Yippee, DS has passed the $79.5M mark!  There was a slight rise in yesterday's box office compared to Wed., with $43,951 Thurs. vs. $40,338 Wed.  The total is now $79,519,186.  These #'s are from boxoffice.com, as BOM only seems to have Dark Knight Rises #'s so far:

DS will be losing 90 theaters next week, going down to just 132   [ghost_sad]  Oh well, better than having nothing left!

http://boxofficemojo.com/counts/chart/?yr=2012&wk=31&p=.htm

In other news, DS made $40,338 yesterday, bringing the total to $79,475,235.  Ah well, even if it doesn't reach $80M, it should clear $79.5M by tomorrow, assuming that it makes somewhere in the vicinity of $40K, plus or minus a few K.

And it can't be because Burton and/or Depp don't do commentary because they have in the past.

Well... not that often, though.  I'm trying to think of which ones Burton may have done- I can't really remember.  As for Depp, he usually does *not* do commentaries- there are indeed a few exceptions:  Pirates 1 and Fear and Loathing are the ones that come to mind; I remember being sorely disappointed that there wasn't one for The Rum Diary, despite Hunter S. Thompson being a very close friend of Johnny's.  I just think that Johnny is a little more comfortable doing some behind the scenes or interview snippets rather than a running commentary- during the Pirates 1 commentary with Gore Verbinski, it seemed like both of them ran out of things to talk about at certain points  [ghost_grin]

I for one am very happy with the list of features that are being described, and can't wait to see them.  I do feel for the folks who don't have blu-ray players as I myself didn't own one until about 6 or 8 months ago, and then I bought a pretty cheap one (~$70).  I think it's possible to spend even less, but for someone who doesn't have the cash, and already has a DVD and/or VCR (yes, I still have one of those, believe it or not!) it's money that shouldn't need to be spent.  I just wish they would offer the same features in both formats, so folks could choose :(

So, DS is back to being tracked daily, I guess.  Yesterday's numbers are in- DS made $44,102, up 10% from Mon.  Domestic total is now $79,434,897.  It seems to be in 20th place at the moment but as always, something else could sneak in ahead of it.  Box office mojo for Tues.:

http://boxofficemojo.com/daily/chart/?view=1day&sortdate=2012-07-31&p=.htm

I think it may be possible for it to hit $80M but it'll really have to keep chugging away, and even then it could take a few more weeks, risking losing theaters with each new week.

I lost track of how MIB3 was doing, and it doesn't seem to be on BOM's list from yesterday, but I'll take your word for it, David-Elijah  [ghost_smiley]  But at the moment DS is doing better than Battleship (of course), Prometheus, and Abraham Lincoln.  I don't see Avengers on the Tues. list (or actually the number hasn't been updated since the 29th) so I guess they stopped doing daily tracking on that one, too.

I actually loved the first 2 Batman films (haven't seen the new one)   [ghost_smiley]  I hope we can still be friends, lol  (Just kidding- I know we can!  [ghost_wink] )   But it does sting, doesn't it, when they say "nobody cares", when obviously, many of us do!  Speak for yourself, MSN, and let us care if we want to!  [ghost_tongue]

By the way-- too late to edit my post above, but they now have the weekly results, and (so far) DS is in 13th place for last week!  But even if another film or two sneaks in ahead of it, worth noting is that DS made more than The Avengers last week!  ($1,652,140 vs. $1,045,837)  Bet you never thought you'd hear that!  [ghost_smiley]

Finally, we've got some numbers from Boxoffice.com for DS's box office last week!

Sat, July 21 - $548,323 (ditto!)
Sun, July 22 - $255,357
Mon, July 23 - $103,693
Tues, July 24 - $131,444
Wed, July 25 - $116,630
Thur, July 26 - $90,559

for a grand total of $79,063,300!

http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=daily&id=darkshadows.htm

It's currently listed 14th on bom's Thursday box office, though as usual it may not be complete yet:

But to me, this is a VERY respectable showing for so late in the film's run!

