^ Yikes, well I was busy at 1, and I figured these things always run behind a little anyway, and I only just tuned into the London Premiere live stream about 10 minutes ago.  The stream *was* working fine, but sadly, they've pulled the plug already!  I saw a glimpse of Helena being interviewed, but that was before I got my earphones (didn't want to turn the volume up here in the lab).  Then a few minutes later I heard a brief snippet with Tim, and then they said they had to sign off.  I only saw a glimpse of Johnny signing autographs and don't know if they got to interview him on the live stream or not- surely there will be clips popping up later, though.

Thanks for the info about CBS This Morning, MB.  I put the show on, but I had to leave for work at 8.  Just before the end of the first hour, they were teasing who was coming up on the show, and when the hostess said, "You'll never guess who's in the green room", I turned to the TV because I assumed she was going to say Depp and Burton (even though I wouldn't be able to stay to watch, I was hoping to catch a small glimpse).  But it wasn't, and actually if I'd been thinking straight it wouldn't have made sense anyway, because they were surely in London by then.  Any segment they do on the show will be pre-taped, so I can only assume that they didn't have room in the show today :(  But anyway, I'm glad I didn't miss anything, because I've been in meetings all morning and this is the first time I saw that the CBS This Morning didn't happen.  Hopefully another day- I should be able to leave for work a little later tomorrow and Fri.

So, today is the London premiere, and supposedly there will be live streaming of the event starting at 1 p.m. EDT.  Here is a link- I don't know whether it'll work or not, since apparently they also said that there would be live streaming from Grauman's and there wasn't.

BTW I loved the Kimmel segment last night.  The conversation was a little light on DS but at least they showed a nice clip (and since I've been avoiding most clips lately, it was new to me, other than the part that we saw in the trailers).  But I could sit and listen to Johnny talk about music all day, so for me, it was great to hear him talk about all the folks he's been jamming with lately  [ghost_cool]   But is it just me, or do they have even more commercials for Kimmel than even the usual barrage of commercials we usually have to endure??  During the break, I took a bathroom break, then got on Facebook and posted, then sat down and watched what seemed like another 5 minutes of commercials!  It got so that I almost thought they were never going to return to the show!  Oy  [ghost_wink]

And aw, geez, I just saw a video clip of the afterparty uploaded by Warner Brothers and thought, oh great!  But it's only a measly 15 seconds long.  You couldn't have given us a little more than that, WB?  [ghost_grin]  But this comes from someone who would love to have the entire set on video, if I couldn't be there myself!  Anyway, for what it's worth, No More Mr. Nice Guy:

The whole deal about whether or not Depp will replace Frid is, by itself, an illogical argument.  You can't replace another person.  You can do work like they did, maybe copy the manner in which it was displayed, but that's it.  Each work has to stand on its own.

Yeah, I think that you and I are in complete agreement about that.  Yet, I do kinda see the argument in one regard- whenever there's been more than one portrayal of a character/story, whether it be Barnabas Collins or Hamlet, there is bound to be a discussion of who gave the "definitive" performance.  And some will always have a specific person in mind as an answer:  Jonathan Frid, Laurence Olivier, whatever.  And they may fear that that definitive portrayal may be forgotten or diluted by someone else's portrayal.  I can see where that is coming from, but I disagree- as you say, Nancy, each work can stand on its own and there can be more than one definitive performance, if they're both enjoyed.  Or there can even be a definitive performance and an alternative version, if you will.

Regarding reviews, I don't mean to say that I am reliant on reviews of a film, but I don't totally ignore them either.  I think of them as one of many tools to deciding whether a film interests me, others being the director, the cast, the genre, the story (including articles giving background on it), the trailer, etc.  And often I am more interested in what the review actually says than whether it's positive or negative per se.  When Roger Ebert was in his prime, I could usually tell from reading his reviews whether I would like a film or not, and not necessarily from the grade he gave it.  But he would always give enough interesting points pro or con that I could decide whether those points were things that were important to me or not.  Nowadays, I find his reviews less helpful than I used to, though I still read them.  And there are others that I do find useful.  All this said, I'd rather see a film I want to do well with fresh reviews rather than rotten ones!

As I mentioned in the DS film thread, Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, Steven Tyler, and Joe Perry performed last night at an afterparty for the DS premiere.  I'm excited that two youtubes have surfaced:  Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love and the Stones' Brown Sugar.  Supposedly School's Out was played as well- hope that one surfaces, along with anything else they may have played.  Johnny's way over on the left- looks like he changed outfits from his premiere attire.  Check them out if you're so inclined:

Because there are some people who spend too much time in front of the television instead of being outside with real people learning basic social skills and common courtesy.

I don't know why somebody found it necessary to yell that the late Mr. Frid is "the only Barnabas Collins."

Eh, knowing Johnny, he probably agrees.  What is probably more important to Johnny was that Frid himself was supportive.  I don't think it was ever Johnny's intent to replace Frid in any way.  But he had the opportunity to make this film and to salute him and the show in his and Burton's own way.  I and many others have said this before:  if you don't like the movie, it will never take anything away from you; you still have the show to enjoy.

[spoiler]I'm a little discouraged by the first few reviews.[/spoiler]As much as I'm a Depp fan, I don't automatically love everything he does, and I may not like this film.  After having gone through a period of optimism, I have lately been having the feeling that I will be disappointed.  Ah well, if that comes to pass, at least I can say I enjoyed the anticipation and the conversation with you folks.  I enjoyed seeing the complete series being released on DVD, and am thrilled to have the postcard that Frid signed.  I will look forward to the release of HODS and NODS.  If these things have been facilitated in any way by the DS film, it's no loss.  Plus, I as a Depp fan can enjoy the stills, the behind the scenes, the premiere photos, and many of the other goodies, even if I am disappointed in the film itself.  It's all good!

