i disliked the film intensely upon my first theatrical viewing...

but upon subsequent viewings and certainly with the DVD release it's grown on me considerably. as someone said it's "it's own animal". it's a lighthearted romp.

certainly much of the criticism leveled at it...it's disjointed and hastily edited, most of the characters are poorly developed and underused, it's sort of all over the place...are quite valid. in terms of film structure it's deeply flawed. but it has it's own weird tempo and charm. and some great performances. in particular pfieffer, green and bohnam carter are really good. so is depp.

so while some of my initial reservations persist...i dislike the "magtoria" compromise and the late carolyn "reveal" will never sit well...i've come to accept it on it's own weird terms. it's an homage. a bit of a folly. but it can't be taken too seriously.

i quickly skimmed the closing credits and didn't see art wallace listed...

i suppose i could have missed it. or does he not have to receive a credit any longer?

incidentally i work with someone who just traveled to paris and this was the in-flight movie...

this person was a fan as a child and had fond if hazy memories of it but said she enjoyed the movie alot. she also had much praise for the cast.

i just picked up the DVD on the way home. i'll watch it at some point this weekend.

what's notable is that the film's packaging, much like the ill-conceived trailer, touts the film as a comedy and nothing else. even though we know it had many other elements.

"wickedly funny" and "hilarious" are the review quotes. for some reason somebody, somewhere, really wanted this to be marketed as being funny from start to finish. [hall2_rolleyes]

releasing an unfinished, unedited "what-could-have-been" script is just going to stir the pot and get all the whining and hand wringing going again.

nothing positive is going to come of it and personally i think it's a bad idea. [hall2_lipsrsealed]

i liked the 1995 sequence very much as well. parts of the "summer of 1970" worked for me but somehow it's where i started to drift away from the story.

visually 1840 has a great look. as someone pointed out it's unique to the time period. lots of pretty violets and blues.

maybe it's more a personal burnout on the whole thing than the specifics of the story. who knows. [hall_rolleyes]

true they do offer some rather hasty explanation as to why such a trial would be occurring at such a late date. but still it feels like a real stretch.

i think for me the one of the main problems is the courtroom scenes simply grant too much screentime to two characters i do not care for. i find any and all manifestations of the reverend trask to be the most grating and obnoxious characters to ever hit the series. and storylines that revolve around quentin bore me to tears.

for that reason these are difficult episodes to get through.

personally i never understood all the angst around barnabas killing [spoiler]carl...

carl was one of the "time travel characters".[/spoiler] eventually most of them get killed off anyways. that's sort of why they're created.

to me it's not as unforgivable as if he had killed one of the "real time" characters like liz or roger or maggie. he had no history or loyalty to the character and, well, he was a vampire after all. i think it was meant to demonstrate the character still had an element of dangerousness and unpredictability. and he didn't just kill hookers on the docks.

also don't the same people who produce the BFP also write for the dynamite comic series?

i believe those are also some sort of "officially sanctioned" stories that are vastly different from the ones being told on the audiodramas. by that measure aren't they supposed to be 'canon' as well?

it's impossible to keep it all straight.

i'm with you on 'canon' g...

i've always found it startling that there are people who look to them to "resolve" plot threads left dangling from the OS. because they're sanctioned by DCP that somehow makes them "official" continuity. the same thing with the RTC production at the fest several years back. some say it "proved" that liz was vicki's mother. to me it was just a festival skit. it didn't prove or resolve anything.

if it didn't occur on ABC daytime television between 1966 and 1971 i can't, for purposes of my own sanity, consider it series canon.

i'll add this if i may...

apart from the implausibility of it, and for reasons and i cannot quite put my finder on, the DS witchdraft trials always lack their intended impact.

it was the same story with victoria's trial in 1795. it was the weak link in a very strong storyline. there's always lots of people standing around yelling, jerry lacey in particular, and they're supposed to be the big climactic scenes of the storyline, but somehow they just fall flat. [ghost_huh]

speaking of victoria i was startled to hear her name mentioned several times during this plot in reference to the 1795 trials. by this point she was so long gone and forgotten it's almost like a hearing a name from another story completely. 1840 is a long way from the hammond foundling home.

besides cigarettes and a lighter julia's colossal purse carried all sorts of assortments and sundries...

sedatives, giant hypodermic needles, that whack-ugly "heirloom" medallion, perhaps a fresh pair of gloves should she wear one out fiendishly pulling them on and off.

it was a world unto itself.

i suppose this quentin was slightly more belligerent, and wore louder sportscoats, than all of the other quentins...

but to me the characters are completely interchangeable. nothing really differentiates one from any of the others. and i honestly think that was the writers/producers intention.
