Calendar Events / Announcements '12 I / Re: New Night Stalker Movie?
« on: June 07, 2012, 12:48:27 PM »
I think that if Depp sincerely wants to it, it will get done. But, as we've seen, it could take awhile.

Yep, exactly.  Here is what I've read about the project so far:  as of now, the director will be Edgar Wright, who has directed Shaun of the Dead and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World:

Deadline.com: Disney Taps Edgar Wright To Helm Johnny Depp In ‘The Night Stalker’ Feature Redo

And just a few weeks ago, D.V. DeVincentis was signed to the project as the screenwriter.  He also wrote the High Fidelity screenplay.

Hollywood Reporter: Johnny Depp's 'Night Stalker' Movie Enlists 'High Fidelity' Writer (Exclusive)

So so far, nobody who was connected with DS, except for Johnny.  And yeah, it's a Disney film  [ghost_blink]   [ghost_huh]  From the talent involved so far, I don't think it will be serious.  But I love Shaun of the Dead, so I'm kind of excited by it- I just hope Disney will let it be dark enough (on the order of Pirates 1 would work for me).

It'll probably take awhile.  We don't know what Johnny is doing after Lone Ranger, but some think it may be The Thin Man, as it's already had a director and screenwriter for awhile, and there is some chatter about casting.  Or it may be Pirates 5  [ghost_rolleyes]

Boxoffice.com has reported the Tuesday box office for DS at $458,130, which is a nice jump from yesterday (as is usually the case for Tuesdays).  The domestic total is now $71,543,234, which now surpasses Chocolat ($71,509,363) to become Johnny Depp's #10 film in terms of unadjusted domestic box office (not counting films in which he had cameos).  The film is also inching closer to that coveted $200 million worldwide mark!

Thanks MB, interesting.  We'll soon see what the total theater number is for next week, but in my area, since I posted yesterday, the theater that is second-closest to me (the one that I said had only so far posted Prometheus and Madagascar 3 showtimes) has now posted the rest of its showtimes, and surprisingly, they will still have 6 showings per day of DS.  My closest theater, as well as another local one, will have 1 showing per day (one noontime, one 9 p.m.), and in at least one other fairly close theater it will be gone.  Plus, as I mentioned before, at least one IMAX near me will have it through June 21.  So I have the full range!  [ghost_smiley]

Many theater listings are not updated until Wed. (sometimes even later).

Try Fandango:
http://www.fandango.com
and put in your zip code or town.  You can also search by movie.

As of now, Tuesday evening, several theaters in my area are updated, but now only list one showing for DS.  In one, it appears to be gone.  In another, only Prometheus and Madagascar 3 (the new movies) are shown for now, and the showings for current films haven't yet been added.  Still, as I feared, I think DS will take a big hit this week, with the two aforementioned movies being huge movies taking over a lot of theater screens  [ghost_sad]

LOL, well, not really- they said in other interviews that they'd never even met Johnny before, and that MTV had suggested the pairing (though they said they were impressed with Johnny when they rehearsed the day before).  I was wondering if they had any past history/friendship.  Even if it was egged on by MTV, I can't tell you how thrilled I was that he played with them-- I had a feeling he might but wasn't sure.  All of the news media this morning are praising him for spending more of his time playing than doing some long-winded speech about himself.

I was glad to see at least a quick clip of DS among the montage they showed.  I wish it could've been more, but at least the DS one was one of the ones they chose that actually had sound (for those of you who didn't watch, they included the clip where Carolyn asks if he's stoned, and his reply).

If any did watch, and saw a blonde young lady clapping when they were presenting the award, that was Johnny's daughter Lily-Rose.  They are usually so protective of the kids and keep them away from the spotlight and paparazzi as much as possible, but Lily-Rose just turned 13, so possibly, they are loosening up a bit. I was a little shocked to see her on a major TV broadcast like that. His son Jack (10) was also there but not shown in close-up.

Does anyone know if Thomas McDonell filmed any scenes as the younger Barnabas? They made such a big deal out of casting him that it was surprising not to see him in the film.

