‘Murder On The Orient Express’ Trailer: Kenneth Branagh Helms Star-Studded Agatha Christie Adaptation
Agatha Christie's famous detective Hercule Poirot hits the big screen once again. (http://www.indiewire.com/2017/09/murder-orient-express-trailer-kenneth-branagh-agatha-christie-adaptation-1201878110/)
Looks like it could easily be as much fun as the '74 version...

Johnny Depp's doomed gangster grills Kenneth Branagh's Hercule Poirot in second trailer for Murder on the Orient Express (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-4907184/Johnny-Depp-doomed-Murder-Orient-Express.html)
"The preview prominently featured Johnny's former Dark Shadows castmate Michelle Pfeiffer, who replaced Angelina Jolie in the role of surly widow, Mrs. Hubbard.
'A real killer is right here. One of you people,' the 59-year-old Oscar nominee said, deflecting the blame.
'A man was rummaging around my cabin in the middle of the night.'"
And check out the stills of both Depp and Pfeiffer...
-
interesting Depp accepted the part of the victim. as anyone familiar with the format of "whodunnits" knows they get killed off roughly at the halfway point and the second act is the investigation and solution of the mystery.
it's an important but small role.

I've been so busy lately that I didn't get to check out the Sunday paper's flyers until today, and what should I discover but MotOE on the cover of Parade Magazine. And what's nice is that the article and photos are also on Parade's Web site:

I hadn't known Derek Jacobi is in it - I love him!! I looked up the cast and the 1974 film to see what his part is. The character wasn't in the earlier one. This group of pictures goes on to describe the parts, so apparently they are making some changes in it.

That's how I felt when I spotted Olivia Colman in the cast. Adored her in Broadchurch.

Jacobi's counterpart (as Ratchett's valet) in the 1974 movie was played by John Gielgud. For some reason, he was given a different last name for the earlier one (that was also different from the novel).

i'm reading some rather negative reviews from critics who CLEARLY do not understand the "all star" Christie formula...
a complaint being, among other things, the talented cast is given "too little to do" and amounts to little more than a "series of cameos".
however that is exactly how most of these play out. and everyone involved goes in knowing that. it is not a "star vehicle" for anyone other than whatever actor is portraying Poirot in that iteration. ALL of the suspects are smallish but colorful roles generally getting only a few minutes of individual screentime before the group gathers for the big reveal. and accordingly as the victim Depp receives even less as they are usually killed at roughly the halfway mark and the second act is the investigation/resolution of the mystery.
these romps are more about imaginative costuming, sets and art direction and exotic locations, peppered with these "all star" appearances, than individual "character development"

Video features Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Derek Jacobi, and Tom Bateman.

Sadly, michael c, I'm betting there are probably a lot of people reviewing the film (particularly on the Internet) who are completely unfamiliar with the previous versions, Christie's book, or even other works by Christie. Their loss...
One thing I thought was interesting is that Thursday night I went to check out a new mall in my area and while I was there I checked out its new movie complex to see if MotOE was going to open there. Not only was it going to be there on Friday, a person at a ticket counter told me there had already been multiple showings on Thursday even though it wasn't supposed to open officially until Friday...
Some friends and I do plan to see the film soon - but we'll go some weeknight when the complex will be less crowded...

Thanks for the additional info, Midnite!

‘Thor’ Reigns as ‘Daddy’s Home 2’ and ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ Score — Box Office

I saw it yesterday. It was entertaining enough, though I still much prefer the 1974 version. On the plus side, it was nice to see Johnny Depp and Michele Pfeiffer exchange dialogue again. On the down side, Kenneth Branaugh is hampered by a mustache that makes him look like the grandfather of Glenn Hughes of The Village People.
-
I'm going to see it tonight.
Funny enough, both the mustache and Kenneth Branaugh have gotten some great reviews so I'm looking forward to both...

“Murder on the Orient Express” Sequel “Death on the Nile” is Already a Go (http://www.tvovermind.com/movies/murder-orient-express-sequel-death-nile-already-go)
References Depp's work in the DS film...

that "article", quite literally, makes absolutely NO sense. it's an incoherent mess.
the 1937 novel Death on the Nile was "adapted as a television movie Murder on the Orient Express"????? what does that even mean? they are two separate stories. Christie wrote dozens of stand alone mysteries. they share a central character (Poirot) but none of them are "sequels" to any of the others. each story has a different plot and set of characters.
it also seems to be merging the two stories/films into one? i can't follow it.
i don't even understand what it's trying to say. are they making a new version of "Death on the Nile"? is that the takeaway? i could not make heads nor tails of this nonsense. [hall2_huh]
-
that "article", quite literally, makes absolutely NO sense. it's an incoherent mess.
I said the same thing to myself. [hall2_rolleyes]
are they making a new version of "Death on the Nile"? is that the takeaway?
Yes. And at least that part wouldn't be a surprise to anyone who's seen MotOE because at the end of that film Poirot is summoned to Egypt to investigate a death on the Nile, so they were already telegraphing that if there was going to be a sequel, Death on the Nile would be it.
-
at the end of the new version of MotOE? it didn't happen in the original.
even that makes NO SENSE either. Poirot is not "summoned" to Egypt to investigate a murder in DoTN. like most Christies the murder happens mid-story. the victim actually a living character for much of the story. Poirot is just conveniently "there" at the time of the murders and subsequently conducts an investigation. but he's not a police officer or detective "called in" to investigate an already committed crime. [hall2_huh]
-
Well, who knows if they might rework it? Maybe they plan to tell the events leading up to the murder in flashback as if Poirot hadn't already been there. Or maybe they'll just ignore the end of MotOE and do DotN the way it's normally set up. I suppose we'll see...

How Costumes Reveal Character in Oscar Contenders ‘Murder on the Orient Express’ and ‘Mudbound’
The contrast between rural clothing in "Mudbound" and fashionable costumes in "Murder on the Orient Express" couldn't be more revealing. (http://www.indiewire.com/2017/11/murder-on-the-orient-express-oscar-2017-costumes-mudbound-1201900365/)

Um, I've never seen any versions, and I didn't know he gets killed 1/2 way through.
Anywho, this reminds me of early 2000s; alot of stars, not Leading Actor, Leading Actress, Supporting....blah blah.
Think of "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past", and many others. I like this format alot.
Patti
-
and at what point in the film would you guess the victim of a "whodunnit" mystery gets killed? 1/3 of the way through? or 1/4 of the way through? or maybe 2/16ths of the way through?
