I have to say I found it a hoot that Alice Cooper thought the set for the Great Hall of Collinwood looked "just like the Playboy Mansion."

That comment, and the macrame bit in the one clip, are the funniest things to have emerged from this affair this far, at any rate so far as I am concerned.

I don't know to what extent this factor has been discussed here, but we are obviously all aware of disgruntled DS fans gunning for the project in certain forums. Where reviews are concerned, the factor to be aware of is that there are people in "the Industry," including a number of professional critics, who are gunning for Tim Burton and who have probably been sharpening their hatchets for weeks now in preparation for the movie's opening.

I can't go over the litany of reasons why so many people in the industry profess to have had it with Burton, but it's been a frequent topic in certain other forums where I have seen the DS project discussed.  This has nothing to do with people's perceptions about what DS should or should not be; it has to do with people perceiving that Burton has sold out/come to a dead end/stopped caring/is repeating himself/etc. and so on.

The Forbes mag piece seems a bit premature.  There are many cases of movies tanking with the critics and cleaning up at the box office.  Just think of the Adam Sandler films (I think these were mentioned previously), the hot tub time machine films, the hangover films, etc.

I watched a little of the Youtube footage.  The premiere looked like the usualy H'wood madhouse.

I don't know why somebody found it necessary to yell that the late Mr. Frid is "the only Barnabas Collins."
Mr. Depp doesn't deserve heckling.  Regardless of what one may think of his performance or the movie, he has been very respectful to Mr. Frid throughout the project and said lovely words after Mr. Frid passed on.

Yeah.  If more of the movie were going to be along the lines of PfeiffLiz's scenes with BarnaDepp and JuliaBC, I might actually be interested in seeing it.

But most of what I have seen of it makes me think the thing will be a crashing bore. With stunning costumes and art direction, granted.

Congratulations!  I remember hearing of Karlenzine back when I first learned of fandom in the late 1980s.  It's very special that Mary has published a new issue.  Long may she sail!

Interestingly I just saw a fun Karlen cameo--it almost had the flavor of "Karlen does Columbo" (well, he did have the raincoat)--he played a baffled police detective in a Lela Swift production of the mid 1970s, The Cloning of Clifford Swimmer, which was recently shown on the "Fox" "movie" "channel."  The play was originally produced for the ABC Wide World of Mystery series.  Karlen's scene lasted perhaps five minutes, but he was great as always.

Interesting.

This isn't a spoiler really, but in this new "featurette," you hear the "Carolyn" flute riff from hoDS playing over the scene when the construction crew have just unearthed Barnabas and he utters the "thirsty" line when about to attack one of the men.

MB, I know you're probably not going to watch this, but I have one word I must share:

MACRAME!!!

I'm the same way, Gerard.  I've seen so many of these things now that what gives me real pleasure is the quality of the performances, how the story is told, whether the dialogue is of a superior calibre, etc.

It takes a really devious inventive mind to surprise me.  Two movies where I was at least jolted were Carrie and The Crying Game (where the "big reveal" was less of a surprise than how the director chose to reveal it).  I thought I couldn't ever be shocked like that again but it happened a couple of years ago when I saw the 1989 film The Woman in Black (recently re-made by a coalition of production companies including a revived aegis of Hammer studios).  A friend told me that there was no attempt in the remake to re-stage the shocking scene in the 1989 version.  Which was probably just as well.

cheers, G.

I checked McDonnell's own IMDB page the other day and DS 2012 is no longer listed among his credits.  Interestingly, he did do a movie called The Occult that's due for release next year.

I figured that he probably had just filmed a couple of scenes that might have been seen briefly in a montage type sequence about Barnabas's early life, but it would seem that his scenes wound up cut altogether.

As actors are well aware, this kind of thing happens all the time--an example that comes to mind is Barbara Steele's scenes in a movie called I never promised you a rose garden being cut.  And in the case of Grayson, only two of the four scenes that she filmed for End of the road made it into the final film.  Unfortunately, the scene that motivated Grayson to do the project was not among what was kept.

I believe it was shown on UK Sci Fi at some point in the 1990s.  In one of Nancy Barrett's cabaret performances, she did some patter about being in London and how DS was on at 3 a.m. to accommodate the viewing habits of the vampires!

I wonder whether house or Night of DS were released in the UK.  I was just thinking about it and realized I have seen promotional materials for the films for a number of countries, but none for the UK.

Interesting to see that an official UK issue of DS has finally happened.  A 3 disc set was released on April 30.  I have no idea whether further discs will be issued.  The series has already received a glowing review from a knowledgeable fan on Amazon UK.  It will be interesting to see a review of this specific release:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dark-Shadows-Original-Barnabas-Episodes/dp/B0077NF7AQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1336021777&sr=1-1

A number of vintage UK series from the 1960s and 1970s have been released in the past few years that have production values and styles similar to DS, so I could really see it taking off in the UK, provided it is marketed properly.

Yeah, michael.  those were the days, my friend!

Claude, perhaps we could rope in some of the other great day players as well.  Cavada Humphrey, Jane Draper, and Anita Sharp-Bolster could all play parts in the Julia's makeover scene.

It's fascinating how some of New York's most "emphatic" actresses of the Sixties managed to appear on the show... remember Paula Laurence and "Aunt Hannah"?

I'm forgetting the name of the divine old dear who portrayed Grandmamama Edith in 1897...

These are a hoot! Thanks for sharing.  I had never heard of the project.  Looks like great fun.

If 1967 Laura and Miss Hoffman had had a showdown, the uptilting of chins, elevation of eyebrows, curling of lips and flaring of nostrils would have been truly stratopheric...

And I weep to think of the possibilities if Lovey Powell and Grayson had been paired. Talk about lost opportunities.  DC wasn't around when Powell was on, so far as I recall (I think he was in England working on the Jack Palance Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) which may have been part of why she was never brought back.

Somewhat off topic, I recently had the pleasure of viewing on Youtube an episode of "Shirley Temple Theater" from the early 1960s which had Jonathan Harris (Dr. Smith on Lost in Space) and Agnes Moorehead doing scenes together.  The archness was almost unbearably fab.
