Thanks for all the links, Sara!  I am firewalled from Facebook during the day, and I dare not click the first link, but I appreciated being able to see the photos for now.  Mostly very cool!

To neil- kinda sorta.   I don't remember where I read this, and I don't know if it was a rumor so much as a fan wish/speculation, but I remember reading

[spoiler]That Chloe Moretz' Carolyn character may have been aged down in order to be a mix of both Carolyn and Amy Jennings, and in that regard, the "secret" that we have heard she has is that there could be some kind of werewolf tie-in.  And I suppose if that were to be the case, there could be a hint about Quentin, as well.[/spoiler]

So, I guess we'll see.

Thanks for the heads up on Total Film, Cousin_Barnabas. I need to do some errands tonight, and conveniently there's a Barnes & Noble in the vicinity of where I'm going. I'll definitely have to check to see if the issue is in yet or, if like Empire, it won't be available in the US for a few weeks yet.

57 days 8 hours 18 minutes 48 seconds until the day the Depp/Burton Dark Shadows is released(ET)!!

In my experience, the UK publications don't get here to the US until about 3 weeks later (it may be sooner if you live in NY or LA, but I'm in the DC suburbs).  It's worth a chance to stop by B&N, though, if you can- you never know!  There have been a few times when I've REALLY wanted a UK mag, and been able to buy it on eBay.  Even if it takes a week to send from the UK, I have the peace of mind of having it and not missing it at the local bookstore, especially since my closest bookstore used to be Border's, which has now gone under (the building is vacant, at the moment).  But it may not be practical for most people to use eBay, factoring in the postage expense.  Anyway, I add my thanks to Cousin for the heads-up!

P.S. I haven't heard any of the feedback mentioning any drag queen sequences.

As I said earlier in the non-spoiler thread, I am a longtime fan of both DS (I used to run home from school...) and Burton/Depp.  While I agree with much of what y'all are saying here with regard to disappointment in hearing that this is pretty much a comedy, I would personally not go so far as to say it's sickening.  If it's not your/our cup of tea, that's fine, but it doesn't destroy the OS or the fans of the OS.  I will be seeing the film on opening weekend regardless, and if I don't like it, then so be it, but at worst, it'll be a disappointment for what could have been.  It won't change how I feel about DS.

Depp bought the rights, so he made the film that he envisioned, and for him, this meant bringing Burton on board.  I truly believe that he is honoring DS in his own way, and I really don't feel that he had any intention of trivializing the show.  Here is a question, though-- Jim Pierson was involved in this production, so what is his responsibility in all of this??  If anyone would serve as a spokesman for what Dan Curtis Productions would want, isn't it him?  Now, it could be that he was against the film's direction and got vetoed.  But it'd be interesting to learn later on how much input he actually had.  (Though if he was against the film, I doubt it would ever be made public).  For most other films, a lot has been written about both Burton and Depp wanting to honor the source material.  Ed Wood's widow visited the set of that film and was asked what she thought, Sondheim was involved with Sweeney Todd, and they spoke with the family of Roald Dahl for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and so on.  Maybe this time was different, I dunno.  But I just can't believe they would have deliberately wanted to thumb their nose at the OS.

Finally, I disagree with those who seem to think that all Burton/Depp films are silly parodies.  Maybe this one will be, but I count Sweeney Todd among my favorite horror films, and it was anything but silly or disrespectful.

The small amount of feedback I've seen on the Depp discussion boards from attendees of the screening has been extremely positive- I haven't even noticed one negative comment.  So perhaps those who think that the film may not play as well to DS fans as to other audiences may be right on.  Hmm.  I will say that as someone who straddles the line between both worlds, I, too, woke up a little disappointed this morning to hear so many mentions of how funny it is.  Don't get me wrong, all along I've been fine with the use of humor in the film. I've probably said here many times already (so apologies for repeating myself) that both Sleepy Hollow and Sweeney Todd, both Depp/Burton films, have a lot of humor but are definitely *not* comedies, and the latter in particular is very, very dark.  However, I don't want to be laughing all the way through the film, whereas fans who are less familiar with DS may be fine with that.

It's strange how just yesterday, seeing the brief glimpses of the trailer had me feeling so pleased, because I thought the look and the tone was perfect.  But now I'm a bit concerned again.  I'm just hoping that for me, anyway, it may just be a matter of adjusting my expectations a little bit, and I'll probably still enjoy the film.  I do understand where some of you are coming from, though.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy!!  (That'll teach me to stop off at the grocery store on my way home from work!  I could've been home earlier and watching this!   [snow_cheesy]  )   Thanks for the screen caps, MB!  This looks GREAT, to me!  And it looks like there will be some good lusty stuff going on, too [snow_cool]  I can't wait to see the whole thing!   Woo-hoo!!!

323
Yeah, I was about to say, "but trailers aren't rated!"  Good thing I clicked on to the next page before posting!  Actually, my understanding is that we only have 2 types of trailers in the US- green band and red band.  The vast, vast majority of trailers are green band- the ones that say "General Audiences."  This is so that even if the film is rated R, the trailer itself can be put in front of a movie of any rating (though obviously, they probably won't put a trailer for an R rated movie in front of a kid's G-rated film  [snow_cheesy]  Red band trailers contain restricted material, but they aren't that common; 21 Jump Street had one because they wanted to show some of the raunch, and sometimes horror films have them, but I don't think they bother in most cases.