I'm pretty sure that both MB and I had recalled hearing a comment from McDonell (either a tweet or in an interview or something) that he had completed filming his part for DS.  I do not remember a source of this; perhaps MB does.  That would imply that scene(s) were filmed but ultimately cut out.  I'd been hoping to find out why.  I wonder if there was going to be a scene with a younger Barnabas and Angelique, to bridge between the time they were children and the time when they were getting hot and steamy.  Maybe they felt it wasn't necessary, and Barn and Ang are both still fairly young (or at least they both LOOK really young!) when the curse occurs.  However, I would've liked to see a tiny bit more history between them, just to flesh out why she felt so darn slighted.  It wouldn't have had to be much, but just a taste of them having this history.  I wonder if either the DVD or McDonell himself will ever address this publicly.

(In the case of Sweeney Todd, Christopher Lee was going to be in it, as part of a "ghost chorus"- they were going to sing the Ballad of Sweeney Todd and such, but sadly, the part and that whole aspect was cut before it was ever filmed.  Luckily, one of Lee's relatives (nephew, I think??) who runs his website explained that it was cut and that Christopher understood and was okay with it, and I believe that Burton and even Stephen Sondheim spoke about it later.  However, in this case, I haven't heard a similar discussion yet explaining McDonell's absence  [ghost_sad]  )

DS is likely to be playing in the US for longer than 2 more weeks. If one looks on Box Office Mojo at how many days most major films in wide release have been playing of late, the shortest amount of time seems to be 56 days/8 weeks with several going 77 days/11 weeks and longer. DS only began its 4th week yesterday.  [ghost_smiley]  And one thing we do know for sure is that it will be playing in certain IMAX locations for at least 6 weeks.  [ghost_wink]

Oh yeah, it'll still be in theaters for awhile yet.  However, it's going to lose theaters, and in the theaters it's in, it will lose screenings as more time goes by.  Its theater loss has been pretty minimal so far (DS like most films kept the same number of theaters in weeks 1 and 2, and then lost a few hundred in each of weeks 3 and 4) but don't be surprised if a week or two from now the theater count goes down by 1,000 or more.  I think it will probably take a big hit next week with Prometheus and Madagascar 3 coming in- they're both blockbusters that will need a lot of screenings.  This will hurt the box office, but it happens to every film (even The Avengers, but since that is still doing so well it'll probably take a lot longer for that one to go away :( ;) Also, that one has the potential to break the all-time box office record, so there will be pressure to keep that film in theaters forever to milk the box office for all its worth  [ghost_cheesy] )  At some point, DS will start being in discount and dollar theaters, before eventually leaving theaters.  I think that folks in major cities will have no problem finding showings in the coming weeks, but those in smaller towns may start to notice it going away  [ghost_sad]  We'll see!

Hmm, well, I agree about the editing, or the (apparent) deletion of scenes that might've fleshed out the story better.  But I personally didn't have any problems with the pacing or the tone.  I really did not find the comedy jarring, and to me it didn't feel out of place (and I actually maintain that this film is much less of a comedy than it's been described as).  Even the Top of the World montage, which is arguably the lightest, most comedic portion of the film, was done in such a way that it worked for me to just sort of represent Barnabas starting to fit in with the everyday world.  Maybe the end confrontation could've been a little more streamlined and concise, but I can kind of understand the need to have a "big climax" scene in the film.  But there was never a point where I felt the film was dragging or feeling tedious, and I didn't think it was too long (and I agree with those who have said that it could probably have been a little bit longer without any detriment).  But as we all know, we all have different feelings about this.  I'm just glad it works pretty well for me!

This is probably (but not necessarily) off topic-- Johnny Depp will be the recipient of the MTV Generation Award, which will be presented tomorrow night at the MTV Movie Awards.  I believe he is expected to attend, and Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith will present the award.  I'm hoping that there will be a DS pitch and some film clips or something.

I groaned when I found out that it's airing tomorrow night at 9, because that is the same time as the Game Of Thrones season finale.  Argh!  What makes it even worse is that in recent years, the MTV Movie Awards has become really painful to watch.  Oh well, I will just have to catch the GoT repeat at 11.

With the Friday estimate, DS has now surpassed The Tourist's domestic box office.  By the early next week, it should pass Chocolat to enter Johnny's Top Ten films in terms of domestic box office (not including cameos).  Remember, too, that 4 of those Top Ten films are Pirates movies, which kind of skew everything.

By the way, I was noticing that one of the two IMAX's in the DC area that are still showing DS, at the National Museum of Natural History, has now committed to showing DS through June 21.  So even if it may get hard to find on IMAX, it's not totally disappearing from IMAX for another 3 weeks.

