Teensy heads-up:  Johnny will be on David Letterman NEXT Thursday, June 25  [ghost_smiley]   Thanks to the various Depp boards for the info.

Late Night TV listings

Surely most of the focus will be on Public Enemies, but you never know if any future projects (ahem, DS) might be mentioned.  He will also be doing some press junkets for PE very soon, so ditto.  (BTW I'm not sure I like the sound of them pushing hard to do Pirates 4, lol  [ghost_tongue2]

Barnababes, love that!  [ghost_grin]  Thanks for the article and reply, Midnite.  I watched the first episode of True Blood and thought it was okay, but never watched more of it.  I should, since it seems to have gotten favorable word of mouth.  I still don't think it takes the place of DS, though!

It turns out the interview was conducted back in March, so it didn't seem like they wanted to discuss Johnny's long range projects (brief mention of Lone Ranger and some about The Rum Diary but that was about it).  Also, Douglas Brinkley (the author of the article) is a close friend of Johnny's and it seemed like they wanted to make the article more personal instead of nuts and bolts.

I loved the article and the photos, especially the one of Johnny playing a guitar (I run a website about Johnny's music so I always love more music stuff).  But it also gave me a weird feeling because the lifestyle is so many magnitudes different than anything I'd ever experience  [ghost_wink]  What a life!

Thanks LdyAnne, that was a great read.  Del Toro was actually my choice to direct DS; I didn't know that he was already involved with this other trilogy (I did know about The Hobbit, but still hoped he might have time for DS in between).  I do like that Del Toro is attracted to the vicious aspect of the vampire, but maybe he's a little *too* far in that direction.  I don't want Johnny to play Barnabas as merely a lovelorn hunk, and vicious would be great with me but I DO want him to be seductive, too.

It'll be interesting to see Del Toro's take on vampires.

According to Vanity Fair, the issue will be out in NYC and LA on June 3, and nationwide on June 9 (which just happens to be Johnny's birthday!)  Darn, I'm going to be away next week, but I guess I'll try to make a detour to a book store.  Anyone here from NY or LA?

See a preview of the article on Vanity Fair's official site:

I'm loving the guitar pic in slide 15 of the slideshow that is linked from the article  [ghost_grin]

Yippee!  The link worked great!  This is the start of Public Enemies promotion, and hopefully his interview will include any word on DS!  Uncensored, Unscripted, Unleashed... sounds promising!   [ghost_grin]  And on my end, I am selfishly hoping for lots of yummy photos  [ghost_wink]  Thanks jimbo!

Good find, jimbo, I hope it's true!  Though summer sounds a little on the optimistic side, considering it's already late May with no official confirmation.  I'd be happy enough with a fall start.  I'm not familiar with this website, but hope that it's solid on the prospect that the project is in gear!  Didn't I also just read somewhere that John August has said DS is his "next one to film"?

I should clarify that I thought JG-L himself was awesome in both Brick and The Lookout (especially the latter) but just didn't care for the films themselves.  I think he is a really gifted actor.

I really think that JG-L has had a fantastic career so far.  I liked him in 3rd Rock, and while I wasn't a huge fan of his films Brick or The Lookout, I've admired him for taking some risky, indie-ish roles instead of the usual cookie-cutter pretty-boy roles.  I don't usually go for rom-coms, but I've heard amazingly good buzz about 500 Days Of Summer, and I will probably try to catch that in the theaters.   A few days ago, I heard that he was just cast in a new upcoming Christopher Nolan film called Inception... check out the other cast members:  Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy.  Yowza, I don't even know what it's going to be about yet, but I'll go see that just for the cast!

It did cross my mind that it would be so cool if JG-L could be cast in the DS film.  Chris Jennings, maybe? :)

That is interesting about the smoking caterpillar.  The thing is, if I remember the original story correctly, he wasn't merely smoking, he was smoking a hookah, and I could imagine Disney being a little squeamish if they did that.  A regular cigarette, not as much, but I suppose the world is very politically correct these days (personally, I hate smoking, but I think it's silly to censor it).

