Ron Sproat mentioned in an interview back in the 80's that the original plan to tell the story of Barnabas was through books and ghosts.

Perhaps this meant that they planning to stick with the original version of events mentioned during 1966-1967, but then decided to tell it in a time travel story which condenced everything to a 5 month period.

Though if they went with the story told by books and ghosts, it would have been interesting to see the characters thorugh the years..perhaps it was a span of 10 to 15 years.

I always thought it would've been interesting if they would have told the 1795/96 storyline without
Vicki being metaphysically thrust back to that era. For example, just having Barnabas begin to tell Julia about those events - screen swirls and swirls - and, voila, there we are for the next several months. Alexandra Moltke could have just played Phyllis Wick. Of course, then Vicki would not have met Peter Bradford and blah-blah-blah, you know the rest.
They could have used Ben Stokes' diary as a vehicle for transport to 1795. It was used during the 1841 storyline. -VAM

Oh, Gerard, if only you'd been there to make that suggestion. Think of what we would have been spared! ;)

As well as in 1897. :)

WOW! I just love combing the archives on this site.  I find new information like this to be such a treat.  I have been in fandom for 17 years and I mostly thought I had heard it all. Very neat indeed to know that the writers were thinking of going this route.  Perhaps this would be a good way to retell the story in the new film or a DS REBOOT!?
If you like DS and want to have a fun  on a Facebook page that is open to all forms of DS and doesn't allow childish behavior like some groups; come on over to DIAESD! You do have to ask to be invited and I will approve you.