I have joined several DS Facebook groups, but confess that I haven't spent a lot of time on them.  Taeylor's is by far the nicest and I apologize for not participating more there.  But I spot checked a few of these sites this morning, and I was horrified by some of the behavior I saw there.[spoiler]People are absolutely gleeful that Variety didn't give a rave review,[/spoiler]or that the forecast isn't for Avengers numbers.  So many are saying "I told you so", and "they deserve failure for what they did to us true fans".  Holy expletive.  For a group that in the 60's and 70's begged for acceptance for their eccentric tastes, some of these folks are now acting like the cool kids who are getting together to heckle and bully.  One poor fellow on the main DS FB group kept trying to defend the film, even admitting he hasn't seen it and isn't sure if he'll like it, and he was accused of being a plant, and the old standby: "How old are you?"  I'd say the same about those who ask that question.  On the other hand, the site that is gung ho about the film seems almost as bad.  I thought I'd identify with them more because on the surface they're favoring open-mindedness, but I see a lot of heckling and goading of those who haven't cared for the snippets they've seen so far or who have trepidations.

Anyway, sorry to vent about this.  All to say, I appreciate the community and environment that we have here on the DS forums.  I haven't always agreed with everyone's opinions, or even their attitudes, in either direction, but I have always appreciated the civility and tolerance here.  Kudos to MB and Midnite for helping to keep this such a wonderful place!

Johnny Depp performed with Alice Cooper, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry last night at the DS premiere afterparty.  There are some grainy twitter pix floating about  [ghost_smiley]  Anyway, I was looking to see if by some chance there might be any YouTubes uploaded, and while I didn't see any, I found a YouTube of the cast arrivals.  Most of this is Johnny signing autographs, but there are glimpses of Eva Green, Tim Burton, Bella Heathcote, Alice Cooper and Steven Tyler, and at the very end, the lovely KLS.

Personally, I've never really cared about how much DS will make at the box office, other than that I hope it's not a flop and that they are able to make back more than the budget.  The Avengers isn't even in the same universe, because it's a mega-concentration of all the comic book heroes, most of which have individually been among the biggest box office successes ever.  We can't expect the box office to be anywhere near the same, and like I said, I'm not even hoping for that, just for a respectable success.  Many if not most of the movies I like the best aren't among the hugest box office successes.  And unfortunately, horror as a genre tends to be a tough one as far as box office success- I always wonder why more folks don't go out and see the better ones.  Anyway, we'll see what happens.

Anyway, there has just been a press conference somewhere in Hollywood- you can read some tweets about it from CineMovie's twitter.  Unfortunately, there are no photos or videos (yet- hopefully some sanctioned ones will surface).

The Dark Shadows Soundtrack (not to be confused with the score by Danny Elfman; the soundtrack has the Alice Cooper, T. Rex, Iggy Pop et al. songs) is FINALLY listed on Amazon as something other than a $43 import.  However, there only seems to be an mp3 download option.  Perhaps there won't be a CD version released in the US (or maybe one will come later).  At any rate, I'm glad it's at least going to be available, albeit as mp3 only.  It'll be released on the originally announced date, this Tuesday, May 8, which is the same date that the score is released.

My mom and I are not sure if we're going to love the movie or not, but we are being open minded about it. I don't expect it to be like the original series, but inspired from it. Maybe even a parallel time version of sorts. We'll see...love you all!  :-*

This is exactly how I'm going in to this, too.  I've actually become more optimistic as I've gone along. I'm staying away from overexposure (too many clips, spots, etc.) at this point so I really don't know what some of you folks are talking about regarding spoilers and such, but I just don't think that I have a very rigid a view of the DS canon or dogma or whatever, so my main thing is just whether it's a good story and whether I find it enjoyable and entertaining to watch.  We'll see!

By the way, they are supposedly doing press junkets in LA today and tomorrow, so look for even more interview clips and photos of the cast making their way out to the entertainment media.

has it been mentioned already that it looks like thomas mcadonell has been removed from the IMDb cast listing?

there is a listing for a 'justin tracy' as "six year old barnabas".

what up?

Yeah, there's a brief discussion about it on page 277 from a day or two ago.  I don't think we really know why he was cut (both MB and I seem to remember hearing confirmation from McDonell that he did film his scenes), but it was probably decided that he wasn't needed :(

Sorry I didn't know about this when I posted the EW cover article, but EW also has a piece on Alice Cooper and many of his film/TV cameos over the years.  Heads-up, Alice uses the "h" word ("humor", as in "humor in horror"  [ghost_wink]

Alice Cooper talks about his 'Dark Shadows' cameo -- and his many other memorable onscreen adventures

He is really a sweet-natured guy!

One more tidbit- Barnabas/Johnny will be on the cover of the next issue of Entertainment Weekly  [ghost_smiley]

I was just updating my "timeline" for Johnny Depp that we have running on the forum I participate on.  There is so much coming up, starting in just a couple of days, that I thought I'd list them all here, and see if anyone knows of anything else to add. The timeline is just for Depp, but I've been keeping note of a few other TV appearances by other cast members, which I've put underneath (not including ones that have already taken place- I've already missed Jonny Lee Miller and Eva Green on Kimmel  [ghost_sad] )  Here goes:

No, that's Depp.  [ghost_smiley]

Wow...

Yeah, he can pass for frighteningly young, darn him!  [ghost_wink]  And as said, I think makeup and even CGI helps.  I think the techniques can be pretty good these days.  Somehow, I think the lack of pointy bangs also young-ens him a bit, too, though I'm not sure why.  Still, we Depp fans recognize him just fine, and I don't think that even there that he looks *quite* as young as McDonell would have, but maybe they just decided the continuity would be better with Johnny.
