This is a weird one.  We're told that David and Carolyn are "pieces in an awesome puzzle," yet what we get from him are brattiness and spite, and from his cousin-- an apparent unwillingness to share her father with her mother and a preoccupation with curtains.  The voiceovers repeat that a horrific evil threatens the family, yet their conflicts seem to be the stuff of standard soap fare.  Yet at the same time, the proprietors of the village shop are literally being terrorized.

David:  "I snitched it."
Did we really say that back then?

Swaddling a feverish baby in a wool blanket?  That's about as brilliant as letting a vitally important book lie around where strangers come and go, or leaving the upstairs room (that you promised to keep hidden from prying eyes) unlocked and unguarded.

Maggie's redoing the cottage?  What cottage?  Will she live there?
The cottage that she and Pop occupied.  There are renters in it now.

Quote
At cairn... Philip:  "I've been this way a dozen times."   On fire?!
Snort.

"Log baby"... suddenly we're in Twin Peaks!
The Nagas are not what they seem!
Ha!

Actually we did get a brief look at the chair at the Old House, but I forget which episode.
As Lydia said, it's this one.  Philip carries it downstairs and sets it down in the Old House foyer.

Currently, all attachments (even those not on the Caption board) are opening on a new page.  So the thumbnails do enlarge, but you might have a browser setting on your computer that's preventing the new page from opening.  As to why they're not enlarging inside the post, I'm deferring to MB.

Wow, Megan with extreme prejudice!!   Steal a book, go to hell!!   Go with it Evil Meg, you're more interesting this way!!   Evil Philip on the other hand is irritating.   His reading of the word "Kill!" indicates that he is a member of the "Dark Shadows is Camp" camp.    It's interesting how they both stop occasionally to do a half-hearted reality check, pondering on the fact that they never talked about killing people before.... then they shake off the doubts and get back to the important business of killing the whole world!
<chuckle!>  Really good and enjoyable comments by everybody else, too.

The opener was redone minus Maggie.  Which is not necessarily a bad thing.  And geez, is there no one that Jason didn't play?

We haven't seen Mrs. Johnson in a couple hundred eps, yet we keep hearing about her.  I wish they'd just show her already.  The show also seems to be on a roll with mentions of Christmas.

When did David take the book?  [scratch] Does it shrink to fit into pockets too?

Hopefully, someone can point out what parts don't match up

Or not.  Anyway, "the log baby" (lol) first showed up in #893.  Maybe that's what you were referring to?

I took another look at Megan's sleepwear.  It was a nightgown.

Boarding up the windows in the upstairs room and preventing outsiders from seeing it are straight outta Lovecraft's The Dunwich Horror.  So is, to some extent, the book written in the unknown alphabet.

Philip:  "In darkness it will come. In darkness it will grow."
Megan:  "And darkness it will bring."
Now that's creepy.  More creepiness-- when they blankly stare upstairs.

May I just say that I'm enjoying Chris Bernau's performance?  Yes, I know his line delivery can often fall short (my favorite-- "I'm JUST... PLAIN... SCARED!"-- is still to come), but it can't be easy playing a character that jumps from normal playfulness to hesitance to blind loyalty.  And I think he imbued Philip with a passivity that made him a nice foil for Megan's histrionics.

The black horned gramophone that occasionally showed up in 1897 has turned up in the antique shop.  And a statue that I hadn't seen in the shop before this ep was previously atop the newel post in the Old House, as seen in this capture:
Episode #304

Was Megan wearing pajamas when she got her orders from Barnabas?  It looked that way to me, but I was sufficiently involved with the story that I can't remember what it looked like when she got up.  And RobinV says the “infamous afghan” was on Megan's bed, but I didn't notice that, either.
I know that DS women, as a rule, sleep in their lashes and liner, but Megan's flawless application of bright red lipstick was what I found really distracting in that scene.

What bothered me the most about Maggie's surprise was that she would ambush a friend and then abandon her without knowing what her reaction would be.  Encouraging Carolyn to keep drinking (which I assume was a stall tactic) made Maggie's behavior seem even worse.

The cradle rocking on its own was a rehash from Quentin's old haunting days.  <yawn!>

Hopefully, someone can point out what parts don't match up because it looks right to me, but I haven't watched the ep in a long time.  Yet isn't there a scene here in which the chair is shown and talked about?

The VP of Southern California station KCET blogs near the recent Halloween about how his childhood fascination with DS influenced his reaction to a childhood loss:

http://kcet.org/local/blogs/bohdans_corner/2009/10/secrets-of-the-dead-mine.html

(The update has comments from PBS Producer TJ Lubinsky that the Carey Mansion is deserted and possibly facing demolition; this is not true.)

From Dracula to Edward: The changing face of vampires

Though how seriously can you take an article that discusses the evolution of the vampire from creepy to sexy AND includes TV vampires while mentioning the late 60s, describing the current vamps as creatures who walk among us, and emphasizing the sympathy factor, yet it totally skips DS?  Several reader comments, naturally, do mention the oversight.

(With thanks to Kosmo, who noted the omission of Christopher Lee's Drac, so there you go)

In case it helps: (But you'll have to read the topic to see explanations, and they're well worth it! [thumb])

Note: doctor, extremely, fancy, ghost, lovely, glorious, quite, quotable, dastardly, fatal, grotesque, young, uncertain and untimely have already been used.  This list seemingly covers You quotes beginning with: You always..., You gotta/You've got to/You have got to/You should..., You have to/You must..., You don't/You do..., You'll be/You will be... & You are/You're...  In addition, the prefixes XANTHO, XENO, and XERO will no longer be accepted.

We now ask that foreign words be specifically from the show as seen in the US.
