Oh, I think the writer is just complaining about the "Fudderwhacken" (sp??) dance that The Mad Hatter does at the end of Alice In Wonderland.  I haven't heard of a single adult who likes that stupid dance  [ghost_wink]  (Maybe some kids do).  Personally, I thought it was a really bizarre addition to the film, and it was not even Johnny so they actually went to the trouble of getting a stunt dancer (plus a lot of CGI) to do that!  But maybe the writer isn't against dancing per se.

Johnny hates to dance anyway, but he often gets roped into doing it.  It'll be fun to see if old Barn has some moves!  Too bad it's a little early for disco dancing  [ghost_cheesy]

I was trying to look through some old interviews, and boy, it's really hard to find a mention of Christi!  Here is one from GQ from 1993:  "sister-slash-savior-slash-manager. She keeps me organized, because I am not organized."  And I can think of a couple other times he mentioned her but don't have any exact quotes or sources.  But I think it's good that the articles that mention her as a producer for DS, Rum Diary and Hugo don't refer to her as his sister, because by now she's really earned the right to be recognized in her own right!

^^^ Yeah, well, up til now she's kept a pretty low profile.  She can often be spotted at premieres or awards shows, but only in the background looking busy, and you'd only know it was her if you were looking for her.  Johnny doesn't talk about her often- I think this is mainly for the privacy of his family- but on the rare occasion he's basically mentioned that she's responsible for handling his whole career.  She's credited on IMDb as his assistant as far back as 1995 but in the early 90's, he was already mentioning her helping him.

I just had a conversation with a few fans recently, wondering if she will actually give any interviews and press conferences now that her first few titles as a producer are coming out this year (Hugo and The Rum Diary).  Also, it'd be great to get a photo of them actually posing together for a change  [ghost_smiley] She deserves so much credit- one of the unsung heroes, for sure!

In this case, though, DS is really at least as much in Johnny's hands (or at least his sister, co-producer Christi Dembrowski) as Tim's.  I think that Johnny has enough clout that if he wanted to be somewhere, he would be, but a Teen Choice sighting was pretty much a long shot.   I'm a little surprised the Teen Choice wouldn't want to capitalize more on his wins with at least a video, but then again, the Teens are more interested in Justin Bieber and the Twilight crew, anyway  [ghost_wink]

^^^  In fact, he *did* win for Animated Voice.  Doubly sad he didn't at least get to submit a taped video.  Oh well, congrats to him!

So, Johnny won for The Tourist, but he wasn't there and didn't submit a video :(  In fact, it was just among some awards they just announced quickly.  For Sci Fi/Fantasy, he lost to Taylor Lautner, and I didn't find out what happened to Animated Voice because I wasn't listening to the whole thing, but if he'd won I'd imagine they would've announced it with the Tourist win.

i'm not super familiar with burton's work but doesn't he favor wigs in a big way?

Hmm, I think it depends on the movie.  Alice and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were heavy on the fantasy, so I think there were a lot of wigs and exaggerated looks.  But I think that for a lot of films, they use their own hair.  That's not to say a wig coudn't be used, though- I think that Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci used wigs for Edward Scissorhands and Sleepy Hollow, respectively.  I'm thinking that for the 1700's stuff, the men might be wearing wigs.

Personally, I wouldn't mind Pfeiffer being a blonde Liz, especially having a blonde daughter, but I do hope that her hairstyle will be somewhat conservative and elite-looking.

For what it's worth, the Teen Choice Awards are tonight (it airs on Fox) and Johnny has 3 nominations

Actor - Action Movie (The Tourist)
Actor - Sci Fi/Fantasy (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides)
Animated Movie Voice - (Rango)

I doubt he'll be there, because he was spotted at a rugby game yesterday in England.  But sometimes he submits an acceptance video (if he wins anything, that is).

Unfortunatelyl, Chloe Moretz doesn't have a nomination, but her film Let Me In is up for Horror movie.  Next year, maybe Dark Shadows will be in that spot  [ghost_wink]

I'm only guessing here about how the media are publicizing/discussing the film, but I think that in general, folks like to capitalize on the partnership among Tim, Johnny and Helena.  They've done a bunch of films together now, but Helena has not always had a starring role- for instance in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, her role as Charlie's mother was actually quite small, and even in Alice In Wonderland, I think she was billed as supporting actress.  It was only Sweeney Todd and Corpse Bride where she was really a lead. But I think the media like to emphasize her in Burton/Depp films, anyway, just because she's perceived as part of the package :)

All to say that while I wouldn't be surprised if Julia's role is bigger than Helena made it sound (if so, perhaps she was being sarcastic but I'd kinda take it as modesty),  I also wouldn't be surprised if it turns out more of a supporting role.  But I guess we just have to see!

