Post by: Patti Feinberg on February 19, 2003, 01:06:04 AM
THANK YOU MB & MIDNITE FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK TO GET US BACK UP & RUNNING.
20+ inches of snow...no board :'(

(psstt...how come I'm not 'applaud & smite')?

Thanx one and all for getting the board back up!

All this snow and no board, I was going nuts. Not really, I was going nuts with Outlook Express! Everytime I tried to reply to an email, Outlook would suddenly say ERROR and shut down.

At least I have the new board to check out while my email problem is getting resolved.

It said when I FINALLY got to the board tonight, that I wouldn't be able to post new topics and it was right. But everyone else is! Is this something along the lines of ME being shut out for weeks, and when I get here at last I see that others have been posting for two weeks or so?  :'(

The conversion was only completed this afternoon, and no one has started any new topics since.  All the topics you're seeing on the boards were begun prior to Sunday afternoon when we went offline.

We're asking all posters to please not submit a new topic until we give the go-ahead, or as long as that request is on the 1st page.

Welcome back. :)

I just have a question but since I can't post it under a new topic, I figured I may as well ask it here.  What is the new karma feature (applaud/smite) all about and how does it work?

Wow - I'm getting all sorts of weird things happening on here -- odd error messages, etc.  Must be my karma - LOL.  Even got some kind of crash with a list of other people's errors, someone's password, and strange code up above the Forums logo.   :o

Can't do anything in my profile -- get errors.

Why is the text so small [except for Connie and Minja] ?  [Size IS important!]  Is the test post by M'nite [1,2,3 below] related, and should I just be patient too?  Any patient needs plenty of medication.  [See also Roaring Chicken, Madman Medman.]  Please not to smite me!

What are you not able to change in your profile?

If it helps, it appears that avatars are required to be 65 x 68 pixels.

Collapsing was a feature that was eventually added to the other YaBB version of the forums in an effort to save bandwidth, and with MB's most recent priority having been to get the forum converted and to the point that we could reopen, and with more tweaking required, that along with several other features have to wait.

I've already downloaded the Collapsable YaBB mod for SE. It will be installed soon. However, several of the mods I'd installed on the SP forum aren't available (yet) for SE.

Kuanyin, I don't know any details about the problem you were having, but a couple of things come to mind.  First off, following our move to an interim server about 3 weeks ago, emails were sent to all members on January 26 asking them to update their bookmarks in order to access the forums.  Secondly, there's a topic on this board called "Problems Accessing the New Board?" that you might want to check out to see if you can find your answer there.  Sorry, but I don't know what else to tell you right now.

Connie and Minja changed the size of their text by using the YaBBC size tags. This is the default size for YaBB SE. However, I can probably change that if people think it's too small...

Hi Midnite... [no waveys anymore] lol

Oh, I was just trying to take the quotation marks away from the words under the avatar 'cause they don't show up right.  It won't let me change anything in the profile - I keep getting the 65 x 68 error message but I wasn't doing anything with the avatar.

Connie, I peeked at your avatar image, and this is a guess cuz this new forum setup is new to me too, but converting the image to pixels shows it's more than 4 times the recommended size, so it could be (as I said, this is just a guess) that the system isn't letting you save your updated profile cuz it's not accepting such a large image.

You could try reducing the size of the image and then seeing if you're able to save changes to your profile.  It's just a suggestion, but I've been able to update my profile without getting any error messages, so I don't understand (!) why you shouldn't be able to also.

The error messages above the forum came up because I was fiddling with the password to the forum's MySQL database. The listing was about that and the PHP scripts that didn't like what I'd done, so I changed everything back to the way it had been. But no user passwords were actually displayed. ;)

I second that.  The small print is quite a strain IMHO.  I think this is the size the print was before.  (Josette - I hit the font size button to give me 'size=2' to get this print)

This is too big, no?  (Size 3)

(Great - all Midnite & MB need is people complaining about different things)

PS  Thanks for the tip Midnite.  I'll try reducing it when I'm not feeling so lazy.

Yay!! It's finally back up!!  We had almost 20 inches of snow here and I was just about ready to beat Jeff Clark's Montage in a hair pulling contest! >:(

I still can't get on through AOL though (it figures) and was finally able to get here through IE.  Everytime I tried to access the board through AOL I kept getting the sign in board/password part.  So, I'd sign in and then click on a post and here would come the sign in part again telling me that Im not a "registered" member and to please sign in!

At last I got in through IE!!

VWR, thanks for telling me the specific error message because it helps tremendously.  When you attempted to update, our new setup detected a previous registration of yours with the same addy that's in your current profile.  I took care of it as same as we did back in July, so you should be able to update without seeing the error.

As far as smileys go, I'm not quite sure what you're referring to because they only have the same smileys that we currently have installed. They do have totally different avatars, though - all either photos or drawings from movies or TV shows. If those are available for download, I'd certainly be willing to download and install them. :)  (But just as there are on our site, there are also plenty of avatars on the YaBB SE site that were created for personal use by the posters themselves...)

Yes, we're free to install or remove whatever features, icons, avatars, etc. that we'd like.

Thanks, kuanyin.  I'm sorry to say I don't have any ideas to offer as to why you got the error message, and the thread I mentioned concerned posters that were having problems maneuvering on the forums after they were already here due to their firewalls. :-  If you again find yourself unable to access the site for a prolonged period of time, please don't hesitate to email one of us.  But the important thing is that you're able to get here now, whew.

Oh, OK. I had a few of those sets downloaded for the SP forum, but never had a chance to install them when their holiday came around. :( But hopefully I'll be able to install one the next time around. I could also install one of the horror themed set if enough people would prefer that over the basic yellow set. ;)

Even though you were only making one change, everything in your profile is updated. And SE is far more strick about enforcing the 65X68 rule than SP was, so that's why you received the error.

To update your avatar, just open it in whatever graphics software you have on your computer and then resize/resample it. Your original image is 645X437, so you would have to resize/resample it to 65X44 to use the image as is. Or you could crop it before you resize so that Penny's pretty face shows up better. :)

Please don't be afraid to try - resizing/resampling is really pretty easy. It just takes a little practice. :)

Onyx_treasure, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Any of the Adobe programs are easy to work in.  Most will resize the height and width at the same time, so if you enter the 65 (width) first the height will automatically adjust.  Remember that you'll be working in pixels, not inches.  My apologies if this is too basic, but if not you then maybe it'll help someone else?

I know of only one other - the "register" button on the main menu says "registrarse."

YaBB SE is more internationally oriented than SP was (it gives you a choice of languages in your profile), so I'm assuming that's why they include buttons in other languages in the English distribution (with the English meaning poping up when you put your cursor over them). Others could easily show up once I start installing the mods that I downloaded yesterday. ;)