I am ASSUMING that the film itself won't be rated PG  [snow_rolleyes]  In fact, have we gotten a definite rating yet?  I think that the consensus has been that it will be PG-13, though I have hoped for an R.  ETA- according to Box Office Mojo, it's "not yet rated."  But I seem to recall Zanuck or someone remarking that it was aiming for PG-13.  Did I imagine that?

324
Sorry folks, by saying "if this is so", I didn't mean that I doubted it was so!  [snow_wink]  I guess I meant "this being the case..."  Anyway:

Bad, bad MB!  [embb]

LOL!   [snow_clown]

Of course, now I'm wondering if the trailer will show up in theaters on Friday?

On IMDb, someone was just speculating about The Hunger Games.  Hmm.  Also, I really doubt it would debut with 21 Jump Street because the genres are so different, but Johnny does have a cameo in the movie and of course there is a lot of history there, so, ya never know.  (It's not WB, though- is The Hunger Games?)

BREAKING:

Trailer debuts on ELLEN Thursday!

http://ellen.warnerbros.com/2012/03/ewan_mcgregor_-_thursday_march_15_2012.php

Well, thank goodness!!!  And thanks Cousin for the news!!  If this is so, perhaps we may even get a little sneak peak beforehand, like today or tomorrow (like sometimes, Entertainment Tonight or similar show will show a few seconds of something that will debut a day or two later).  I still want a poster, though  [snow_angry]    (Greedy me!)  [snow_cheesy]

I'm with you, MB, and I would further say that my interpretation of Tim's words is that he refuses to put the film into a neat little box.  If he brands it as something, "comedy", "gothic" or whatever, then fifty thousand bloggers and entertainment sites will pick up on it and repeat it until everyone treats it as gospel, and I think that he is deliberately refusing to do that.  I guess I could be wrong, though  [snow_cheesy]

As for KLS, I didn't really see a problem in her answer.  She is pointing out some differences from the OS, for instance that Victoria rather than Maggie is the Josette figure (and of course, that is a big point from her perspective, for obvious reasons  [snow_smiley] ), and that there is more emphasis on Barnabas adjusting to a new era, as we all already learned.  So she's obviously not going to say that the movie is completely faithful to the series, because it's not.  Also, she doesn't want to give away everything because she wants people to buy her book to read more.  I do agree with Phil that there is going to be a bit of a spin factor, but that was going to be true no matter what- everyone involved with the franchise has a bias, and that's understandable.

I'm actually wondering if people attending the test screening will have to sign confidentiality agreements? I have no idea if that's general practice or not.

I've never had the privilege of attending a test screening, but I do believe it is common to have to sign a confidentiality agreement.  However, I believe that people are allowed to give general impressions and overall opinions- just no details.

Prof. Stokes, I'm so sorry to hear you won't be able to attend.  Anyway, we'll soon hear if we hear any feedback from the attendees.

Adding my thoughts and best wishes, too.  I look forward to this, especially NODS.  Cheers to Darren!

I'm at work, which firewalls us from Facebook, so I can't read the description there right now.  But the Barnabas "and his run ins with various monsters, witches, werewolves and ghosts" tagline has been around for a long time, and not just on IMDb, but other blogs and entertainment sites.  I think it was just a generic blurb that someone dreamed up to give people a general idea; I never took it literally.

Prof. Stokes, I'm so pleased to hear that you got passes for the screening!   [snow_smiley]  I hope you will give your thoughts.  (And darn, I wish I lived on the other coast!  [snow_wink] )  I have a friend who also knows 2 LA Depp fans who will be attending, so I hope that after tomorrow, we will have a better general idea of what to expect.

Initially, the recent release of several new photos was placating me to some extent about the fact that we haven't seen a trailer yet.  But we REALLY should've had a poster by now, at least.  Grrrrr.

Thanks for the "weirdest characters" poll link.  It's hard to choose!  [snow_smiley]  Slight nitpick- Johnny's character from the film Benny & Joon is *not* named Benny; Benny is Joon's brother, played by Aidan Quinn, and Johnny's character is Sam.  That is a common mistake  [snow_angry]  (Kind of like how some people want to spell Barnabas with a "u" )

I don't want to get too far off topic regarding the Tonto/Lone Ranger photo, but since it's been brought up, apparently some Depp fans have done research and seen that this makeup and headpiece is actually a realistic Native American look; I've only had time to skim so I can't tell you the exact details of which tribe(s) or whatnot, but there's been a photo of a Native American man posted that portrays a similar headpiece and very similar makeup.  I was shocked at the photo at first, but in a way I'm pleased that they didn't go with the caricature-ish stereotypical Native American look.  I'm actually very shocked that there has been a photo released *this* soon, but the photo was released by Jerry Bruckheimer himself on his Twitter account this morning, and let's just say that Jerry Bruckheimer and Tim Burton have VASTLY different ways of handling an upcoming film.
