This is a really fascinating thread, with which I am finally catching up.  I don't think I ever read that novel, although we got Scholastic paperbacks at school and I remember the excitement of ordering the books and finally having them arrive.

"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live" is of course originally a quote from the King James translation of the Bible, and I thought Angelique did quote it in one of the scenes where she was scheming to have Vicki framed as the Witch in 1795.  I still don't have the 1795 DVD sets and I gave the videotapes away, so I have no way of checking right now.  The scene I remember has Ang going on to gloat that a Witch found guilty will be reduced to "ashes"--or maybe fire--but isn't the scene where she uses spellcraft to create a spectral fire that drives Vicki out of her hiding place and into Trask's clutches.

Philippe, in certain areas of France and Germany, the Witch-craze in the late Sixteenth and early Seventeenth centuries reached the point where hundreds of people were accused and tried in the space of a very few years.  And I believe it was all heavily localized, as was the case in Massachusetts in 1692-93.  So some districts were heavily afflicted by the craze and others had minimal activity.  To this day the cause of all of it remains obscure.  The study of Witchcraft in early modern Europe has become a MAJOR cottage industry amongst academic historians in the past quarter century, oddly enough.

Didn't Geoffrey Scott beat out the drawing-room doors for Most Wooden Performance in the entire history of DS in a certain competition?

Some of the day players were pretty wooden.  Remember that hapless mortician who called one day and asked to see Mr. Jonathan?

I thought I'd heard of all the DS related books out there, but this one totally passed me by.

Would love to hear a review of the book, if anyone on the Boards here owns it.

That column had me more relieved than ever that I don't watch TV any more.

On the other hand, yesterday I saw a trailer for the new Eastwick series and Paul Gross is looking mighty, mighty fine...

Hope it all goes safely and smoothly.

Very sorry to hear this, Annie.  A close friend of mine was laid off where I work.  He's still looking for a job and it was four months ago.  It's quite a haul.

Best of luck and I second Lydia's thought about getting out and seeing your friends.  It will help with your morale if nothing else.

At least they saved the best for last.

So, Barnabas Collins' inner monologue sounds just like a Valley Girl.  And he always seemed so ... courtly!  *wink*

For those who doubt the accuracy of Markyboo's scenario above, check out this newish BBC series (part of it aired on NBC last summer, I am told), Merlin.  It's technically yet another spin on the old King Arthur legends but EVERYONE, including Arthur, Guinevere and Merlin himself, is a teenager!  Anthony Stewart Head plays Uther, Arthur's natural father in the old legends who was supposed to have died when Arthur was still a baby and was given to loyal knight Sir Ector to foster as a brother to his own son Kai.

The Stan Hywet Hall would make a fabulous new Collinwood, MB.  Great choice!

Poor Ian Somerhalder with his fried hair and botox difficulties...

Another possibility is the family dinner party with Laura in early 1967.

I wish they had done more scenes like that...

Calendar Events / Announcements '09 II / Happy Birthday Grayson Hall

Fans, Today is Grayson Hall's birthday!

Here's a glass of very dry sherry to a rare lady--"gutsy broad" to some, "Earth Mother" to others, epitome of wit, sophistication and glamour to her staunchly loyal "Legionnaires"...

We miss you, Darling.  Here's to you and your special day!

There's a scene early in PT 1970 where Hoffman has prepared dinner for Mr. and Mrs. Collins in the Drawing Room.  I don't recall salt and pepper shakers on the little tray, but they might have been there.  I would guess that these items might have been acquired originally for use in 1897 but I'm trying to recall when anyone was shown having a meal that involved a proper table setting?

What a wonderful gift.  However, in the build-up, I was expecting something related to Mrs. Isles--perhaps an autographed photo from her?

Best wishes,

G.

Many Thanks, Doctor and K-9, for sharing what you have here about the new discs.  Too bad MPI couldn't be bothered to mix and master the clips properly.  Par for the course, I'm afraid.  Glad you got such a good deal on the discs!

Best,

G.

I checked DVD Talk a couple of days ago to see if there was a review, but didn't see one.

I might check these out via Netflix some day just out of curiosity.
