Post by: MsCriseyde on January 20, 2007, 06:25:04 PM
Here's an article about a couple who are having a secret passage installed in their home. They're DS fans.

I doubt they'll be able to keep this a secret, since there is this article written about it and like the article said, they won't be able to resist showing it to friends.

There are some houses in my area that have passageways and also a a ony way mirror

That way you can watch your guests.

What a great article! Thanks so much for sharing! I've always wanted a secret passage in my home too, and maybe someday I'll get one just like these people.

I actually was watching some talk show a couple weeks back and they had a woman on there that lived in a house where you walk right in the front door and the first thing you see is the bathroom. If the door is open you can see right into the bathroom, and if it's closed, well, most people assumed it was a coat closet. So this inventive gal repainted her door and put thin shelves on the front with fake books, and made it look just like a bookcase. Nobody could tell the difference unless they were shown.

Not exactly a secret passage, but pretty close!  And just think, you'd get to say "The bathroom? Oh it's right there behind the bookcase." :D

Karlenfan had a secret room in the house she grew up in!  You had to open the bookcase in the living room to get to it.  ;)  It was hella cool!  ;)

Just think you can get you reading material before you go in.

Even better would be a two-way mirror.  [wink2]

I actually built a secret room in a house that I lived in twenty years ago.  The place was an old farm house that belonged to my grandfather. The house was in my family for more than one hundred years at the time. I lived in the house for four years and was given permission to do as I liked with the place. On the second floor at the end of a hallway was a big walk in closet. I built a false wall four feet into the closet leaving a small hidden room eight foot by nine foot in size. The wall was constructed from plywood, 2"x4" and 1"x 8". The wall was made to look like three panels with one of them opening inward. When I painted the smaller closet the panels blended in perfectly. I did this within the first few days that I was in the house and my two children at the time had no idea that the room existed. It was used to hide Christmas presents mostly.

Early 70s, DS times (I did hurry home for it after school), we lived in a 40s house, with a closed-off staircase that you could only look into by getting on top of something high outside and looking in through the window.  the place also had a dumb waiter that was closed off.

I'd love to have a big old house and create my own Addams Family-esque environment, odd alarming objects and passageways.

I used to always tell my younger brother that there was a secret room in the mausoleum out in the cemetery behind our house and that if he ever went in there he'd find a vampire. That was just fine when he was a scared little kid, but then he got a bit older and braver and I had to change my story real quick to keep him from trying to find the room for himself. I guess that's what I get for trying to give him nightmares.

Personally, I'd never be able to have a secret room in my house because I couldn't keep it a secret. It'd be more like the "Formerly Secret Room."

So... is there a vampire?   What kind of tools will I need to break in?

LMAO Mark! We have (count em) FOUR of those secret rooms...

I've also always wanted to live in a big Old House, Magnus! I love to tour old mansions and look at all the big luxurious rooms and imagine what type of goings on happened there way back when it was a hopping place. That's one of my FAVORITE things in the world to do. To actually own one of those suckers one day, should I be rich and wealthy and all that, I'd just die. And I wouldn't buy one that didn't have at least one secret passage or secret room.

Years ago, my parents lived in a Revolutionary War-era home on Long Island. It had lots of secret passages and rooms, built, so they were told, so that the family could hide from British soldiers and/or Indians. In any event, they swore the place was haunted -- strange smells (mostly roses, my mother said), sounds of footsteps, etc. In one of the rooms in the basement, they had hung some hams or something. Guess it was like a "cold" cellar. In any event, meat would go missing. They decided to put flour on the floor to at least catch some footprints. There never were any, although the meat would be missing. Often, they'd come home and find their clothes strewn all over the place, dresser drawers open. Their dog refused to go upstairs, no matter what. One day, they went out. When they returned, they heard the dog yipping in fright from upstairs. Poor thing had been locked in a closet. They never knew how that happened. Spooky!

I'm CONVINCED animals can see dead ppl like that kid in The Sixth Sense!  My cat Louie will be sound asleep, then wake up all of the sudden and look intently at NOTHING, but his eyes are HUGE, like something that's scaring him is there.  Sometimes he'll also then bolt from the room in apparent fear.  Creeps me out every time!  :o

Isn't it wild when something like that happens?  [scrdy]

Animals are very astute with feelings and other things. Have you ever heard someone say that a dog can tell if you're scared of it, and knows it has the upper hand? Well that's definitely true. And animals can sense the dead, I just know it. Otherwise you wouldn't get all those stories about dogs standing and barking at the corner when there's nothing there.

Maybe cats are just eccentric and imaginative.  We know they create their own fun by batting inanimate objects back and forth, pretending they're alive.    They could be pretending to see things that aren't there.   We make TV shows; maybe this is what they do.   It gets boring being indoors all day.

Of course, the fact that this might be explainable in a non-supernatural way does not necessarily mean there isn't something supernatural going on.

I'm never sure if "supernatural" means anything.  If we were all to find out ghosts were real, ghosts would then become part of the "natural" world for us.

Well, here's another creepy animal story for you. Years ago, I spent summers in upstate New York (where I now live). We always visited with a family my father knew from his work. My father's friend was younger than my father and still lived at home with his parents. When the guy's father was ill and taken to the hospital and dying, the family dog was very upset. One night, he just kept howling and howling. Turns out, that was the night the man died! You bet animals can sense stuff like that.

Indeed animals can sense when things are wrong. The morning my twin sister passed away, one of my mom's cats wouldn't leave her alone. He jumped on top of her and just layed there. He had never done anything like that before. He was also my sister's favorite cat.

One animal story. I had a large dog walk with me once when a car was following me. At onee point the dog was there and then it wasn't. (And I wasn't on anything).  Also I think that most spirits watch over us. I have no fear of them. But I have only meet nice ones.

No secret rooms in my house, just dust and over stuffed closets.

In response to this, and an addendum to my earlier post about Louie and ghosts, I'm also convinced that one of the ghosts in my place is my ferret Atticus!  The pet psychic told me he visits me often, and Louie will chase after something (in addition to sometimes running away) and I can just see Atticus tormenting my poor cat, and LOVING every minute of it!  ;)

I want a secret room in my house!

My Great Aunt and Uncle live in a huge old house that's been in her family since Christ was a corporeal. And I mean for like hundreds of years. Supposedly there's a secret passageway that runs between the dining room and the kitchen. I've never seen it though and haven't been there in over a decade so I can't remember if the wall thickness was different. She had extensive grounds and even a hedge maze! Her family is LOADED, my great Uncle married into her family. I was always WAY more interested in going up to the attic and poking around but never got to do that either.

As for Spirit animals and such, the night we moved into my current house, which was Halloween incidentally, I woke up about 2am to see a huge black dog standing in my doorway, silhouetted by the hallway light. From it's ears and face I could tell it was a Great Dane. I looked at it and then rolled over and went back to sleep, I just had the feeling it was looking in to check me out and nothing more. I haven't seen it since.