Anyway, here is a somewhat silly feature article (Ed Wood was a hit?  It made about $5.  Gilbert Grape and Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas were hits?  They made about $10)  that mentions DS:

Movie fan anticipates going to great Depps for vampires

They probably meant "working to get the film made", as opposed to actually filming it or anything like that.  I just checked a timeline that I keep of all important Depp events  [ghost_wink]  and have the official DS announcement as having been July 26, 2007, which was not quite 2 years ago.  And I think that there have been reports that he was in talks with DC productions for a time prior to that.

As for the blogger, well, bloggers' opinions are like... well, you know, everyone's got one  [ghost_tongue2]  I for one hope that the film is as un-Charlie&ChocFac-like as possible.  But after seeing Sweeney Todd, my faith in Burton to direct this film has increased  (I still think someone like Guillermo del Toro might've been a more interesting choice for this one...)

There was a rumor a few years ago that Jolie and Depp were going to do Wuthering Heights together, and I was in the "Oh, please, no!" camp about that   [easter_grin]  I'm not sure how I'd feel about Jolie in DS- she's not a favorite of mine, but yet her persona is very strong, and maybe that would make her up to the task for DS.

As for women playing older roles, the situation with Rachel Griffiths in Blow (and Lea Thompson in Back To The Future, for that matter) is that they're playing their character at both a young age and an older age, so that's not as much of an insult as just being asked to play a mom of a 46 year-old! (even though Johnny looks easily 10 years younger than he is). BTW I have no idea what part Hope Davis would've been up for that she turned down- that one stumps me!  The article raises a good point, though, and I'm guessing that DS is going to be no different in that Barnabas' love interest(s) are going to be cast a good deal younger than Johnny instead of around his age. And in the case of Vicki, she really *has* to be lot younger, or else it wouldn't work that she's just starting out as a governess.

Interesting, thanks MB.  Going along with this, this past weekend I was browsing the IMDb message board of the Swedish film, Let The Right One In.  One of the posters there, I assume from what he wrote that he was a teen, said that he was in a video store and a group of other kids were looking at the DVD cover for Let The Right One In, and one girl tossed it back and said, "It looks like a ripoff of Twilight."  The guy/gal who posted to IMDb said he got in a big argument with her, because LTROI was written first, and she didn't believe it.  I found this attitude to be very concerning.  The younger fans of Twilight may not realize that Twilight isn't the first story about vampires, nor is it the be-all and end-all.  I can't really give a full opinion about Twilight because I haven't seen it (nor have I read the books), but judging from the clips I've seen, it's not even much of a vampire story so much as it is a story about teen love.  I just hope that they aren't so silly as to dismiss Dark Shadows as being a ripoff of their favorite hot trend.  And along with that, I hope (and trust) that TPTB don't try to make DS too trendy.  I do agree, though, that the production values are going to have to be a lot more up to date and along with the types of films that are released in today's world.  That's why I am wondering if they may go for an R rating.  Even if it's PG-13, I am guessing that they are going to imply a lot of gore.

Haha, Rachel Griffiths actually played Johnny Depp's mother in the film Blow (of course she had age makeup, though- she was portraying a character over the course of 30 or 40 years, and looked her age when Johnny's character was a child.  Still a funny choice, though).  Freddie Highmore is way too old to play David- he's 17!  And I assume she means Ralph Fiennes and Amy Adams.  Adams is a very interesting choice to play Angelique- I have usually seen her being overly sweet and innocent (Junebug, Enchanted) but somehow I could envision her as an evil witch.  Emma Thompson as Dr. Hoffman is pretty interesting, too.  I haven't heard of some of the others, so I can't comment.

Yes jimbo, a boatload of pix surfaced on Friday, including these pix and some others in a few different, more casual costumes.  In this pic, Aaron Eckhart (sp?) is in the driver's seat.  I thought filming was supposed to start tomorrow, but either it started early or they're doing run-throughs in full costume.  What I'm thrilled about is Johnny's hair. I know that sounds shallow  [easter_grin] but this film is set in around 1960, and I was thinking his haircut would be much shorter.  Nice to see it's more of a James Dean look, because now it's possible for him to have longer hair as Barnabas  [easter_cool]     LOL Midnite!
