A couple of months ago, several people cited a movie called Freaks as one of the most frightening they'd ever seen. Their discussions really made me curious. If anybody else is interested in seeing it, this controversial film will air on TCM this Friday, Aug. 30 (check your local listings.)

If you've never seen this classic (which I'm awaiting on DVD to replace my MGM VHS copy), please DO check it out. I first saw it in Oxford, Ohio in 1976 at an all-night movie marathon at a tiny Oxford theater that also was shwoing "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" and "Mad Love." ("Freaks" was shown between these other two films. I think my friend and I got back to his dorm room at 6 am. ;))
"Freaks" is sometimes unsettling, but it makes this gay quasi-liberal even more empathetic to those who have no control over their physical/emotional destiny. That said, the movie is also very uplifting when one considers that the "underdogs" take responsibility for themselves and "undo" those with undeserved power.
Watch it--and then let's hear what you have to say, please.

Thank you Prof. Stokes! I was just going to ask Luciaphil when it was coming on because I had remembered she mentioned it coming on again near the end of August.
I had seen the movie years ago and it really did "freak" me out sort to speak, but it is a classic and worth seeing (if you're not too faint at heart) and Im definetely going to tape it this time!

Glad I saw your post in time, Prof. Stokes -- I had been curious about this after reading about it on the board earlier. Wow, what a freaky movie! I wasn't surprised to hear in the commentary afterward that people left the theater in droves during the original run. It probably was worth sticking with it to see the end, but I'm glad I didn't tape the thing!

I'm not surprised either, I'm glad they shortened it. The end was pretty weird. The man with no legs, reminded me of someone I knew who lost his legs in a motorcycle accident, he would run with his hands, fast too.
