Just saw a photo of Johnny on one of the foreign fan sites- he was at Tim's event in LA last weekend after all.  The pic was from a facebook page but I am firewalled from there here at work, but at any rate he is clean-shaven.  That answers that question!  [ghost_smiley]  I still think he's been filming before this- just no proof.

It'd be great if pix of Johnny, Chloe and the others in costume would surface.  We've been very spoiled with many of Johnny's recent films- Public Enemies, The Rum Diary, The Tourist and even Pirates 4 were all done mostly or partly on location and we got gobs of photos during filming- sometimes as early as the first day!  Of course, Tim is much more private but we usually start seeing at least a few pix while filming is still going on; I'm prepared to have to wait at least another month or more, though.

So... at least we know that they will be in at least one scene alone together, for whatever that's worth  [ghost_smiley]

LdyAnne, I think Miss Winthrop was referring to a couple of the other photos in the flicker photostream that I had posted a link to one page up:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/28940296@N05/5776502499/in/photostream/

I'm not sure if that church and gravestones are related to DS, however.  They might be, but it's just labeled as "Selborne Church".  The others are clearly labeled as the DS set.

Miss Winthrop, I think there will be more additions to the cast as time goes on.  For past Depp films that I have followed, sometimes more actors/characters are added as the filming goes on (they may have been cast already but they just weren't announced right away), and sometimes a whole lot more are added just before the films comes out.  So don't be surprised if we gradually hear more and more detail.  I kinda look like a blond/grey version of Mrs. Johnson and I did play a maid in a high school play, so I'd volunteer for the part!   [ghost_wink]

As for 3D, everywhere I look lately- Depp sites, Pirates sites, film buff sites- there is a backlash against 3D.  People don't want to pay extra, and a lot of folks hate wearing the glasses.  Personally, I was wowed by the 3D in Avatar, but the other 2 or 3 films I've seen in 3D, I could've done without it.  I wouldn't mind a film here or there using it- big epic spectacles or animated films, but most films don't need it.  DS really doesn't need it, and I am glad they won't use it.

There is a new Flickr photo of set construction for DS- it's starting to look like a real mansion  [ghost_smiley]

I dunno, I don't trust the idea that this hotel employee is being "disciplined" too much.  Call me a skeptic, but you know what they say about "no publicity is bad publicity"?  Stories like this pop all the time, and it's to get attention and publicity- for the town (or hotel) in question, or for the newspapers or online sites that publish it.  Get used to this- Johnny is sighted everywhere, all the time, even if he is already known to be someplace else [ghost_grin]  And the casual reader is never going to really care about any one story or how true it is.  Good rule of thumb- if there is a photo, it's true.  Even then, sometimes you have to look closely because there are a lot of impersonators out there  [ghost_tongue2]

Whoa, I love that portrait, I wish I could have it!  [ghost_smiley]   The pic in the foreground looks to me like a photoshoot Johnny did with a photographer named John Huba during Chocolat filming.  It's probably this one- I will give a link because it's kind of large and I don't know what the size limit is here:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/MadScntst/photographers/huba%20john/hubad7.jpg

He's pretty much the opposite of menacing in Chocolat (ie., eye candy  [ghost_wink] ), so it's the photoshopped eyes that give him the cool vamp vibe.  (Incidentally, his hair is long there- it's tied back in a ponytail, which is kinda how I was hoping to see Johnny, but oh well!)  I also think the facial hair could  be a very cool touch.  Johnny is usually clean-shaven in Tim's films (the exception being parts of Ed Wood where he has the teensiest bit of moustache) so it's time for a change!  [ghost_wink]  Whenever any new candid photos of Johnny might pop up in the media now after filming has started, we will get an idea of whether he's clean-shaven or not.

And yeah, I know a great Brazilian fan forum/site with some very nice folks on it, so yes, I think that there are lots of Deppfans there!

Apologies if this has already been posted- I didn't see it.  Joseph will be starring in a new Seth Rogan comedy called 50/50.  Normally I don't care much for Seth, but I love Joseph and this one does look a little... different.

Here is the trailer:

I didn't see the '04 pilot and don't know much about Jessica Chastain, but I've been hearing a ton about Tree Of Life, which already seems to be in the Oscar race.  However, I just saw the trailer to Take Shelter, which is another movie she is in that just won a prize at Cannes, and it looks really strange and very cool.  These two films seem like quite the double coup for her, and I'll be keeping an eye out for both.