Current Talk '11 II / Re: Depp/Burton DARK SHADOWS Spoilers
« on: July 20, 2011, 12:25:01 AM »
I think that Brandon brings up a very good point and I do agree with it.  So maybe I don't actually mean to say that none of the spoilers would bother me  [ghost_wink]  *Most* of them wouldn't, but I also don't want Barn to be a watered-down vampire- I want it to be dark and menacing (I'm one for hoping the film will be R rated, even though I admit there are advantages, mostly monetary, of going for a PG-13 rating).

As for the artwork, the first thing I thought of was that maybe there would be portraits of Josette, Quentin, Barnabas, Angelique, etc that we'd know from the series.  Not necessarily the original props (though it'd be great if they still existed!!)  but just close enough that fans would recognize them.  And of course, it wouldn't matter if they didn't look like the film's cast members, because they could just be identified as other family ancestors.

Hi neiljohnson, thanks for the spoilers.  I've elected to read them, knowing there are always pros and cons of doing so, but I appreciate that the members here are given the choice by having a separate thread and a spoiler button!

Realizing that these may be made up, and we should always take this info with a grain of salt unless we hear it from a credible source, these sound like reasonable plot points.  A few of them are already substantiated, such as

[spoiler]Alice Cooper's cameo and the "hippy" extras[/spoiler]

so we'll see if the rest is true.  I wouldn't be bothered by any of the changes from the original series (or film) if they do turn out to be true.

A couple of general thoughts,
[spoiler]The aspect of the hippies being in the wrong place at the wrong time, as well as Barnabas learning how to drive a car, and maybe not having complete mastery of his powers, sound like a lot of fun and could certainly account for the descriptions of the script being "funny".  They also seem right up Johnny's alley and I could see him having a ball with it!  However, I also like that certain aspects, such as Angelique dying and other major character(s) dying, sound very dark.  I hope they will not be afraid to show the dark nature of the story![/spoiler]

Like you, I would take a lot of this stuff with a huge grain of salt (unless there are photos  [ghost_wink] ).  This Zone poster is brand new; I know some of the gals over there and if it had been someone I was familiar with, I'd put a lot more weight behind it than I do.  But also remember that if it *were* legit, they would probably have had to sign confidentiality agreements and would not be able to provide specifics, anyway.  So, just keep these tidbits and descriptions tucked away in the back of your mind, in case, but don't bank too much on 'em.

As for what the runner said, could it be that Johnny/Barnabas is not recognizable while in some kind of transformed vampiric state?  The show didn't really have the resources to change Frid's appearance very much (with the exception of when he aged rapidly) but so much more is possible for a motion picture.

Anyway, going by the past few Burton films when we've sometimes been lucky enough to get thrown a bone of a brief look at character(s) before the filming is complete (which may be in a month or so, if they're on schedule), I'm still hoping we may get to see an actual image of someone from the cast (hopefully Johnny) soon!  Drumming my fingers...

Current Talk '11 II / Re: The Netflix $6 Increase
« on: July 15, 2011, 02:50:38 PM »
I don't begrudge a price increase, but I do think that it's silly that they don't offer any discount for a bundled plan (ie., getting discs plus streaming is the cost of the two plans added).  I also think it's silly to initiate this at a time when not enough titles are available for streaming to be able to replace getting DVDs.  I guess it depends on what you want to watch, but I intend to drop streaming, at least for now, and stick with a 2 DVD plan.  I know they eventually want to eliminate the discs, and I would like to, too, but not yet.  Luckily, I've only had occasional trouble with DVDs being cracked, scratched, or otherwise not playing, and when that happens, they always send a replacement the same day or the next day after I report it, so I've had no complaints on that front.

Wonder why everyone is up so early today?

A scene at sunrise??  Ooh, the possibilities    [ghost_cool]

I would not be at all surprised if LilyRose is an imposter.  It's a creepy trend to take the names of "celebrities" or other real people as one's online moniker/alias.

Well, I have given my personal opinion.  Lily-Rose is 12, and Jack is only 9.  Both Vanessa and Johnny have spoken out often about not putting their children in the public eye, and giving them as much privacy as they can until they're old enough to make their own decisions. They do not attend premieres or other public events with him (at least not on the red carpet; they were at Disneyland the day of the Pirates 4 premiere but not with him, and it was only discovered when paparazzi got their pix).  Johnny has spoken out about what he thinks of paps that take their photos, and he will often walk separately or send his family around another way when they're out together to minimize exposure to them. Many Depp fan sites forbid pix of his kids on their sites because of his stand on this.  The only exceptions are a handful of "sanctioned" photos that have been taken by a professional photographer friend.  While it's true that they're getting older, I don't think they're yet at the age where they'd be permitted to have twitter accounts.  And I doubt they would be announcing their whereabouts to the public.  Just my opinion.