Fact is, as we've all seen and discussed, the entertainment media need to spin a story to make headlines.  A film is either a record-breaking success (Avengers) or it's a flop.  If they kept saying this or that film did just okay, then nobody would read their stories because folks aren't interested in reading about things doing average.

I would call DS a box office disappointment, but far from a flop.  And, it's still in theaters so the story isn't over yet, and the foreign box office results are going to take a while to catch up.  I'm pretty satisfied that it's doing decently enough that when all is said and done (with DVD sales, etc.) it will probably make its money back, which is what I wanted in the first place.  And other than that, as long as I enjoyed the movie for the most part, then selfishly, that's the most important thing to me  [ghost_smiley]

Yeah, I hope that if there continues to be at least a modest number of folks filling seats, that it will only gradually lose theaters.  This week, the only big release is Snow White and the Huntsman, and to be honest I don't really feel that there is a huge clamoring for this film (while I love Charlize Theron, this one just doesn't look all that interesting to me).  But next week, both Prometheus and Madagascar 3 are going to be much more serious competition for theaters, I'm afraid.  I still hope that at least the larger theaters will keep a few showings of DS (either on one screen or even sharing a screen with another film) as far into the summer as possible, so that it can take advantage of the older kids and college kids being out of school.

Interestingly, we just heard yesterday that Johnny's next film, The Lone Ranger, was moved from May to July of 2013.  Even though it's Disney and not Warner Bros., I wonder if any of that decision had anything to do with DS having to follow Avengers so closely, and maybe a different strategy would be to wait until the May blockbusters have died down a little bit so that they're a little less of a competition.  The article mentioned other films coming out next spring/summer but I didn't really pay attention, as I have trouble thinking that far ahead ;)  But with DS this year, I don't know how much a July release would have helped since Spiderman and Dark Knight Rises are also going to be huge films.  (Yeah, I've said it before and so have a lot of you- maybe they should've just done a fall release  [ghost_sad] )

According to Box Office Mojo, DS lost 402 theaters but is still playing in 3002 theaters.  That is still pretty good!  I am hoping to get to see it for my 3rd time this weekend.  I'll possibly make the trek to the IMAX since I think it'll be leaving after the 7th, but I have to say that the film looked really good in non-IMAX, as well (so far I've seen it once each way).

DS's Wed. box office was $628,309, down from Tues. as expected, but not as much of a decrease as most other movies, and it did better than Chernobyl Diaries (which had only $612K).  That should put it in 7th place for the day, but not all the numbers are in yet.  The total is now $66,311,625.

[quote author=Cousin_Barnabas link=topic=37211.msg210343#msg210343 date=1338419764I find this to be a very interesting observation.  And it leads me to another question... Does Josette's Ghost actually exist, or is she just in Maggie's mind?  Maggie is the only one who can see her.  (Her parents can't see her.  No one else at Collinwood saw her.)  So is this "ghost" just a figment of Maggie's very active imagination, an external symbol representing the fact that she is someone else?[/quote]

Yes, I believe she actually exists.  First, if I can believe all the other weird goings-on in the movie, why not believe in Josette's existence, too?  [ghost_grin]  Second, other than seeing and interacting with Josette, Maggie/Vicki seems very level-headed to me, and not someone who just goes around imagining random things.  And really, that house could've been a fertile environment for strange imaginings!    [ghost_wink]  And finally, and perhaps most importantly, I think that the audience is meant to see the parallels between David and Vicki- that they both have been misunderstood by their parents, and that Vicki understands what it feels like for people not to believe them.  There are a couple of sweet moments between Vicki and David, but it really would've been nice if they could've developed their relationship more.

Quote
It would have been cool to hear David talking to Laura from the other side of his bedroom door, a la 1991 (with David and Sarah).  If Vicki had conversations with David about his mother, and what his mother had to say...  Anything to let us know she was actually an important character.

Yes, agreed, and hearing a conversation from the other side of a door might've been a nice approach- similarly, they could've done something with strange noises (and not sexual ones!!) coming from Carolyn's room.  Nothing too overt, but just a couple more little hints here and there throughout the film.

Edited to add- it looks like all the theaters in my area will still have DS on Friday, though most of them have less showtimes.  One theater near me does still have about 8 showings, though, which is a little surprising.  Also, the 2 IMAX theaters are still showing DS through June 7- you can pre-purchase tix as late as that date.
