiritualism who seeks any weird avenue to reunite with his sister, who died as a child. The episodes are overlong and more ghoulish than truly scary, but there are worse ways to spend the week before Halloween.

Cabinet of Curiosities
Netflix
SEASON FINALE
The anthology saved one of its best for last, with The Walking Dead’s Andrew Lincoln and The Babadook’s Essie Davis starring in “The Murmuring,” based on an original story by del Toro and directed by The Babadook’s Jennifer Kent. They play married ornithologists who head to a remote island in 1951 to record the murmuration patterns of birds in flight. Their devotion to science and to each other is colored by tenderness and also sadness, with a past tragedy triggered by frightening visions within the abandoned house they occupy. Less garish than other Cabinet entires, it’s also the most truly haunting.

(I love Essie Davis' Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.)

Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities
For fans of: Tales from the Crypt, practical effects, monsters
Number of seasons: 1

Acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro produces and presents this fun horror anthology, which features standout episodes from great horror filmmakers including Jennifer Kent (The Babadook), Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night), and Panos Cosmatos (Mandy). They're all very well made, but since it's an anthology series, some episodes are better than others, which is why we ranked them. -Liam Mathews
