O.T.--- Vampire Hysteria in 1950s Scotland....

... Or, why something like DS would not have worked in Glasgow in 1954!

Police were called to the ginormous old Glasgow cemetery on the evening of September 23, 1954 to investigate an invasion of children in and about the place.  Expecting to find the tykes engaged in "normal" vandalism and pranks, they found instead a ragtag force of 100 or more youths, armed with knives and sharp sticks, questing against a rumored vampire infestation responsible for the alleged murders of two children.  Which deaths apparently never really happened!  Even so, the kids continued to "patrol" the cemetery for some time.

American horror comic books were blamed, and censorship laws were enacted to protect minors from "disturbing" content, though it is now believed that local, even parentally-related legends of Scottish origin may have contributed to the children's hysterical behavior.  And now they've made a documentary.

Wow, that's cool.  Also in the 1950s and 1960s there were isolated cases of cemeteries being vandalized, reputedly by Satanist cultists digging up skulls for use in the Black Mass--this in England rather than Scotland.

That still happens from time to time; often the incidents are blamed on Santeria and similar beliefs.  Perhaps just the work of jerky kids who want to PLAY at these rituals.

Last year a deceased Connecticut toddler was found by a river in New Jersey, one of several unrelated discoveries in the area.  This baby had attracted media attention during her life because she had survived almost 2 years with terminal deformities before dying of pneumonia, IIRC.

The family was not even aware her grave had been opened, because small children's graves are often too shallow and often lack vaults.  They ended up having the baby cremated.

Anyway, the reason for the theft was because of the poor little one's "miraculous" long survival--- it seems some cults believe that conferred her with magical powers.  Luckily they didn't harm her otherwise.