Good question, Neil.  Seems a little weird to me, too.  I will have to dig out my copy of Sleepy Hollow and listen to either the commentary and/or the "making of" featurette, because I seem to recall Tim Burton telling some reasons why he prefers to build sets over shooting on location.  For SH they built a whole town of facades!  And all the other "exteriors" were actually done indoors at Pinewood.  He *does* sometimes use existing locations, such as the mansion used at the beginning of Alice In Wonderland, and I think the factory (or was it something else??) for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was "real."  But maybe he just prefers to have control over his own creations, for some reason.  Also, in the case of Sweeney Todd, that was all built too but in that case they seemed to be deliberately going for something that was not quite realistic-looking- almost hyper-real, in a way.  Well, if I remember to check out my SH DVD and it sheds any light on this, I'll let y'all know.

Depp's part in the film should wrap before actual shooting ends because Thomas McDonell, who'll play the young Barnabas, has said that all the stuff with him is what's being shot last. He's also the one that said he wouldn't start shooting until the fall. But then, he also said that filming had begun weeks before it actually had, so his time frame for when he's expected to shoot could also be off.  [ghost_wink]

Ah yes, good point. That said, Johnny is a producer this time, so I'm not sure if that'd mean he'd like to stick around at all for the end or not.  It's possible he'd leave things in Tim's hands because he trusts him so much.  We'll see!

^^^ Oop, sorry, Sweeney Todd started early Feb.  Production dates Feb 5-May 11, so just over 3 months.  That didn't include recording the vocals, but it did include a brief delay when Johnny's daughter became seriously ill.  So 3 months is possible, even for Tim Burton  [ghost_smiley]

That sounds about right.  Johnny has expressed interest in doing extensive promotions for The Rum Diary, and there was even talk of a tour of a few college campuses.  TRD comes out in late Oct., but there are several film fests in Sept so I'd imagine the promos to get sandwiched in between somewhere.  It is a small film and he's producing, and he was also a dear friend of the author, Hunter S. Thompson, so I think he would want to be finished with DS so that he could devote his full time to that. Then, The Lone Ranger is also tentatively scheduled for fall, so I'd think DS might be done by Aug-Sept, but that's just a guess.

Edited to add- should've mentioned that Johnny's films with Tim have tended to shoot for at least 3 to 4 months.  I think that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory stretched to even 5 months.  Sweeney Todd went from end of Feb to May of 2007, I think, and Alice most of the fall of... which year, 2008?

Yeah, I had noticed the math of the years too (one page back) and the numbers add up more satisfyingly, I think.  I'm getting a bit of a vibe similar to when they arrive in 1995 and find Collinwood in shambles- certainly not to that extreme but the same kind of feeling of despair.

I think that Barnabas on the show was certainly a skirt chaser- I always got the impression in 1795 that Angelique wasn't the only dalliance- and then after he fell in love with Josette it was almost an excuse to chase everyone else because they "reminded" him of her.  But "playboy" sounds like this will be more overt than implied.  I definitely won't mind seeing Johnny put his moves on all the ladies  [ghost_wink]

Agh, I've been curious about this, and sorry to hear there hasn't been any progress on this yet.  I'm hoping that now that the film production is in full swing that this will now get moving, too.  I wish you all the best, Darren!

I'm so glad that this is a quiet week for me at work [ghost_grin]  I've been mulling a few things about the plot synopsis.  Ah, as I've been typing this, there have been some more posts, and I realize that perhaps I should include spoiler warnings just to be safe.
[spoiler]
1) I guess the inclusion of Thomas McDonnell now makes sense, as there will presumably be a scene(s) in 1752.  This also means that there will be a Joshua and Naomi-- will they do the duplicate casting trick that they did for the show, or will there be separate actors cast?  I'm guessing the latter, but who knows?
2) Counting ahead 20 years, it's a little interesting to me that this part of the film will now take place pre-Revolutionary War.  I don't know why I find that interesting, but I do :)  But this makes the math fit very nicely by counting ahead exactly 200 more years.
[/spoiler]

Don't think that spoilers are needed for these two points ;)

3) Did they spell "Brouchard" wrong, or did they change her name?
4) I'm still enjoying the playboy angle ;)