So, in answer to my question about the theater count for the coming week, DS will take a big loss of nearly half its theaters, going down from 412 to only 222 theaters.

Box office mojo's theater counts for the coming week:

Uncle Roger, glad to hear that the film has been popular in your area.  I think it's a little odd that someone walked out during the Ang/Barn sex scene, which was really pretty tame IMHO and played more for laughs.  When the film first came out, I thought more folks seemed offended by the Julia/Barn scene (though I guess I have no morals because I wasn't offended by either one of them! :) )

Well, we've gotten through most of the week without knowing anything about the box office.  Withdrawal!  I do hope that they will update it tomorrow for the weekly earnings.  It'll also be interesting to see what happens to the theater count- that should be posted a little later today.

I agree that there is a lot of hatred toward Burton these days.  It was once hip to like him but now he's not so cool anymore.  I wonder if Frankenweenie will do anything to change that, because some might be fond of the original and consider this a return to form.

Critics/entertainment media are mixed about Johnny at the moment.  They are tired of the Pirates/Burton type films (and sadly, DS falls under that umbrella and I think that at least some critics were never even gonna give it a chance).  And yet, they didn't get behind his "normal" roles like The Rum Diary or The Tourist, either.  But on the bright side, everyone loved him in Rango and in his 21 Jump Street cameo, and regardless of how they rated Pirates 4 and Alice in Wonderland, both those films were undeniable moneymakers.  He just signed up for a Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, Moonrise Kingdom) film, and all the articles say how great it is because Anderson is very "in" now (how Burton used to be once upon a time  [ghost_wink] ) and they think Anderson can get Johnny's career back on track  [ghost_rolleyes]

Gosh, how I would've loved the '04 pilot as an extra somewhere, because I have never seen it.  Oh well.

Still no DS numbers for the weekend; I wonder if they've stopped tracking it.  If they hadn't added all those theaters this week, I wouldn't be surprised if they did, but now it's a little weird not to have the numbers.

Yes, mm, that is what blu-ray.com says:

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Dark-Shadows-Blu-ray/35610/

though so far, I don't see it on Amazon for preorder (I'm signed up there to get a notice when it is up for preorder).

As to comparing DS with Wrath, unfair, unschmair.  They both got the same chance, and if Wrath was doing better later in its run it would've had more theaters.  Wrath did better in its opening, so now DS gets a chance to do better later on.  A comparison is valid, I say!  [ghost_smiley]

Yes, and it looks like estimates for ALL films, not just Dark Knight Rises, have been withheld for the weekend.  That is definitely understandable.  What an unspeakable tragedy, and it certainly puts everything into perspective, doesn't it?

Even if DS is still doing pretty well, I'm pleasantly surprised that it added as many theaters as it did- I was hoping that best case scenario, it'd keep the theaters it had, but I guess I should've aimed higher  [ghost_wink]  I wonder where all these extra theaters are, though, since several of us haven't seen it being added near us.  Oh well!

Anyway, DS made $34,709 yesterday, which once again beats the total from 3 Thursdays ago (which was $32,608).  It's slightly down from Wed., but almost all the films did worse yesterday than Wed.  The domestic total is now $77,411,160.

Yikes, DS is actually *adding* more theaters next week- the count will go up by 173 to a total of 412!  Great news, though it still doesn't look like it will be playing in my area.  Not all the theater counts are up yet, but here is the table on box office mojo (DS is in the "expanding" category):

boxoffice.com has most of the Wed. numbers up:

http://www.boxoffice.com/statistics/bo_numbers/daily/2012-07-19

DS brought in $35,809 yesterday, which is WAY more than the $29,644 it made 3 Wednesdays ago. It continues to beat Battleship.  The domestic total is now $77,376,451.  It'll be interesting to see how many theaters it will lose next week; the theater counts usually go up Thursday evenings.  Since The Dark Knight Rises will have the 2nd-largest theater opening ever, that is bound to take a bite out of a lot of other films, but I don't know how much of an effect it will have on DS since DS is mainly in second-run theaters now.
