Title: OT>Let's Talk About........IT
Post by: Patti Feinberg on August 10, 2002, 01:44:15 AM
Okay..."opinions are like...."
I think we all know that one ;)

So now boys & girls, I come to you, my friends, to ask for an opinion.

Regular phone-line modem just aint doing the trick any more...more $$$; is it time to go

cable?
broadband?
smoke signal? ;)

Keep in mind, that not everything is available throughout the country; I'm thinkin' the ONLY 2 cable ISPs are:
Comcast [puke]
Verizon (no one has an 'opinion' around here about them, the 8-9 people I know who have digital/on-line modems (is that right?), have Comcast [puke] and the service is iffy).

[greed] I'm poor white trash, so, does anyone know a good deal?[greed]

Also...sorta in a different vein...my computer is 7 years old; will it be throwing good money [greed] after bad (bandaid on cancer?)??

So boys & girls, since most of you are uh, just a teeny bit more 'computer literate' (geek) ;) than me (and I hope,
[shadow=red,left,300]laughing all the way to the bank,[/shadow] give me s'il vous plait your opinions and facts AND experiences (I'm assuming ;D at least 1-2 people on this board may be on their 2nd company).

I'm so clueless, but, hey, I'm also Tommy's Mommy :)

Patti, all I can say is that we are more than happy with RoadRunner service here in NYS. I know that it is not available everywhere but after I compared AOL & separate phone line, it averaged out pretty much the same: $50 per month.

Our phone lines are free and Internet connection is FAST.

As for a computer, we finally had to unload our 8 year old Packard-Bell after 2 upgrades. My brother, the computer nerd, said not to bother again; that we needed more power and it was cheaper to buy a new comp.

So we bought a Dell Home Computer. We switched the DVD player with a CD burner(we have a 20 yo who downloads music like crazy) and added a Lexxmark copy/scanner/printer. It came with Windows XP. My husband bought it for me for Xmas last year and I think the whole thing came to $1200 which was alot cheaper than when we bought our daughter's college laptop and printer.

I hope this helps.

It isn't that I don't WANT to answer you, I just am not a good enough geek to! I do suspect that your computer's age may be a big part of your problem. I know when I lived in the styx I had a second line (which I wish I had now) and a local ISP that was usually satisfactory. But, I've never been able to afford a really great connection.

I haven't been all that thrilled with AOL, so I am switching to Cox Communications high speed internet service, they're my digital cable provider. It also will eliminate the need for my second phone line. Billing will be easier too, since it will just be added on to my monthly bill from Cox. There's not much difference in price. Cox is coming over on Friday to take care of everything. I can't wait!  :)

Wahoo DSL! All you faster Cable people just suck! LOL  ;) AOL is *theeeeee* slowest service in the entire world, I open NOTHING in AOL, it's IE all the way!!! ^_^! When we first got DSL, nobody billed us for like 14 months, so it was freeeee until they found out, but then they didn't charge us for the missed months, so it was KEWL! Now I think it's like $40/month...maybe it went up 2 $60 ... idk, I don't pay the bills [thankfully!!!] I still want T1, tho!! LOL My dad just laughs....  ::)

I'm pleased with my new cable high speed data, it's really the way to go, it sure gives AOL a boost too, but I don't use AOL for this board anymore, too many problems.  8)

We love our Optimum Cable connection.  Not only is it super-fast, but frees up our phone line.  People could NEVER reach us because we were on the net so many hours a day.  We pay $35 per month, but it's worth it.  A second phone line would have cost more, and not been nearly as fast.

You really need a good firewall with the cable connection, because you are, in essence, always on the computer.  We use ZoneAlarm, which was free.

Love, Robin
